To make Sanskrit language job-oriented

As has been stated in the Vision, Mission and Objectives of the institution,

college strives to impart the knowledge of ancient Indian classical scriptures,

literature, critical theories, traditions of rituals and astrology, and mythology along

with the learning of Sanskrit language to young learners through effective

implementation of the curriculum designed by the affiliating university – Maharshi

Panini Sanskrit Evam Vedic Vishvavidyalaya, Ujjain (MP). The vision, mission and

objectives of the college are communicated to the students and other stakeholders

through various means like displaying at visibly prominent place in the college

premise, prospectus of the college distributed with admission form, advertisement for

the admission through local news papers, pamphlets published and distributed as an

initiative to acquaint people about the college and its objectives and also through

religious and social congregations with which many members of the teaching faculty

and students are closely associated with. Vision, Mission and Objectives of the

institution are also mentioned in its website and also communicated to various

stakeholders, specially parents through meetings during College Chalo Abhiyan (move

towards the college), an initiative taken by the Dept. of Higher Education, Govt. of

Madhya Pradesh to increase GER in institutions of higher learning.

1.1.2 How does the institution develop and deploy action plans for effective

implementation of the curriculum? Give details of the process and substantiate

through specific example(s).

Curriculum for the institution is developed by the affiliating

university i.e. Maharshi Panini Sanskrit Evam Vedic Vishvavidyalaya, Ujjain (MP).

For Sanskrit and allied subjects, generally referred to as Ka Varg, syllabus has been

designed by the university itself through its various Board of Studies and for

undergraduate social science subjects like Economics, Sociology, Political Science,

History etc and for languages like Hindi, English, Marathi etc, generally referred to

Page 27: Self-Study Report - Madhya Pradeshhighereducation.mp.gov.in/NAAC/IndoreSanskrit_SSR_31May2016.pdf · I certify that the data included in this Self-study Report (SSR) are true to the

SSR- Govt. Sanskrit College, Indore (M.P.)

27

as Kha Varg, the syllabus is designed by Central Board of Studies, the Dept. of

Higher Education, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh. For the effective implementation of

the curriculum members of the teaching faculty are advised to choose

papers/topics of their expertise and liking in the beginning of the session.

Teachers are required to develop a teaching plan for their respective papers for

each semester and are encouraged to share with students and also required to

adhere to it. Head of the department monitors the implementation of the

teaching plan through regular meetings. Regular interaction with teachers helps in

removing the hurdles, if any in the implementation of the curriculum. IQAC plays a

very constructive role in effective implementation of the curriculum by organizing

regular meetings.

1.1.3 What type of support (procedural and practical) do the teachers receive (from the

University and/or institution) for effectively translating the curriculum and improving teaching

practices?

For the effective translation of the curriculum and improving teaching

practices, college provides substantial support to the members of teaching faculty in

form of books, e-content, teaching aids etc. Teachers are encouraged to update

their subject knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, workshops and short

term courses. For example in the current academic session 2015-16 in all 40

seminars, conferences, workshops and short term courses have been attended by

the teachers that puts an average of 4 attended by per faculty per session. Similarly

70% of teaching faculty has attended requisite number of Orientation and Refresher

Courses i.e. 01 Orientation Course and 03 Refresher Courses. Rest 30% of teaching

faculty is in the process of attending these courses to update their subject

knowledge. Having an excellent teacher – student ratio of 1:10, weaker students are

mentored by the teachers so that they may cope up with the syllabus. For this

Page 28: Self-Study Report - Madhya Pradeshhighereducation.mp.gov.in/NAAC/IndoreSanskrit_SSR_31May2016.pdf · I certify that the data included in this Self-study Report (SSR) are true to the

28

college has functional Shikshak-Abhibhavak Yojna (Teacher-Parent Scheme) in place

to monitor the attendance and academic growth of the students.

1.1.4 Specify the initiatives taken up or contribution made by the institution for effective

curriculum delivery and transaction on the Curriculum provided by the affiliating University

or other Statutory agency.

For effective curriculum delivery and transaction college organizes Zero

Classes in the beginning of each semester to bridge the gap of the knowledge of the

students. Similarly departmental seminars and interactive programmes like group

discussions are regularly organized to refresh the understanding of the students.

Workshops on Karma Kaand (Rituals and Dharmic Practices) are regularly organized

by the Sanskrit department to sharpen the skills of the students in religious rituals.

Departments like Sanskrit, Economics, English etc have made dozens of Power Point

Presentations to effectively deliver the contents of the syllabus.

1.1.5 How does the institution network and interact with beneficiaries such as industry, research

bodies and the university in effective operationalisation of the curriculum?

The institution primarily strives to impart the knowledge of Sanskrit and

ancient Indian culture and traditions to students. Therefore, it does not have any

industry interface as has been generally used in the modern sense. But it has

informal linkages with prominent temples and ashramas of the city where students

of the college perform religious rites, recite Vedic hymns and do required Karma

Kaand. It is mandatory for the final year students of both UG and PG to select one

skill oriented Project. Many of the students opt for teaching Sanskrit language in

schools for their project work, thus college develops links with many schools that

may eventually come out as feeder institution for the college. For effective

operationalization of the curriculum, members of the college teaching faculty

interact with their counterparts of affiliating university.

1.1.6 What are the contributions of the institution and/or its staff members to the

development of the curriculum by the University?(number of staff members/departments

represented on the Board of Studies, student feedback, teacher feedback, stakeholder feedback

provided, specific suggestions etc.

Page 29: Self-Study Report - Madhya Pradeshhighereducation.mp.gov.in/NAAC/IndoreSanskrit_SSR_31May2016.pdf · I certify that the data included in this Self-study Report (SSR) are true to the

under the purview of the affiliating university)by it? If ‘yes’, give details on the process

(’Needs Assessment’, design, development and planning) and the courses for which

the curriculum has been developed.

No, college does not develop curriculum for any other course that

comes under the purview of the affiliating university.

1.1.8 How does institution analyze/ensure that the stated objectives of curriculum are achieved

in the course of implementation?

Learning of Sanskrit language and religious, literary and philosophical treatise

helps students in enriching them with ancient glory of India. Substantial number

of the students opt for Karma Kaand and Jyotish as one of the electives. These

subjects enhance their skills thus making them self-employed. Thus objectives of

the curriculum are ensured in the course of implementation.

2.1 Student Enrollment and Profile

2.1.1 How does the college ensure publicity and transparency in the admission process?

The admission process of the college is widely publicized through banners

and advertisement and is carried out in transparent manner. Dept. of Higher

Education, Govt. of Madhya Pradesh for the last couple of years has enunciated

centralized on-line admission process for all its colleges barring minority institutes

or college with special nature. Govt. Sanskrit College, Indore along with 08 Sanskrit

colleges of state all affiliated to Maharshi Panini Sanskrit Evam Vedic

Vishwavidyalaya, Ujjain are exempted from online process of admission. Principals,

teachers of feeder schools are invited to college after the announcement of class

XIIth results and are encouraged to send their students who are interested in the

learning of Sanskrit and allied subjects to seek admission. College Chalo Abhiyan

has been initiated by the Higher Education Department of the state to improve

GER. Internal admission committees are formed in the beginning of the session to

facilitate the smooth admission of the students. Generally all the students who

apply are given admission.

2.1.2 Explain in detail the criteria adopted and process of admission (Ex. (i) merit (ii) common

admission test conducted by state agencies and national agencies (iii) combination of merit

and entrance test or merit, entrance test and interview (iv) any other) to various programmes of

the Institution.

The college functions on the simple principle of “higher education for all.”

Within its capacity the college embarks upon as many students as it can. Efforts are

being made that no student eager to join a course offered by the college is

deprived of getting admission. Merit is the only criterion for admission yet seats

offered by the college generally out number applicants.

2.1.3 Give the minimum and maximum percentage of marks for admission at entry level for

each of the programmes offered by the college and provide a comparison with other colleges

Page 39: Self-Study Report - Madhya Pradeshhighereducation.mp.gov.in/NAAC/IndoreSanskrit_SSR_31May2016.pdf · I certify that the data included in this Self-study Report (SSR) are true to the

7.3 Best Practices

7.3.1 Give details of any two best practices which have contributed to

better academic and administrative functioning of the Institute.

Practice 1

Title of the Practice

Guru-Shishya teaching tradition practice

Goals

Shishya method which has been in style for centuries altogether.

To help the student for the correct pronunciation of mantras, sutras etc.

Recitation of Veda richas with Hasta- sanchalanam (saswar mantra

path).

To teach the students about the yagya vigyana and the procedure.

Inculcating traditional values and cultural ethos.

To foresee the overall development of the students analyzing the

learning of students in a particular time period.

The Context

Since 1920, the institute has been the major centre of sanskrit teaching,

The institute had always been a fore runner in the Sanskrit scenario and

had always strived, not just to save the rapidly diminishing Sastric

knowledge systems, but to proliferate them in the modern context.

The traditional lecture method was used to teach the ancient Sastric texts

initially. However, the need of using modern teaching techniques has

been realized to help students stay abreast of the rapidly changing

academic scenario. Hence, the institute is working to deliver the

knowledge with the help of using the presentations and modern

techniques.

teachers and lecturers in various institutions.

Several students are working for the sanskrit with the help of astrology,

vastu consultation, karmkandiya anushthans etc. 90% of the students of

institute are able to earn their livelihood.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

The time require to perform such traditional practice is high and

continuous training is essential.

sangoshthis to give students the platform for skill enhancement.

Like

A national seminar on 'Bharat ki himalayin sanskriti' - in this seminar

various scholars from the country had participated in the event and students

got the advantage to learn the cross cultural values and beliefs. More than

150 sanskrit learners have participated in this seminar.

Evidence of Success

More than 150 learners from different parts of the country have participated

in this National seminar stated above. This type of events spread a message

of fellow feeling, mutual understanding and encouragement among the

Sanskrit students of the Country. Such events are greatly influencing the

Academic as well as Administrative functioning of the institution in many

ways.

Problems encountered and resources required

The only problem in conducting such events is the limited financial strength

of the institute. These festivals can be conducted on more grand scale.

Any other information regarding Innovations and Best Practices which

the university would like to include.

Organising Sanskrit Saturday in every week in which the sanskrit

teacher and students communicate in sanskrit language only. It

helps

To increase the proficiency of students in sanskrit communication.

To help the new students familiar with the language.

To develop the environment of sanskrit communication.

Traning for performance of sanskrit plays.

Celebration of national as well as regional festivals like Ganesh

Chaturthi, Saraswathi Puja, Navratri poojan etc.

Engagement of visiting professors and outside experts to guide both

the faculty and students.

The digitization of rare manuscripts in the library of the college is

proposed for future.

Strengths:

The college is delivering the education of Sanskrit prachya for 197 years.

Prosperous library: There are about 189 manuscripts and more than 25000

rare reference books and magazines on different subjects.

Weakness:

Due to the lack of employment opportunities student are less interested.

The students are unaware about the future scopes regarding the courses thus

are not very interested in this stream.

Opportunities:

There are huge opportunities for Sanskrit scholars globally thus the

curriculum can be linked with smart education.

Challenges:

To develop employment oriented course curriculum of Yoga, Vastu, Jyotish

and Karmkand.

To develop Sanskrit communication skill.

To develop a distinctive approach of Sanskrit learning in context of

comparative languages.

Strength : Department is dedicated for student knowledge, Progress, and

Enrichment.

Weakness –They have not good handwriting, error in grammar, grasping

power and memory level are also low. So I have to teach them on their level.

If I teach them on my level, they are unable to show better output and better

performance.

Challenge- I have to make effective attempt to increase mental level

of students. I have to encourage them for competitive Exam of UPSC and

PSC of other states. There must be a separate departmental library.

Future Plan - I have planned that students of my department should visit

Central Museum of Indore and Historical Museum of other state. Connect to

History subject with Archaeological Branch, Military Science Branch,

Tourism and Architecture Branch. So that student have got a vast field for

better carrier and overall progress in their life.
