SENATOR P. MICHAEL PITFIELDANNOUNCESHISRETIREMENTAFTERDISTINGUISHEDCAREEROFPUBLICSERVICE

OTTAWA June 1, 2010 - Senator P. Michael Pitfield (Independent) today released the followingstatement:

Today I have announced my intention to resign from the Senate, effective midnight, June 1st,2010 .

I believe that service to our nation is the highest privilege that a Canadian can undertake, and forfifty years I have striven to serve Canada as a senior public servant and Senator. In my roles asSecretary to the Cabinet, Clerk of the Privy Council, and as an Independent Senator, I havesought to engage Canadians with public policy, and have worked to improve Canadiansunderstanding of and access to, our federal government.

The Senate in our modern government is both ingeniously complex and uniquely Canadian. Itplays vital roles in legislative review and regional representation, and many excellent women andmen have worked hard to ensure its functionality and success as a second chamber. While agovernmental system is never perfect, we must build upon the genius of the system to ensure itscontinued relevance in federal government and to the lives of Canadians.

I have said, in referring to constitution-making, that the first step is almost never the final step,and that focusing merely on the change and not on its consequences is to invite chaos. This is astrue in life as it is for the Senate.

Throughout my career I have had the privilege of representing Canada in many different

capacities In particular, over the past several decades, it has been a privilege to serve with mySenate colleagues.

Unfortunately, my declining health has increasingly diminished my ability to make thecontribution I wish to make as a Senator to Canadas public affairs. For this reason, I will resignmy position midnight, effective June 1, 2010, and allow another to undertake the vital duty ofpublic service.

Senator Pitfield joined the Public Service in 1959 and rose to occupy its highest office as Secretary tothe Cabinet and Clerk of the Privy Council. He was appointed to the Senate in 1982 by PrimeMinister Pierre Trudeau and has served since that time as a Senator without affiliation to any politicalparty.

Servir son pays est, je crois, le plus grand privilge qui puisse tre donn un Canadien. Pendant50 ans, jai servi le Canada en tant que haut fonctionnaire et snateur. titre de secrtaire duCabinet, de greffier du Conseil priv et de snateur indpendant, jai cherch faire participer lesCanadiens aux politiques publiques, ainsi qu les amener mieux comprendre le gouvernementfdral et y avoir davantage accs.

Au sein de lappareil gouvernemental, le Snat est une institution la fois trs complexe etspcifiquement canadienne. Il joue un rle vital en matire dexamen des lois et de reprsentationdes rgions, et nombreux sont ceux, hommes et femmes, qui ont travaill fort pour en assurer lebon fonctionnement et lefficacit, en tant que deuxime chambre. Mme si un systme degouvernement nest jamais parfait, nous devons miser sur le gnie de ce systme pour quil soittoujours pertinent, tant pour la fonction publique fdrale que pour les Canadiens, au quotidien.

Comme je lai dj dclar, en matire constitutionnelle, le premier pas nest presque jamais ledernier et, si lon se concentre uniquement sur le changement comme tel et non sur sesconsquences, on risque le chaos. Et cela vaut tant dans la vie quau Snat.

Tout au long de ma carrire, jai eu lhonneur de reprsenter le Canada divers titres. Au coursdes dernires dcennies, en particulier, jai eu limmense privilge de servir le pays avec mescollgues du Snat.

Malheureusement, en raison de ma sant dfaillante, je ne suis plus en mesure de contribuerautant que je le souhaiterais, titre de snateur, aux affaires publiques du pays. Cest pourquoi jequitterai mon poste minuit le 1 juin 2010, laissant un autre le soin de sacquitter de cetimportant devoir civique.

Le snateur Pitfield est entr dans la fonction publique en 1959. Au sommet de sa carrire, il aoccup le poste de secrtaire du Cabinet et greffier du Conseil priv. Il a t nomm au Snat en1982 par le Premier ministre Pierre Trudeau et a, depuis, occup le poste de snateur sans tre affili aucun parti politique.
