The Europa project is part of the master plan designed by Christian de Portzamparc to restructure and densify Rue de la Loi. The 92 meters high tower is ideally located at the intersection of Rue de la Loi and Chaussée d’Etterbeek, in the heart of the European quarter. For six years, B2AI proposed various concepts and designs. The last version I worked on is an upgrade due to the lack of residential units. Therefore, we had to rethink the project to include both offices (22 floors) and residential (20 floors) into one volume instead of two separate entities. We also designed a new façade based on the previous study of fixed louvers. The building is now covered with a unique skin that unifies and protects it. Made of louvers that transforms and adapts along the façade, the skin gives a new dynamic to the tower.

This existing building from the sixties is situated on the Saint Jean Square, between the Grand-Place and the Place du Sablon in the center of Brussels. The purpose of this project is to completely renovate the building to improve the quality of the working environment. For instance, by maximizing natural light benefits, opening working spaces and installing technical requirements such as insolation and ventilation. After winning the contest, we needed to re-design some of the internal spaces and the façade. Designed to give the building the solar protection needed to be sustainable, the façade uses a fixed solar shading solution. This system gives the building a new identity while keeping the original sixties design and its harmony with the rest of the square. We have now introduce the permit and are preparing the execution phase.

This project, developed by Care for Life and designed by BUROII & ARCHI+I, aims to respond to the challenge presented by an ageing population. The project is divided in 3 phases. The first one is already completed and fully operational. I joined the project at the end of the second phase to control the construction site and for the design of the third phase. The project is situated in Velm’s countryside in the middle of appel tree plantations which gives to the residents a peaceful environment. With single rooms and fully equipped flats, the building is also totally accessible to wheel chairs.

“This project includes everything from urban planning all the way through to project completion for 1.029 modernist apartment units. The site was a modernist icon in the 1960′s, it was created for the World’s Fair in 1958. It was inspired by the idea of people being completely surrounded by nature, and living in a garden.” – B2AI
The current project is composed of a complete renovation in multiple phases and the construction of two new buildings. I was mainly involved in the last phase of the construction part. The goal was to integrate the new buildings in the existing situation by using the same façade material used for the renovation of the older buildings.

ART SCHOOL
A R T S C H O O L
The school is composed of different major functions implemented on the site so as to blend in with the natural slope and create separate outdoor areas such as playgrounds, performance spaces and bleachers. As a passive building, the school is made of a concrete beam structure and covered with a skin insulated with wood and profile glass U-shaped. The glass can be transparent, frosted or opal to allow the natural light, but protect the building from excessive sunlight.

Positioned at the beginning of the plot, the building marks the entrance of the neighbourhood by creating a visual appeal. The Building’s double ground floor is devoted to commercial activities to respond to the status of the road. Meanwhile the upper floors are reserved for housing. The building is composed of different types of accommodation to allow a mix of types of family and a modulation in its façade. The apartments are arranged to create varied views and their superposition can generate terraces for each unit. The building is composed of a hard concrete center for its stability to the winds. The façades are composed of wooden prefabricated panels to facilitate execution.

GREEN MARKET
T H E G R E E N M A R K E T
The purpose of this project was to use the space along the railway by building a park for walking and recreation while keeping the existing vegetable gardens. The park is connected to a covered market. This market creates a link between the ‘cage aux ours‘ and the morning market along the canal, where it will be supplied. The covered area can be used as a space for sport as well as a place for shows. Furthermore, the park hosts panels for taggers to express their art. These panels separate and secure the park from the railway.
