    Introduction

    y Cities which continuously host different kind of events areevent cities.

    y As India is a sacred place, here number of different events areperformed in each city depending upon its socio cultural

    background and tradition.y India has diversified culture and religion which is a unique

    feature. . It has a strong tradition and historical background.Every year a variety of events take place in India.

    y Todays cities are increasingly using events to improve theirimage, economy, attract visitors and simulate urbandevelopment.

    y Events give identity to the city. Cities have long used megaevents such as World Fairs, Expos and sporting events as ameans of revitalizing their economies, creating infrastructureand improving their image.

    Types of events:

    Events can be classified in three main types, according tonature, duration and occurrence.

    Cultural : Film Festivals, Dance, music programs, etc.

    Religious : Kumbha Meals etc.Social : Political meetings, NGOs events etc.

    Sporting : Olympic games, CWG, tournaments etc.

    Long term : Games, Festivals like, Ganesha, Navaratri etc.

    Short term : Music concerts, Political meetings.

    Events like Ganesh festivals, Christmas, are periodical in natureconducted every year, while some events like music

    concerts, sports can be held any time of the year.

    Approach to study :

    y The main focus of study is on,

    - To study different types of events happening in city and itsrelation to city in terms of transformations in

    built form. How city changes according to events. What arethe benefits of events to city and people.

    - To identify cities in India which has potential to carry outdifferent events, depending upon citys

    character and tradition.

    Design Outcome :y Identifying such cities and enhancing different events in that

    city will give the city a new identity as well as economicgrowth and tourism brand.

    y Enhancing design interventions in the city, like builtstructures, open and semi open spaces, depending upon type
