SEK-CAP MISSION Address the causes and conditions of
poverty by uniting staff, individuals,
families, and community partners to
provide quality, comprehensive services
through compassionate, respectful
relationships.
About Us
SEK-CAP is a non-profit social service agency,
dedicated to eliminating the causes and effects
of poverty in Southeast Kansas since 1966.
Our rich history of service to the people and
communities of Southeast Kansas
demonstrates the outstanding commitment
and dedication over the years by countless
employees, volunteers, and partners.
Our services are developed to address the
following specific community needs: housing,
utilities, transportation, employment, medical
care, child care, education, nutrition, and
community resource awareness.
As a member of the national Community
Action Partnership representing over 1,000
agencies, we embrace innovation and
encourage civic involvement. We are a leader
in the state of Kansas, one of eight
organizations designated to receive
Community Service Block Grants (CSBG).
Community action changes people's lives,
embodies the spirit of hope, improves
communities and makes America a better
place to live. We care about the entire
community and are dedicated to helping
people help themselves and each other.

Our early childhood education program is
available for income-eligible families with
children age zero to five years of age.
Through this program SEK-CAP also
provides:
services to pregnant women from
conception to birth,
opportunities for families to experience
developmentally appropriate educational
activities with their children,
opportunities to strengthen families’
involvement in their child’s education
from the start.

Early Childhood Staff Employed
Of the 63 teachers employed
with SEK-CAP, 77% have a
secondary degree.
Throughout the Early Childhood Program, health is a primary initiative. We strive
to ensure that every child who enters the program has access to health and dental
care, as well as proper education around the importance of good health behaviors.
This year Early Head Start had a 92% rate of success in ensuring children had access
to both health and dental care; Head Starts’ success rate was 98%.

SEK-CAP helps low-income individuals
find safe, affordable housing by offering
rental assistance, and affordable rental
homes.
In addition, we offer home
weatherization services to lessen the
strain of utility bills and make homes
safer.

Transportation |
2015
SEK-CAP is the largest rural
general public transportation
provider in the state. We operate
both fixed-route and demand-
responsive transportation in four
counties in our service area.
This year we implemented the
Gorilla Shuttle on the Pittsburg
State University campus. The
Shuttle will pick up students and
faculty on a fixed route around
the campus.

This map illustrates SEK-CAP’s Service Area, which
includes the following 12 counties in the southeastern
most corner of the state of Kansas: Allen, Bourbon,
Chautauqua, Cherokee, Crawford, Elk, Labette, Linn,
Montgomery, Neosho, Wilson, and Woodson.
In the report area, 7.21% or 13,275 individuals are living
in households with income below 50% of the Federal
Poverty Level (FPL).
