Industrial Visit at 25MWp Backbone Solar Power Plant
Participants of Suryamitra Skill Development Program running at Department of Electrical
Engineering visited Backbone Solar Power Plant at Shivlakha, Kutch on 30 Oct., 2018. Total solar
power installed capacity at the plant was 25 MWp. During the visit students were able to
observe and learn complete process flow starting from design of plant, installation and working
of solar panels, their wiring and interconnections, role of inverter and its selection, operation
from control room, supply of generated power to grid, etc. The plant was equipped with SCADA
system for monitoring real time power generation data. During the visit students also interacted
with site supervisors and engineers for better understanding of operation and maintenance.
It is worth to know that Suryamitra skill development program is funded by Government of
India through Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and National Institute of Solar
Energy (NISE). DIET is among very few institutes that are approved training partners for this
course.

Internet of Things – An Introduction
Internet of Things (IoT) is currently one of most buzzing word in technology domain and it is
envisaged as a technology that will revolutionize the way we work, live, learn and play.
The term Internet of Things was coined by Kevin Ashton, a British technology
pioneer, who is cofounder of Auto-ID center at MIT, USA. He is well known as person behind
creating global standards for RFID systems. He used the term IoT to describe a system where the
internet will be connected to physical world through ubiquitous sensors.
To understand this better, one needs to understand difference between internet and IoT.
Conventionally internet is understood or seen as a global network of interconnected computers
or similar computing devices. In the same way IoT is also the network but of interconnected
physical objects (called Things). Objects here do not mean only computers but anything and
everything around us or that we are interested in. This may be electrical or mechanical
devices, home appliances, vehicles, buildings, animals or we ourselves i.e. people. This will
become possible through wide spread use of sensors and actuators along with some embedded
technology which will make these objects capable of transmitting and receiving information.
Thus Internet can be considered as network of homogeneous (of similar type) objects where as
IoT is the network of heterogeneous objects. IoT is going to the enabling technology that will

convert a dumb devices or applications into smart ones. IoT promises to deliver massive gains in
efficiency, business, growth and above all quality of life.
For example think of a
bridge or a railway track or any
such asset or machine that is
studded with appropriate sensors
which allows to continuously
monitor it and proactively identify
probable defects. This will enable
to initiate necessary maintenance
work or any such actions before
that asset fails or stops
functioning. This will help not
only to enhance asset’s life and
reduce maintenance costs but also
in many cases avoid serious
accidents. If we look around we
may find many such problems
where IoT can be the solution.
Broadly speaking, IoT at
system architecture level consist of
5 stages or sections. First section
contains Things i.e. any object or

system that is intended to be remotely observed or controlled. This objects will have appropriate
sensors and actuators along with some data communication technology e.g. Bluetooth, wi-fi, etc.
Second section may consist of a data aggregator and a gateway. This section will be responsible
to collect data from all Things and pass it next section. Third section of architecture represents
some global communication infrastructure like Internet responsible for communicating data
generally over a long range. Fourth section may consist of central data centers or cloud where
major data processing, data analysis and data management is carried out. Last section represent
the control section where any authorized person will be able to monitor and command the
system using some smart devices like smartphone, computer, etc.
As per one of the reports from Cisco Internet
Business Solutions Group, IoT was born
around 2008-2009 and its well under way
since then. It is predicted that by
2020, against world population of around 7.6
billion, there will be 50 billion connected
devices. This means there will be around 6 to
7 connected devices per person.
IoT solutions are complex due to the
scale and heterogeneousness of the devices
and connectivity involved, however, it

and connectivity involved, however, it
promises a great future for all of us and a
promising career for interested ones.
