    It is a combination of qualities in an

    organization and its employees that arise

    from what is generally regarded asappropriate ways to think and act.

    Organization Culture

    It is a set of key values , assumptions,

    understandings and norms that is shared by

    members of an organization.

    Need for Culture

    Culture is the vehicle through whichindividuals coordinate their activities toachieve common goals and expectations.

    Culture helps individuals understand howtheir roles fit within the larger picture.

    Culture defines the norms of acceptableconduct.

    Culture develops consistent interpretationsof behaviors throughout the organization.

    Researcher Jeffrey Sonnenfeld identified

    the following four types of cultures:

    Academy Cultureo Employees are highly skilled and tend to stay in the

    organization, while working their way up the ranks.

    o The organization provides a stable environment in whichemployees can development and exercise their skills.

    o Examples are universities, hospitals, large corporations,etc.

    Baseball Team Culture

    o Employees are "free agents" who have highly prizedskills. They are in high demand and can rather easily get

    jobs elsewhere.

    o This type of culture exists in fast-paced, high-risk

    organizations, such as investment banking, advertising,etc.

    Club Culture

    o The most important requirement for employees in thisculture is to fit into the group. Usually employees startat the bottom and stay with the organization.

    o The organization promotes from within and highly values

    seniority.

    o Examples are the military, some law firms, etc.

    Fortress Culture

    o Employees don't know if they'll be laid off or not. Theseorganizations often undergo massive reorganization.

    o There are many opportunities for those with timely,specialized skills.

    o Examples are savings and loans, large car companies, etc.
