“Maternal preconception weight trajectories, pregnancy complications, and growth and development of offspring”
Dr Akilew Adane is a Research Officer in the Telethon kids Institute who has been recently awarded a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Queensland. Dr Adane’s presentation will focus on his PhD project which examined the impact of maternal preconception weight trajectories and pregnancy complications on the growth and development of offspring using data from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health and other national datasets.

Clara is a final year PhD student with the Australian Respiratory Early Surveillance Team for Cystic Fibrosis (AREST CF) at the Telethon Kids Institute and University of Western Australia. In 2014, Clara completed her BSc Hons in Biomedical Science with the National Centre for Asbestos Related Diseases at UWA. In 2015, she commenced her PhD which aims to characterise the trapped air appearance on CT scans in young children with cystic fibrosis.

“Stats/ DAG Club:
Matt is the Manager of Biometrics. Matt’s own research has focused on complications arising from Type 1 Diabetes. He recently (2017) completed his PhD at the University of Western Australia, titled “A contemporary assessment of risk factors for the complications of childhood-onset Type 1 diabetes”. Dr Cooper is actively involved in numerous Scientific Review Committees and is engaged in Western Australia’s extensive Data Linkage system. A key area of research focus for Dr Cooper is utilising longitudinal data to provide individualised risk predictions for complication development. Matt will share a talk he recently gave to a first year statistics group at UWA on his experiences getting a paper published.
In Part 2, Daniel Christensen will provide a brief overview of 2 papers:

Professor Stephen Wood Head, Clinical & Translational NeuroscienceDeputy Director, Research & Translation
“Predicting outcome in youth mental health”Mental health problems typically arise during adolescence and young adulthood and put those who experience them at greatly increased risk for poor functional outcomes. In the early phase of illness most presenting problems are non-specific, and predicting likely outcomes at the individual level has not been possible. In this talk I will discuss the international efforts to predict the onset and early course of mental illnesses, beginning with the work on the at-risk mental state for psychosis and extending to current machine learning approaches.
Professor Stephen Wood is Associate Director, Research and also leads Clinical Translational Neuroscience Research Program at Orygen. He holds honorary positions at the School of Psychological Sciences, University of Melbourne and the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham (UK). Stephen’s research is focused on identifying neurobiological markers of mental illness, from predictors of poor outcome to markers of treatment response. He is also interested at understanding the way in which normal brain development can affect and be affected by the development of mental illnesses. Stephen has held leadership positions at both IEPA Early Intervention in Mental Health and the Society for Mental Health Research, and is a past recipient of the Australasian Society for Psychiatric Research’s Schering-Plough Organon Prize.

Dr. Jason Waithman is a molecular and cellular immunologist having obtained his PhD in 2008. His training was completed in outstanding institutions that include the University of Melbourne, Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, and Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research under the guidance of multiple international leading
immunologists. He relocated to Perth in 2012 to establish and run an independent, original research program at the Telethon Kids Institute. He has successfully attracted fellowship support from 2010-21 and has attracted project funding from multiple sources to support his research program. His research program focusses on basic discovery and the development of innovative therapeutic strategies for cancer patients.

Getting the most out of Research Supervision
Professor Jonathan Carapetis is Director of the Telethon Kids Institute and a Professor at UWA. His research interests include rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, other group A streptococcal diseases, vaccine preventable disease, Indigenous child health, youth health and education, and skin sores and scabies. He has supervised 23 PhD, Masters, Honours, Clinical Trainees and others in research.

Dr. Croarkin is Director of the Mayo Clinic Depression Center and
holds the academic rank of Associate Professor of Psychiatry,
Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Croarkin
completed medical school at the University of North Texas Health
Science Center. He completed an internship and residency in
psychiatry at Naval Medical Center San Diego where he served
as chief resident. Dr. Croarkin served as a US Navy psychiatrist in
an academic role at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and in an operational setting as
a psychiatrist embedded with the 24 Marine Expeditionary Unit in North Babil
during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He returned for clinical and research training in child
and adolescent psychiatry at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, again serving
as chief resident. He earned a Master of Science degree with distinction in clinical
science at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Southwestern Medical
Center. Thereafter, he was recruited to Mayo Clinic for a research focused position.
An expert in child and adolescent mood disorders, early life adversity,
and psychopharmacology, Dr. Croarkin conducts research to help find innovative
diagnostic and treatment approaches for children and adolescents. His research has
been funded by the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression,
National Institutes of Health, and Industry partnerships. His findings have been
published in numerous peer-reviewed journals such American Journal of Psychiatry,
JAMA Psychiatry, and Neuropsychopharmacology. Dr. Croarkin has mentored many
students and residents. He holds full faculty privileges in Clinical and Translational
Science, Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Croarkin has
received many awards and honors. In 2017, he received a National Institute of Mental
Health Biobehavioral Research Award for Innovative New Scientists (NIMH BRAINS).
He is also a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
