SELWYN United Methodist Church Newsletter September 2019 A New Church 1 Most of you know by now that we are discussing with Grace United Methodist Church the possibility of merging our congregations. No decision has been made but both churches have appointed Vision Committeesto meet and try to determine the best outcome for everyone. We have also hired a consultant from the Western North Carolina Community Development Corporation (the place where Roy Helm worked) to assist us in our deliberations. The consultant, Karen Easter Bayne, has met with our Vision Committees on several occasions and with our pastors as well. The first question that most people have asked me is, If we combine, which church will we meet in?I understand why that is the foremost question that members have, but its too early to make that decision. What our Vision Committees are trying to understand first is what does God want us to be if we combine our congregations. Looking at those who live in this community, what kind of ministry does God want us to have? Once we determine where God is leading us in this setting, then we will have a better idea of where we should meet and worship. The other thing that our committees have decided together is that instead of calling our efforts a possible merger,it makes more sense to talk about the possibility of creating a new church”. Others who have been successful at doing what we are considering have reported that becoming a new church is the only way to do so. If we simply combine and continue to do the same things we have always done, we will only postpone the inevitable. We must become something new so that we can reach younger generations who are not currently attending our churches. As you can see there is a great deal to think about. Unfortunately, the answers are not easy. Ultimately, both congregations will get to vote to approve or disapprove what the Vision Committees recommend. Each of us will have to be open to com- promise and willing to make some sacrifices in order to do what s best for Gods ministry. I just hope that all of you will be in daily prayer, asking God to show us how we can best please him in all that we say and do. Blessings, Pastor Brooks

A New Church

Most of you know by now that we are discussing with Grace United Methodist Church the possibility of merging our congregations. No decision has been made but both churches have appointed “Vision Committees” to meet and try to determine the best outcome for everyone. We have also hired a consultant from the Western North Carolina Community Development Corporation (the place where Roy Helm worked) to assist us in our deliberations. The consultant, Karen Easter Bayne, has met with our Vision Committees on several occasions and with our pastors as well. The first question that most people have asked me is, “If we combine, which church will we meet in?” I understand why that is the foremost question that members have, but it’s too early to make that decision. What our Vision Committees are trying to understand first is what does God want us to be if we combine our congregations. Looking at those who live in this community, what kind of ministry does God want us to have? Once we determine where God is leading us in this setting, then we will have a better idea of where we should meet and worship. The other thing that our committees have decided together is that instead of calling our efforts a possible “merger,” it makes more sense to talk about the possibility of creating a “new church”. Each of us will have to be open to com-promise and willing to make some sacrifices in order to do what’s best for God’s ministry. I just hope that all of you will be in daily prayer, asking God to show us how we can best please him in all that we say and do.

Blessings, Pastor Brooks

Senior Adult Ministry

Missions Dinner Church

Dinner Church will be starting in September. Dinner Church is a time to fellowship with other people in the community and, along with feeding the homeless/hungry, it will be a time to read scripture, study the Word and even sing a song or two.

The meals will be prepared and served 5:30 - 7:00pm at Aldersgate United Methodist Church located at 5338 Nations Ford Road. Please arrive between 1:30 - 5:30 to help set-up and prepare the meal.

The first meal will be Monday, September 16th at 5:30pm. All meals will be served on Monday nights every other week.

Please contact me or the church office to help those who have already volunteered including Tom Harris, Pam Lee, Mike Lynn, Sally Rose, Kelly Burkholder, Barbara Helm, QB Cong Vo, Blanca Leyve, Libney Torres, Hylan Torres, Raul Torres, and Jacob Torres.

As we collaborate with Grace UMC and Aldersgate UMC to move forward in this new mission program may we be reminded that, as we help those in need, we are serving the Lord. Thanks to all, Jackie Shore Reminders --Pick up a few extra items for the Loaves & Fishes bins in the atrium. --Montclaire Elementary School was grateful to receive the school supplies that were collected during August. Thanks!

An Invitation Greetings to the members of Grace UMC, Selwyn UMC, and Aldersgate UMC! I hope you are having a wonderful summer! As August began, I found myself thinking of the many ways that music finds its way into our worship and the lives of all who attend our churches. I’m in the process of planning the worship music for the church year. I want to extend a sincere invitation to all churchgoers to consider becoming involved in our Music Ministry pro-gram. Of course, we always need singers, ringers, and instru-mentalists, but there are many other ways that you can get involved. We also could use dancers, readers, sound equipment personnel, actors, media enthusi-asts, and the list goes on and on as to what can be utilized when we work together in our worshiping! If you have talent that you would like to share, please contact me. If you have ideas about worship, please contact me. If you just want to talk, feel free to call, text, or email me anytime! In our combined ministry, David Hutchings (Music Guy) 704-577-0546 [email protected]

Newsletter September 2019

Preschool news – September 2019 The teachers and I are back in full force, preparing the Education Wing for the new school year. It is exciting to see the new themes going up, the room arrangements, and the fresh-ness of new beginnings. Our teachers work hard to make the rooms warm and inviting! Education Wing usage notes:

The doors are kept locked unless there is a scheduled Church activity planned with proper adult supervision, such as Sunday School or babysitting for a church event. Contact the church office to reserve and get access to rooms.

Rooms are to be cleaned and straightened after each use, such as wiping down tables, disposing of food trash, etc. Please leave rooms like you found them so that pre-school teachers can focus on greeting & teaching their students.

Playground notes:

For safety reasons, the Preschool will not use the playground until dead branches hanging in the top of the big oak tree can be pruned out. This will require the tree specialist to get to the top of the tree. Estimates are being requested for this work now.

Once pruning is completed, we will schedule new mulch and sand to bring it back up to par.

Want to help speed up the process? Consider making a donation to the Church or Pre-school, and designate it for Playground Maintenance.

Fall openings still available. Please tell your friends and neighbors about our wonderful school. Your recommendations are our biggest source of new students. A few last summer camp memories: Attendance was amazing. (We are one of the very few preschools that offers community enrollment for children this young.)

Reminder -

Link your Harris Teeter card to Selwyn UMC Preschool code 4255. You may link your card at Harris Teeter or sign the clipboard in the lobby and Sally will link it for you.

Office Depot/Office Max - give our school number at the store or online:
