b. Describe how the Native Americans used their

environment to obtain food, clothing, and shelter.

Their environment is in Florida. They started out in northern Florida, but when the Americans attacked them, the Seminole tribe retreated further south, into the Everglades.

The Seminoles were not originally a single tribe. They were an alliance of Northern Florida and Southern Georgia natives that banded together in the 1700's to fight the European invaders, including people from the Creek, Miccosukee, Hitchiti Oconee tribes and runaway slaves form South Carolina and Georgia .

FOOD• The Seminoles were

farming people• women harvested crops

of corn, beans, and squash.

• Men fish and hunt game such as deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, turtles, and alligators.

• Seminole Indian dishes included cornbread, soups, and stews.

CULTURE• The leader of the

Seminoles, Chief Osceola,

• refused to give up his land to the United States Army

• He fought back, • tricked into coming out of

hiding to discuss peace. Soldiers put him in jail at Ft. Moultrie, SC

• he died several months later. Other Seminoles carried on his fight.
