The Tabernacle• God told Moses to make Him a sanctuary (called a

tabernacle), a place where He could be among His people, and provided all the details of how it was to be constructed. He also gave instructions for a chest to be made which would be called the Ark of the Covenant and gave Moses two stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments to put inside. The tabernacle was to be made of fine materials and would consist of a Holy Place and a Most Holy Place. The latter would be separated by a curtain and would house the Ark of the Covenant. He made Aaron, Moses’s brother, the High Priest and Aaron’s sons Priests and told them what clothing to make for themselves.

• When Moses came down from the mountain he saw that the people had become wild. They had taken their gold jewelry, melted it down and made a golden calf that they were worshiping. He became angry with them and threw down the tablets, smashing them to pieces. He commanded that those people be put to death and God brought down a plague on the rest to punish them. Moses went back up the mountain and pleaded with God to forgive them and the plague ended, and He replaced the two tablets containing the law.

• After the tabernacle was constructed, God settled a cloud over it during the day and a pillar of fire at night. In the morning if the cloud was there they stayed where they were and when it was lifted the Israelites moved on.
