2014-2015
1. Organized a talk on Mystery of Quantum Mechanics by Sebastian Koothotil, a senior
research fellow, Uty. Of Calicut. Quantum Mechanics is an important branch of physics.
Speaker could convey the basic concept of the subject in a very justifiable manner. Both
PG and UG students appreciated the talk.
2. Workshop on expEYES
Department organized one day workshop on expEYES for college teachers and
students on 22/8/14 in collaboration with Academy of Physics Teachers. Dr. Ajith Kumar B
P, Scientist, Inter University Accelerator Centre of India, New Delhi was the resource person.
The workshop was beneficial for both teachers as well as for students. ExpEYES is a hard
ware and software frame work for developing science experiments, demonstrations and
projects without getting in to the details of electronics and computer programming. It
converts our PC into a science laboratory. Design of ExpEYES combines the real-time
measurement capability of micro-controllers with the ease and flexibility of Python
programming language for data analysis and visualisation. It’s a tool for learning science by
exploring and experimenting.
3. One day workshop on “BASIC EXPERIMENTS IN PHYSICS” was organised on
26/11/2014 in association with Academy of Physics Teachers sponsored by KSCSTE for
Higher secondary school students and teachers. The session was handled by Prof. T R
Ananthakrishnan (Visiting Faculty, International School of Photonics, CUSAT). The
basic experiments in physics were demonstrated and were very interesting for high school
students. The programme was organized to commemorate the centenary year celebration
of Bohr Atom Model. The objective of the workshop was to demonstrate the basic
principles of Physics through a stage show among High School/Higher Secondary
/College students. About 200 students and 10 teachers from various schools attended the
programme. The main highlight of the programme was ‘Physics Stage Show’ by
Prof.T.R.Ananthakrishnan. Ms.Nandini S.G. of I M.Sc. Physics gave a presentation on
the topic ‘Bohr Atom Model’. A session on ‘Fundamentals of Electronics’ was handled
by Dr.Lakshmi M., Assistant Professor, Dept. of Physics Mercy College, Palakkad
2015-2016
4. Organised a talk by Dr. Mukundan Thelakkat, Professor , University of Bayreuth,
Germany on ‘Organic Semiconductors and devices-Electricity from plastics’ In the
field of organic devices he has profound knowledge and experience on OLEDs, solar
cells, and holography. The talk was a valuable session for UG and PG students as well as
for the faculty of our department. He presented the novel concept of electricity from
plastics in an appreciable manner. The session turned out to be very interactive one which
reflected the expertise of the speaker to a great extend.
2016-2017
5. Department organized a talk on “Energy Management” by Prof B. M. Musthafa,
Coordinator, IRTC, Mundur, Palakkad on 4/08/2016. Integrated Rural Technology Centre
(IRTC,Palakkad) is a research, development and training centre set up by Kerala Sasthra
Sahithya Parishad (KSSP) which is the premier people’s science movement in the
country. The talk mainly focused on energy conservation and non-conventional energy
sources. The talk was very effective and interactive one. Students got familiarized with
development of energy efficient devices and various studies related with energy
conservation.
6. Organised a talk on “Fundamentals of Nuclear Physics” by Prof V.Vijaya Kumar,
Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Govt Victoria College, Palakkad on
5/10/2016. Talk was very informative and useful for students.
2017-2018
7. The department organised a talk by Dr. Bindu Krishnan, Professor & Researcher in
University of Autonoma de Nuevo Leon, NuevoLeon, Mexico on the topic Recent
developments in thin film solar cells on 24/7/2017. The talk mainly pointed out the
importance of developing solar cells for harnessing energy. Both UG and PG students
attended the seminar.
8. Organised one day workshop on LED Lamp Making in association with Energy
Management centre, Palakkad on 31/10/2017.
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source that emits light
when current flows through it. LEDs have many advantages over incandescent light
sources, including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, smaller size, and faster
switching. Around 55 students were trained to make LED bulbs using the kits brought by
the organisers. They were also trained to repair the damaged LED lamps.
2018-2019
9. A talk was organized on Energetic ion beams for material characterization and
modification by Dr. Lisha Raghavan, D.S.Kothari Post Doctoral Fellow, Acceleration
Centre, Delhi on 22/6/2018. Dr Lisha is an alumnus of our department. The talk focused
on importance of material characterization using electron ion beams. Around 150 students
benefitted from the session.
10. A talk was organized on Introduction to online courses by Mr. Win Wilson, Head of the
Mathematics and Humanities Department, Ammini College of Engineering on
25/06/2018. Now a days, online courses and MOOC courses play a very important role in
academic as well as career advancement as per the revised norms of UGC. Around 40
students were present for the talk. Mr. Win Wilson succeeded in aptly explaining about
online courses and creating awareness among the students about the boon of online
courses
11. A talk was organized as a Tribute to ECG Sudarsan and Stephen Hawking by Prof.
VijayaKumar, Department of Physics, Govt: Victoria college Palakkad on 7/09/2018.
Ennackal Chandy George Sudarshan who is also known as E. C. G. Sudarshan was an
Indian theoretical physicist and a professor at the University of Texas. Prof: Sudarshan
has been credited with numerous contributions to the field of theoretical Physics.
Hawking was the first to set out a theory of cosmology explained by a union of
the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He was a vigorous supporter of
the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. The talk was a tribute to both the
eminent scientists. Around 100 students attended the talk.
12. WORLD SPACE WEEK 2018 was celebrated by hosting Space Exhibition & Lectures in
association with VSSC Trivandrum from 8/10/2018 to 11/10/2018.
The exhibition was open to school students and to the public. Students from various
schools visited the exhibition and got familiarized with launch vehicles like GSLV,
PSLV, reusable launch vehicles etc. and engines like VIKAS engine, solid propellant
engine, missions like Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, Aditya, Gaganyaan etc. The exhibition
turned out to be visual treat for not only to students but also for the common public.
Many students of various departments from our college joined hands together as narrators
and volunteers which steered the programme to be a grant success. Around 50,000 people
visited the exhibition.
