JAZZ FESTIVAL2018 40th ANNIVERSARYIn may 2018, the yearly Amersfoort Jazz Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary. It is one of the longest existing jazz festivals in the Netherlands, firmly anchored in the cultural landscape of the Netherlands.

FESTIVAL HISTORYOver the last decade Amersfoort Jazz Festival has made a sustainable development: from one of the larger jazz events in the Netherlands, to a current, adventurous and dynamic international festival for World Jazz music. With its growth, the most interesting fixed values, experience and expertise from the past are included as a benchmark for the future.

Since its merger with Global Village Festival in 2012, the Amersfoort Jazz Festival program has been further deepened and complemented, in line with the latest developments in the field of jazz and related world music. Yearly, Amersfoort Jazz presents exceptional and noteworthy musicians from home and abroad, performing in a wide variety of styles, often in surprising and unique combinations.

The organization aims to create a dynamic spot for musical dialogue, between the artists on stage as well as with the audience.

FESTIVAL SET UPThe festival starts on thursday evening at the theatre, with a special opening concert, featuring the Artist in Residence. On friday (evening), saturday (afternoon and evening) and sunday (afternoon), the regular concerts take place at the various in- and outdoor venues throughout the inner city of Amersfoort. 3 main stages (market squares), 2 theatres, and 7 smaller venues. These include performances by the international artists from the Focus Country, as well as (international) jazz laureates. Almost all concerts are free of charge. On saturday afternoon the festival invites the audience to experience the historic inner city of Amersfoort with so-called Jazz Heritage Walks, including intimate chamber jazz concerts. Besides the regular program, various jamsessions and clubgigs take place at several locations ‘roundtown’.

‘WORLD JAZZ’Jazz & world music is being created and consumed all over the world, often in a dynamic fusion, mixing a rich and dynamic variety of flavours, influences, sounds and techniques, causing “genre transcending” developments. We consider improvisation as the core element of jazz and world music. To profile the programme of our festival, we define all improvised music, and its subgenres and cross-overs as World Jazz.

JAZZ HERITAGE LOCATIONSThe Observant is a fully restored monastery, originally dating from de 15th century. Its name derives from the monastic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (also known as ‘Trappists’), that settled in Amersfoort. Over the last years the Observant has evolved into a full fledged modern cultural info centre, a place for meetings and events, with conference rooms, a grand café and a courtyard. De Observant is ‘the heart’ of all events during Amersfoort Jazz Festival, including the World Jazz Conference and Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival; it is the official hub for all musicians, professionals and audience of Amersfoort Jazz Festival.

Not far from the Observant there are several other historical locations, contributing to the jazz event as stages for intimate world jazz concerts. Among those locations are the restored St. Aegtenkapel, the Mannenzaal, the Lutherse Kerk, the Mariënhof and the Mondriaanhuis, which nowadays is a museum dedicated to the famous painter. These venues are suitable for intimate and semi-acoustic chamber jazz concerts, solo performances and small lineups, also musical meditations.

JAZZ HERITAGE WALKSOn saturday afternoon the festival invites the audience to experience the historic inner city of Amersfoort, with its churches, chapels and monasteries. Each Jazz Heritage Walks is guided and includes an intimate concert at one of cultural places. This item occured for the first time at Amersfoort Jazz Festival 2017. Artists performing: Paul van Kemade’s Three Horns And A Bass, Tango Extremo (with Ben van den Dungen), Artvark Saxophone Quartet (feat. Rolf Delfos and Bart Wirtz), Graziëlla Hunzel Rivero, Adedeji Adetayo (Nigeria) and Stormvogel & Leo Janssen (Songs from the Great Indo-European Songbook).

CULTURAL CITY Amersfoort is the second largest city of the province of Utrecht in central Netherlands. Amersfoort is named after the river Amer, which today is called Eem. City rights were granted by the bishop of Utrecht in 1259 AD. The city has a strong relation to clerical civilization and is known for its well preserved medieval centre with canals, bridges and towngates. The Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren (1444 AD) is one of the highest towers in the Netherlands. Some of the most illustrious people in Dutch history lived in Amersfoort, like politician Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and painter Piet Mondriaan. Amersfoort is recognized as a Dutch Creative City, fostering creativity among its citizens and providing events and festivals. ZOOVER notes Amersfoort in its TOP 10 Dutch Best City Trips.

INTERNATIONAL JAZZLAUREATE FESTIVAL

In 2017, Amersfoort hosted the first edition of the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival. The purpose of this laureate festival is to foster international careers by creating an environment for finalists from jazz and world music competitions worldwide. The festival enables international laureates to network with festival directors from around the globe. Besides performing at Amersfoort Jazz Festival, the laureates establish global connections and start meaningful collaborations through the exchange of talents.

The International Jazz Laureate Festival is an initiative by Dutch music organizations JazzNL, Sena Perfomers and Ntb, and relies on the commitment of international jazz & world festivals and competitions. André Le Roux, managing director of South African Music Rights Organization (SAMRO) sees this initiative as the beginning of a long-lasting collaboration: “This festival creates an opportunity for our scholarship winners to make an international breakthrough and participate in important master classes”.

•Each year, Amerfoort Jazz selects a specific foreign country to be featured at the Amersfoort Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. Eligible countries have the capacity to fulfil professional criteria, proving to be valid and effective within a substantial jazz and world music network, consisting of artists, managers, festivals, educational institutes, media and a music minded audience.

•From the selected Focus Country ca. 15 musicians are invited to the Amersfoort Jazz Festival in the Netherlands. These musicians are selected by Amersfoort Jazz in collaboration with its partners in the Focus Country. In particular, recent finalists of jazz and world music competitions in the Focus Country are considered to participate and perform at the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival, which is also part of Amersfoort Jazz Festival. The jazz laureates are recommended by the partners in the Focus Country.

•The selected musicians perform during the festival on both indoor and outdoor stages, under circumstances that provide the right ambiance for the concert. Each musician will play a maximum of three concerts in total, including the Focus Night on saturday evening and a grand finale at the outdoor mainstage on sunday afternoon. The Focus Night in Theater de Lieve Vrouw, is an evening with multiple time slots, opened by the ambassador of the Focus Country in the Netherlands.

•Along with the musicians, a delegation of professionals from the Focus Country is invited to participate in the World Jazz Conference and enjoy the hospitality program of Amersfoort Jazz Festival, which includes hotel and catering, free entrance to all concerts and participating in an English guided Jazz Heritage Walk.

WORLD JAZZ CONFERENCESince 2012, Amersfoort Jazz Festival emphasizes its international ambitions, by hosting international conferences and inviting festival directors and artists from foreign countries. In 2017, over 30 organizations attended the World Jazz Conference at Amersfoort Jazz Festival and in 2018 this will be 40. The aim is to build an eco-system of strong players from all over the globe, who share visions and enhance collaboration between each other on an international level. Important tools are keynote speeches, discussion groups, multi-lateral meetings, network meetings and -of course- concerts.

HOME OF JAZZDuring their stay, the delegates visit concerts, talk to fellow festival directors as well as to musicians. This is why we created a Home of Jazz during the whole weekend. A place where one can meet and greet, talk, eat, drink and experience world jazz music. The Observant serves as the main festival hub, where after- party’s and jam sessions take place. A safe haven for the lost & found.
