I plan on rewriting the end of The Metamorphosis by Kafka.

He remained in this state of empty and peaceful reflection until the tower clock

struck three in the morning. He hung on to see the growing light outside the window.

Then his head sank involuntarily to the floor and his last feeble breadth streamed from his

nostrils (p.48). When Gregor awoke early in the morning he asked himself why am I on

the floor. He looked around and saw all of the furniture in his room. He scratched his

head, and noticed that he had transformed back to his normal state. He was hesitant at

first, but stood up and walked out of his room. Who are you? said Gregor. I am the

maid. said the charwomen. Gretes door slammed open and she came out running. She

ran to Gregor, arms open, and squeezed Gregor as hard as she could. Just then the other

bedroom door had open, and Herr Samsa and Frau Samsa walked out. They both had

looks as if they were seeing a ghost. The three boarders emerged from their room and

looked around in astonishment for their breakfast; they had been forgotten. Where is

breakfast? the middle gentleman gruffly demanded of the charwomen. Leave my

house at once! pronounced Herr Samsa, and pointed to the door without releasing the

women (49-50). The three boarders arose from their chairs and all had a look of disgust

on their door. They packed their things and headed quickly for the door and slammed out

making a loud banging noise when the door shut. Shell be dismissed tonight, said

Herr Samsa (p.51). Gregor confused to everything that had just occurred. What is

going on? asked Gregor. The family had sat down with Gregor and discussed with him

everything that has gone on over the past month. He was told how they had gave up hope

but were so pleased to have him back. Gregor was amazed of everything he was told, and

how he was a bug for a whole month and that his family still allowed him to stay in the

house, unaware of the future. That evening the charwomen was released after the family

had made her rearrange everything in the order they were, before Gregors

transformation. Overwhelmed by everything that was going on, the family decided to call

it a night and resume their conversations in the morning.

They decided that they would spend the day together outside of the house. All

four left the apartment together, which they had not done in months, and took a trolley

to the countryside on the outskirts of town. Their trolley car had no other passengers and

was flooded with warm sunshine (p.51). Sitting back in their seats they discussed the

future. Now knowing that everyone was capable of working besides Gregor, the family

said that they would now each work an equal amount. Grete was ecstatic to have her

brother back once again, and was so eager to tell him how much she had matured, and

how she now had a job. Although happy to be back in his normal state, Gregor wanted to

know how life was going to be different from now on. He had made a vow to his family

that from now on, he would focus less on work, and spend more time with his family.

The family was pleased to hear this news. Herr Samsa wanted to apologize to Gregor.

Herr Samsa said, Son, although you are back with us now, I want to tell you how it was

me who had hurt you, I was the one who insisted on leaving you alone, I hope that you

can forgive me. It was not like Herr Samsa to become very emotional. Gregor comforted

him with a hug, and both Frau Samsa and Grete joined in.

The next day, Gregor rose bright and early. At this moment in his life, he had to

make the decision of what direction he wanted to take his life. Should I go back to

work? Should I work from home and spend more time with my family? These were a

few questions Gregor had asked himself. With all this time to think, Gregor tried to see if

he could recall anything from when he was transformed. As he was thinking he rolled

over in his bed. A sharp pain rushed through his back. When he rubbed his back, it was

tender to touch right in the middle of his back. He walked over to the mirror and to his

surprise had a bruise the size of melon. It was at this moment Gregor became dizzy and

went to lay back into his bed. Flashes were running through his head, it was though a

movie were being played from the last months. Loud screams filled his head, the pains he

had felt before were reminded. Terrible images overtook his head, and thats all he could

see. It has to go, (p.46). The words of Grete were replaying over and over. This

creature persecutes us and drives out the boarders; it obviously wants to take over the

whole apartment and throw us out into the gutter(47). For hours these images and

painful words flashed in his head, causing him anger, making his body shake in fury.

Although Gregor was told by his family that they had given up, and that is why

they began to no longer attend to him and feed him, it never would have crossed his

mind, how disgustfully they treated him. My own family he thought. How could someone

who you took care of for so long, just abandon you in a time of need? I was the one who

brought food to the table, I am the one who was able to maintain the roof over our heads,

I am the one who paid the bills, I am the one who did everything in this family! Gregor

shouted. This rage caused Gregor to grab his coat and run outside. He began walking

with no destination in mind. With the feeling of betrayal, Gregor could barely walk, his

body shaking in anger. Multiple times he would lean against buildings or trees to support

himself, and to pause from his journey.

Meanwhile back at the house, Frau and Herr Samsa, had awoken and over

breakfast were discussing how life would be now. After all this hard work I have been

putting in over these past months, I think it is fair if I let Gregor be the one to work

again, said Herr Samsa. To her disappointment Frau Samsa did not see these words

coming from Herr Samsa. She was upset that they were going back on what was

discussed earlier, of the family working a equal part.

I will not go back, no longer will I stand for this, were the thoughts of Gregor.

He continued his journey for hours, walking all through town. Contemplating his next

move, and how he was going to seek revenge on his family. They will pay for this. For I

am the one who allowed them to live, now I have the choice of how their life will end.
