LEVEL HRDF Seismic Assessment & Retrofitting of Existing Reinforced Concrete Structures 6 - 7 OCTOBER 2020 ONLINE (MS TEAMS) 9.00am – 1.00pm INTRODUCTION This content-rich workshop covers the seismic assessment and retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (RC) building structures as per the Eurocode 8: Part 3. The presentation begins with the general overview of EC 8 on seismic design and assessment. Consideration on seismic basic design and principle to EC 8 will be covered briefly in the presentation with different procedures between seismic design and assessment explained. The different methods of analysis (linear and nonlinear), including nonlinear static pushover and dynamic analysis, commonly used for seismic design and assessment of RC structures shall be discussed along with their advantages and disadvantages. There will be a brief description on performance-based engineering with guidelines on how to select the appropriate method of analysis. In addition, the approaches of modelling on different structural elements will also be highlighted. Actual case studies of several strengthening projects with different techniques will be presented, and the criteria for the selection of the strengthening interventions strategy will be explained. The evaluation of different seismic retrofitting solutions in terms of their structural responses shall be thoroughly explained. An example to illustrate the assessment of a RC building using SeismoBuild software will be provided at the end of the workshop. COURSE CONTENT 1. Dr Ehsan Nikbakht received a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering fromIslamic Azad University of Iran (IAU), Master and PhD of Engineering inStructural Engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. His PhD thesiswas entitled with numerical and experimental investigation of post-tensioned precast segmental columns with self-centring system for bridgesin seismic regions.He joined Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS in 2015. His teaching and researchinvolvements are in the areas of Structural Engineering. He has authoredseveral technical papers in the areas of reinforced concrete and earthquakeengineering. He is a member of several national and internationalprofessional organizations and he served as a reviewer for a number ofInternational journals in Structural and Earthquake Engineering disciplinesuch as Journal of Structural Engineering, ASCE; Bulletin of EarthquakeEngineering; and Structure and Infrastructure Engineering.

Assoc. Prof. Ir Dr Teo Wee received his BEng degree and PhD in CivilEngineering from the Queen’s University of Belfast, UK. He practiced asstructural engineer for several years in civil and structural consultancies in theUK. He was involved with many building structural designs as well as bridgeassessment projects.

He is currently the corporate member of the Institute of Concrete TechnologyUK (MICT), Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology UK(MIMarEST) and the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (MIEM). He is aregistered Professional Engineer (PEng) with Board of Engineers Malaysia(BEM) and Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Engineering Council UK.
