Orvieto is an ideal study abroad location for Saint Anselm students. Italy is the birthplace of both Saint Anselm and Saint Benedict, and Orvieto is within easy driving distance of important Benedictine monasteries, including Monte Cassino and Subiaco, which were founded by Saint Benedict in the sixth century. In many ways, the foundation of the distinctive Catholic, liberal arts education that we provide is rooted there, in the history of the church, literature and the arts that pervades the entire country. Studying in Orvieto is an opportunity for our students, not only to take their Saint Anselm experiences global, but to engage with our Benedictine educational tradition at its heart. — DR. STEVEN R. Students take four courses (just as they would at our New Hampshire campus), but local cultural events, landmarks, and excursions are all part of the program in Italy. PROGRAM LOCATIONHistoric Orvieto is located in southwestern Umbria. Situated high on a cliff made of volcanic rock, the city provides a panoramic view of the surrounding valley. The narrow roads, the gothic cathedral, and the city squares will make you feel as if you have stepped back in time and help you to appreciate the long history of the region.

All classes are taught in the newly restored sixteenth-century Simoncelli Palace in the Piazza del Popolo (which hosts open-air market stands twice a week). This beautiful three-story building is located on the opposite side of the square from the imposing medieval Palazzo del Popolo. Along with fully equipped classrooms, a computer lab with high-speed internet is available for student use.

COURSESWhile studying abroad in Orvieto you will enroll in four classes (all in English). Courses will cover topics ranging from classics, history, art and architecture, to Italian culture, politics, and theology. All students will participate in a core course centered around the study tour.

HOUSINGYou and your fellow students will live in apartments located in the historic district of Orvieto, within easy walking distance of school. Most apartments are shared by four students and contain two double occupancy bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a living room. Your housing fee covers expenses including water, gas, and electricity bills, as well as a weekly cleaning of the apartment. Sheets and towels are provided.
