INTRODUCTION TO THE GADGETSelf or Wireless Charging is the current trendy method to charge a mobile or

supply electricity to the battery of a mobile without any wire medium(mobile charger).

This job is accomplished by the microwaves which are present in the upper layer of Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Hence, microwave signals act as a medium for Self-Charging Mobiles. The microwave signals involve Wifi,3G and 4G signals.

NEED OF WIRELESS OR SELF CHARGINGThere is an immediate need of this technology in the current trend as an

individual cannot imagine his life without a mobile ,which plays a very vital role in his life…

He/She cannot always carry a mobile charger along with them unless they are involved in a journey or a long travel …

First and foremost…Electricity or electric medium is not available always ,especially in emergency situations…

Therefore, the proposal of wireless or self charging has been made to overcome all the above discomforts…

Ofcourse, this new technology is and will be more advantageous than the previous one…

The mobile phone gets charged as long as the user utilizes the services provided by the mobile networks(GSM,3G,4G and WiFi)

RADIOCHARGINGSelf or Wireless Charging of a mobile can be done in many ways. Few of them

are:-Charging by the means of Solar power(in the form of solar batteries, photovoltaic mobile batteries),Charging by the method of Electromagnetic Induction ,Charging by the means of Micro and Radio waves(Radiocharging) etc..

The most popular Self or Wireless Charging technique used often is ”RADIOCHARGING” which we be discussing in this section.

A Radio wave once transmitted, propagates in all possible directions until it reaches an antenna tuned to proper frequency to receive it(Receiver). In this case, the receiver is the mobile phone.

The microwave signal is transmitted from the transmitter side along with the message signal using a special kind of antennas called slotted wave guided antennas(Rectenna) at a frequency of 2.45GHz.

Page 6: Self charging mobiles

CONSTRUCTIONThe necessary equipment needed for the working of self charging phones are:-

Transmitter RF Cable Sensor Rectenna

The Transmitter section consists of two parts:- Magnetron Slotted wave guided antenna

Page 7: Self charging mobiles

Magnetron:-The cavity magnetron is a high-powered vacuum tube that generates microwaves using the interaction of a stream of electrons with a magnetic field while moving past a series of open metal cavities (cavity resonators)

Page 8: Self charging mobiles

Slotted Wave Guided Antenna:-A slotted waveguide is a waveguide that is used as an antenna in microwave radar applications. Prior to its use in surface search radar, such systems used a parabolic segment reflector.

Page 9: Self charging mobiles

RF Cable:-A coaxial RF connector (radio frequency connector) is an electrical connector designed to work at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range.

Page 10: Self charging mobiles

The Sensor:-The role of this sensor is:-It checks whether the user is in the network coverage (or) whether he uses the mobile network services. This sensor converts “frequency to voltage”. In India, the operating frequency of mobile network is 900MHz or

1800MHz(GSM mobile system communication). This sensor acts like a switch to trigger the Rectenna circuit. The name of the sensor is:-”LM2907”

Page 11: Self charging mobiles

Rectenna:- The process of Rectification is done by a device known as Rectenna. It is simply the combination of “Rectifier” and “Antenna”. It is used to convert microwave power into DC or electric power.

Page 12: Self charging mobiles

THE WORKING PRINCIPLEThe Operation involved behind the working of this gadget can be summarized

in three steps:- The microwave signal is transmitted along with message signal

using the slotted waveguide antenna. The sensor searches for the mobile signal with the help of

Rectenna. Rectenna receives the transmitted power and converts the

electromagnetic(microwave) energy into electric energy. Sensor and Rectenna are the basic addition to the mobile

phones which make the mobiles self charged. These two parts form the Receiver section.

DESIGN OVERVIEW

Page 14: Self charging mobiles

ADVANTAGES AND APPLICATIONSADVANTAGES:- As mentioned earlier, the usage of portable chargers or chargers

manufactured by different trademark companies is eliminated. The phone gets charged as long as you have a conversation with the

caller (or) whenever you utilize the WiFi services. There is no risk of electric shocks wile the mobile phone is getting

charged. At the same time, you can save electricity.

Page 15: Self charging mobiles

APPLICATIONS:- This technology is first implemented by “NOKIA” brand. It has

launched the self charging scheme in its recent models”NOKIA LUMIA 1020” and “NOKIA LUMIA 920”.

Other mobile brands that are implementing this technology are:-LG(Nexus 4,Nexus 5),Samsung(Galaxy S4),Asus(Nexus 7),Sony Xperia etc.

OTHER WAYS OF CHARGING A MOBILEThere are many alternatives of charging a mobile(Case Studies):- Using Winds To Create Power for Mobile-Wind Farms are an excellent

alternate source of power, which is gaining traction all over the world. But can winds be used to charge a mobile phone? Tjeerd Veenhoven,A renowned scientist from The Netherlands had created iFan, which uses wind power to charge up an iPhone. Using the computer fan which is found in every desktop and laptop, he has designed a system wherein iPhone can be charged within 5 hours.

Cook Food And Charge Your Mobile-This method would be a sure shot hit among Indian ladies when it is finally launched: Pan Charger. A Japanese innovation firm has created a pan charger which can use heat to produce enough energy to charge a phone. The Pan Charger, as the name coined by their CEO, is made up of base which contains strips of ceramic thermoelectric material. The temperature differentials and the 100 degree C water inside the pan allow the device to create power, which can be extracted using a USB device. Any device which can operate on 2W/400mA can be charged on this pan. In fact, it is estimated that an iPhone can be charged within 5 hours!

Page 18: Self charging mobiles

Charge your phone by SHOUTING at it-If we make a comparison between sound and power, then acoording to the analysis:-A 100dB sound would generate 50 millivolts of power. This 100dB sound includes noise of traffic ,jet plane etc..A normal phone requires 5 to 10 volts of power to get charged. Scientists from Korea are conducting a research:- They have placed two electrodes which are connected by minute nano-strands of zinc oxide. When a human being shouts, then the vibrations caused by the sound are absorbed by these nano-strands which produces energy. In fact, other background noises such as traffic noise etc can also be used to generate this energy. Research is still on, but it ‘sounds’ very interesting!

Soft-Drink-Powered Phone-Doctors all over the world fume over carbonated drinks which are full of sugar and fat. But a Chinese designer Daizi Zheng has come up with a tremendous idea to charge a mobile phone (using Bio-batteries) with Soft-drinks. Thereby, device was modified to include a chemical board capable of converting carbohydrates and sugar into energy. The phone user needs to pour soft drinks in a special cell which transforms the energy released by soda, sugar and carbons to create electric charge which can easily charge a phone. Once the charge finishes, only water and oxygen remains, thereby making it economically sustainable as well!

DEMAND FOR THIS TECHNOLOGY IN THE CURRENT ARENA The foundation of the actual self charging technology is not properly laid in

many parts of the globe. As the technology states:-”capturing some of the radio waves that the phone transmits when connecting to cell-phone towers and Wi-Fi routers, converting them to electricity, and feeding that power back to the phone’s battery”.

This technology came into limelight at the “Consumer Electronic Show”(CES) organized at Las Vegas.A Washington based Company “Ossia”showcased its product at the fair.”COTA” is the central hub that is source for the wireless transmission. It is cylindrical in shape.

Cota serves as a central hub, sort of like a wireless router, that pushes out targeted energy through wavelengths to charge devices without having to plug them in or place them on a pad.

This Cota product can power a cota-equipped device within a 30 foot radius creating a new platform in the wireless technology.

Page 21: Self charging mobiles

This follows existing technologies that take advantage of smartphones’ wireless charging standard, known as Qi. The company Qi Wireless, for example, produces pads that charge phones when placed on them.

As this technology is very much expensive and require high skilled technicians ,many of the companies are not showing interest to collaborate with Ossia.

Beside this,a new technology is completely justifying this self charging mechanism. The Self Charging “Phone Screens” and “Cases” have also emerged whose ultimate goal is self charging.

With this self charging smartphone case, your phone will be able to charge itself. Up on Kickstarted, “Nikola Labs” case (for the iPhone 6 and Galaxy S6) will be able to capture energy wasted by your smartphone, and reuse it, by charging your device. In a nutshell, your smartphone is consuming a lot of energy while making a phone call, browsing the web (generally, while connected to cell towers or WiFi routers). This case captures part of the dissipated energy and sends it back to the battery. While it will not top off your battery, it will definitely manage to slow down depletion, adding extra hours to your device’s uptime.

CONCLUSIONSelf or Wireless Charging Technology has created a big hope in the mind of a

mobile user.Though it has few demerits, every technical person’s goal should be using of self charging phone.

In the coming future, we hope that all the smartphone users should turn into a self charged mobile phone users.

We hope the startup of this technology should be founded in India working towards this technology and we expect atleast few users to enjoy this technology because a small number may turn into a huge number which finally creates craze among the people.(like usage of smartphones)
