This Annual Report reflects customer service statistics and other important information as they were recorded from July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. During this year,

the Center for Vision Loss touched the lives of 14,601 people.

Seeing possibilities -

Seeing Possibilities Loss of vision – whether gradual or sudden, caused by one of the age-related eye diseases or other health conditions – results in loss of independence that can often be frightening and lonely. In 2012-2013, the Center for Vision Loss continued to provide Vision Rehabilitation programs and services which encouraged our customers to focus on seeing possibilities that would inspire and create positive change in their lives instead of concentrating on the negative. Whether our customers chose to attend the new men’s group, discover the benefi ts of using an iPad or iPhone, experiment with different kinds of magnifi cation devices in our new Low Vision Clinic in the Monroe Offi ce or explore ancient Egyptian artifacts in the new Touch Tour offered by the Penn University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, we provided a variety of tools, techniques and experiences that allowed them to enjoy life again.

Our Community Outreach also focused on seeing possibilities. Grants from the Fund to Benefi t Children and Youth and Lions District 14-K Charitable Enterprises, enabled us to purchase a second state-of-the art SPOT Vision Screener by PediaVision for the Allentown Offi ce. Using two screening devices in Lehigh and Northampton Counties this year allowed our outreach staff to provide free vision screenings for 21% more children ages 6 months to 5 years to improve their readiness for school.

During last year, seeing possibilities was important for staff as well as customers because best practices, research and information are ever-changing in the fi eld of blindness and low vision. To keep current, our staff participated in 26 different training and educational programs including CPR/AED certifi cation, American Foundation for the Blind eLearning courses, professional conferences, focus groups and demonstrations of new blindness and low vision products.

Finally, our volunteers, board members, sponsors, donors and friends in the community also believed in the importance of seeing possibilities. We thank them for their gifts of time, materials and fi nancial support which enabled us to touch the lives of 14,601 people in Lehigh, Northampton and Monroe Counties with the services and programs listed below.

The Center for Vision Loss could not accomplish its work in the community without the support of our 74-member volunteer staff. Seeing possibilities motivates them to help in many capacities including driving customers to appointments and agency activities, providing companionship for customers, brailling important agency documents, assisting with mailings and receptionist duties and providing leadership as members of the Board of Directors, Endowment Foundation Board and various committees. Our annual Volunteer Recognition Event celebrates their hard work and enthusiasm. On May 5, 2013, the following individuals received shining star awards for jobs well done: Lynn Schiavone - Knight in Shining Armor Award, Dorothy Montero - Helen Keller Award for Independence, Amy Cincera - Annie’s Angels Award, Fay Sheeler - Anne Sullivan Award, Estella Taylor - Helping Hands Community Award, Ross Wasielke - Looking Beyond Vision Award and Cheryl Miller - Louis Braille Communication Award.

Seeing Possibilities Provides InspirationOur agency’s Chrysalis Award is presented to a blind or visually impaired person who has transformed the world around them. The 2012 recipient, Dr. Francis A. Salerno, Associate Chief of Geriatrics, Lehigh Valley Health Network, has devoted his life and career to seeing possibilities and making geriatric medicine an important part of a healthy community despite his blindness. Center for Vision Loss board member Stephanie Olexa presented the award to Dr. Salerno at the Chrysalis Award Dinner on May 9, 2013. Our fi rst Accessibility Champion Awards were also presented that evening to John Kierle and C.F. Martin & Co. represented by Dave Evans and Aaron Van Why. They combined their efforts to raise money for and craft a special Braille guitar for Lt. Brad Snyder who lost his sight while serving in Afghanistan. Photos courtesy of Jeffrey Bell Photography.
