WELCOME 2013 has witnessed the migration to LTE become acatalyst for self organising networks. As LTE promisesgreater network capacity, the supply of bandwidth willstimulate the development, implementation andoperation of many new applications, each with uniquebandwidth and performance needs.

Faced with an increasingly complex network, the need forimproved operations and OSS has seen SON introduced aspart of the 3GPP LTE network framework. SON is expectedto be deployed over time and ultimately have a dramaticallypositive effect on network operations and OSS.

For 2013, we evaluate SON capabilities in the context ofother complimentary tools for LTE such as small cells,WiFi, C-RAN, SDN and network optimisation. Whilst inprevious years the benefits of SON have been highlighted,2013 has seen more use cases being tested and I’mdelighted to welcome a stellar line up of leading operatorspresent their strategies for SON deployment.

With brand new keynote sessions and speakers, pleaseread through the brochure and see exactly how you canbenefit from attending this year’s forum

I look forward to welcoming you in Nice!

PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH 2013 1.30PM - 5.00PM

LED BY HAIG SARKISSIAN, Principal Consultants, Wireless 20/20, LLC

4G LTE networks promise to deliver much greater capacity primarilydue to the use of small cell technology. As the number of small cellsincrease, their interaction with each other and with the macro networkbecomes complex and necessitates automation. SON technologypromises to automate the configuration, interference management, reconfiguration and operation of the RAN resources over time, in orderto optimize investments in the RAN network.

This workshop will examine a list of SON and SON-like features, seehow they work and what they mean for operators. We will pay specialattention to the cost of deploying SON and evaluate the benefits of SONusing quantifiable metrics to assess the economic impact of SON onthe business case of 4G LTE service providers.

The emphasis of this hands-on business planning workshop will be toexamine the financial impact of deploying SON and to evaluate whichSON features will result in quantifiable savings or network efficiencyimprovements that can be measured or realistically estimated basedon the cost savings, network performance enhancements or recoupingotherwise lost revenue.

Session 1 – Definition of SON and SON-Like Features

• Self Configuration • Automatic Neighbor Relation Management• Load Balancing• Interference Coordination• Coverage and Capacity Optimization

Session 2 – Measuring the Economic Impact of SON

• Cost savings Calculations for SON• Network Efficiency Improvements due to SON• Recouping of Lost Revenue Made Possible by SON• Business Case Impact of SON

Session 3 – Case Study of SON and its Impact on a 4GOperator Business Case

• Business Case Assumptions• Coverage and Capacity Roll Out Plan • Cost to deploy SON• Cost of operations without SON• Benefits of SON• Sensitivity Analysis of a 4G LTE Business Case

In order to gauge market perception regarding LTE-launch strategies and understandthe state of European networks, Informa conducted an industry survey, which includedhigh level, detailed questions dealing with the perception and reality of LTE-networkdeployments in Europe.

The overall sample was 442 respondents, including 112 European operators: 68 mobile-only, one fixed-only and 43 with both fixed and mobile assets. When asked whether anLTE network was live or pending launch, a staggering 96.3% answered positively, withonly 3.7% saying that they are not planning to launch LTE. Regarding the mode ofdeployment, there was an even split among the three primary options (see fig. 1).

The majority of operators said that competitive or marketing issues were the biggestreasons for deploying LTE. Revenue opportunities and capacity constraints scoredlower (see fig. 2). This illustrates that although operators talk about trafficbottlenecks and capacity problems, marketing and business issues are driving LTE-network deployments in Europe. There are also specific market drivers (e.g. ruraldeployments in Europe), but the majority of operators still chose competitivedifferentiation as the biggest driver. This may change as LTE deployments mature andmore than one LTE operator enters a market.
