Summer Reading! Did you know you are required to read over the summer and complete an assignment for your next English class? Check out the school website for details on the book and activity. Happy reading, ‘Noles!

We also are at an all-time high of students enrolled in advanced coursework. This includes Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and International Baccalaureate classes. If your student has not yet sought out an advanced opportunity, please have them speak with a counselor. These classes have proven invaluable in preparing students for success at the college/university level. I urge you to partner with us! Research has documented over and over again that children of involved parents perform better in school. We certainly need your support. Please consider becoming an active member of the PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association), Seminole High School’s Booster Club, School Advisory Council, or a Dividend in one of the many organizations here at Seminole. We can work with your schedule and would appreciate whatever time you can commit. And our students will appreciate your efforts as well! In closing, I invite you to carefully consider summer school opportunities for your student, including face to face coursework or Seminole Virtual School. Your student’s counselor can assist with providing you the necessary information regarding enrollment and suggested coursework. Please let me know how I can serve you better. I encourage your input and suggestions. After all, we have a mutual commitment to our young people. We are a much better team when we are communicating and working together. I extend to you my best wishes for a wonderful remainder of the school year, and a relaxed and enjoyable summer break!

Regards,Connie E. Collins, Ed. D., Principal

Mass Media Once again, the Mass Media Department is celebrating the success of hundreds of students who have earned Industry Certification credentials from Adobe and Microsoft! Business professionals pay hundreds, perhaps thousands of dollars for the training and certifications that these students have earned at no cost to them! We encourage students and parents to explore the many programs available in the Mass Media CAPE Academy in Information Technology, Digital Design,Web Design,Computer Science, TV Production, Newspaper and Yearbook. Visit our web site at www.shsMassMedia.com for more details, links and resources! We would also like to congratulate our inaugural Business Professionals of America (BPA) team who successfully competed at the Regional and State level, and will be representing Seminole High School in Boston at the National level with Mrs. Renee Dubber, sponsor. Thanks to the generous support of our business sponsors who helped make this dream a reality for our students! We are always looking for internship opportunities for our students, and new members for our Business Advisory Committee. If you would like your business to partner with our program, please contact us at your convenience by sending an email to [email protected].

2016-17 Parking at Seminole High SchoolIt’s time to plan for parking at Seminole High School for the 2016-2017 school year. Here is what you need to know:• Parking on Seminole High School campus is a privilege. In order to retain this privilege,

students must agree to abide by all parking rules and regulations listed on the parking application and as outlined in the SCPS Student Code of Conduct Handbook.

• Parking options at Seminole High are changing! Due to the limited number of parking spaces on main campus, we will offer two parking options for 2016-2017. Students may purchase a $70 parking decal which allows parking in student designated parking spaces on the main campus. A lower-cost alternative is to purchase a$20 decal for the Reservation Lot, which is located beside Millennium Middle School at the corner of Live Oak Blvd and Lakeview Drive. The Reservation Parking Lot has a unique parking decal. Students purchasing this new parking pass may park ONLY in the Reservation Lot. The Reservation Lot is not patrolled by security staff during the school day, thus this lot remains locked between 7:30 am and 2:00 pm. The Reservation Lot is not recommended for Dual Enrollment or OJT students!

• Parking Permits are available to Juniors and Seniors only. Seniors may purchase permits Monday, July 25 through Thursday, July 28 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Juniors and Seniors may purchase parking permits Monday, August 1 through Thursday, August 4 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. Parking Permit Applications are available in the front office of the Administration building, or on the school website.

APPLICATION PROCESS1. Obtain Parking Permit Application from the school website or SHS Bookkeeping Office.

Note that there are two applications: one for the $20 Reservation Lot decal, and another for the $70 main campus parking decal. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure the correct application is submitted.

2. Complete Application (both pages) and bring the following items to the Bookkeeping Office:a. Notarized application (Notaries are available at SHS on a limited basis. Parent

MUST be present for notarization.)b. Student’s Valid Driver’s Licensec. Proof of Insurance (printed only; electronic copies will not be accepted)d. ORIGINAL Current Vehicle Registration e. $70 CASH, CHECK OR MONEY ORDER (Made Payable to Seminole High

School) for Junior or Senior Parking Decals; or $20 CASH, CHECK OR MONEY ORDER for Reservation Lot Decals.

3. Only completed applications with all required documentation will be accepted.4. Students must be free of debt with Seminole High School in order to purchase a parking

permit. Check with the SHS Bookkeeping Office to ensure your student is debt-free.

P r o b l e m 2 Te a m A ( W O R L D F I N A L S BOUND!) and Team B for placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the state! Team A members travelling to Worlds: Sara Husselman, Erica Husselman, Morgan Wegner, Sara Zeigler, Sara Parsons, Melissa Hyder. Yearbook The 2016 Salmagundi Yearbook is expected to arrive in late April/early May, and we just can’t wait to see it! We submitted some of the pages for the Florida Scholastic Press Association’s 2016 Spring Digital Contest and won All-Florida, Best of the Best, Excellent, and Honorable Mention awards. We could not be happier! Pre-sold books will be distributed first, and any remaining books will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis for $85 (cash only) in the Bookkeepping Office. A limited amount of books were ordered, so we cannot guarantee a book to everyone who did not order a book in advance during pre-sale dates. We will announce the distribution sale dates once the book delivery date is confirmed, so stayed tuned to our Facebook page (Seminole Salmagundi), Twitter (@ NolesSalmagundi), NDN News, and SeminoleYearbook.com for the latest information. Rising Seniors (current Juniors) will soon be receiving information for Senior portraits. All yearbook portraits must be taken by Leonard’s Studios in Casselberry. Portrait packages are available for purchase through Leonard’s. Although we recommend Leonard’s Studios for these packages, you may choose to have packages made through other photographers. Please plan to have your child’s senior yearbook portrait taken during the summer. Seniors whose photos are taken after September 2 will not have the opportunity to select their yearbook pose due to time constraints. If your senior is unable to get his or her portraits taken at the studio, a Leonard’s photographer will be on campus for yearbook pictures in September as a last-chance opportunity to be included in the yearbook. We’ll announce the exact date once we can confirm it. We hope you will understand that both, Leonard’s Photography and the yearbook staff have deadlines to meet; therefore, seniors must take their picture by September 17 to be included in the yearbook. Additional information is available by calling the studio at 1-800-215-4852 or visiting the web site at www.leonards.com. There is a $10 sitting fee for portraits taken either at the studio or on campus. Please feel free to contact me via email at veronica_ [email protected] with any questions or concerns. Visit our website for more information www.SeminoleYearbook.com, like our Facebook page (Seminole Salmagundi Yearbook) and follow us on Twitter @NolesSalmagundi for updates. Information on Senior Tributes Ads and Business Ads is available for download on our website!

Congratulations!

Illuminati The SHS Illuminati Academic Team has won the District Championship for the 14th time! Stand-outs for the team include Julius Chai and Andy Cai, who were named to the Seminole County All-Star Team, and Wenjie Gong, who was named alternate. SHS’s Jane Cooper is coaching the Seminole County All-Stars in preparation for the Commissioner’s Academic Challenge state tournament in April. In addition, the Illuminati fielded two teams, Seminole Black and Seminole Orange, to compete against teams from all the other county high schools in the annual Battle of the Brains tournament hosted by Seminole State. Seminole Black (Julius Chai, Naveen Krishnan, Yaser Ahmad, Ryan Lam, Dexter Bell, and Varun Naga) won the tournament. Naveen Krishnan was the overall top-scoring student for the whole tournament. Andy Cai, Julius Chai, and Wenjie Gong were also named to the top ten. Our other team, Seminole Orange, finished strong at third place.
