PERFORMANCE NOTES“Seize the Day” is a rousing, showstopping song from the musical, “Newsies.” Originally a Disney movie, “Newsies” was adapted for the stage and became a hit on Broadway. The show was nominated for eight Tony’s and ended up winning two.

In short, “Newsies” is about a gang of newspaper delivery boys that strike against the local New York newspaper. “Seize the Day” is their rallying cry, and they protest and threaten to strike. It is a triumphant song and should be sung with energy and pride.

CHORAL PREPARATIONThere are many moments in this song that use a “call and response” vocal texture in the verse. This is where one melody or phrase (the “call”) is answered with a similar melody found in another vocal part (the “response”). Measures 16-19 and 25-28 are good examples of a “call and response.”

To capture the spirit of this song, isolate and practice the “call and response” moments separately. Focus on sustaining energy and excitement with each “call and response” pattern.
