to its wind resource assessment and
siting software WAsP. While th is is
not 'rocket science', it has proven
to be an extremely powerful tool
for wind farm developers and wind
power consultants; providing almost
instant quality assurance for some of
the most critical input data t o the
wind flow and wind farm modelling.
WAsP software WAsP is a PC program
for the analysis of wind data, wind
atlas generation, wind resource
assessment, wind resource mapping,
and the siting of wind turbines and wind farms. The program,
which was released in the mid 1980's is continually being updated
and developed by the Wind Energy. Division at Ris0 DTU. Over
the years, ithas become well established and it is regarded by
many as the industry standard for wind resource assessment and
siting of wind fa rms. Today, WAsP has been employed by over
3000 users in more than 110 countries and territories around
the world. It is used by wind turbine manufacturers and ot her
companies and consultants in the wind power industry as well as
universities, research institutions and meteorological services.
Virtual globe synchronisation The main innovation in WAsP version 10 is the ab il ity to
view the wind farm project in Goog le Earth (GE). Once t he
project has been set up and ca lcu lated in WAsP, all geo
referenced data can be shown in GE at the click of a mouse :
the meteorological station, any reference sites, the wind
turbine sites and wind farm layout, land cover classification,
3D scaled models of wind turbines and masts, roses of wind
climate and power production sta tistics, and wind and

power production maps. The GE view is synchronised with
WAsP, so any changes to the wind farm project are reflected
immediately in GE. The virtual globe synchronisation provides
instant quality assurance regarding some quite basic, yet very
significant, characteristics of the wind farm and wind resource:
the position of the meteorological mast(s), the position of
the wind turbines, the wind farm layout, the classification
of the land surface cover and the different wind resource
and wind power maps. In the past, errors in such information
were not uncommon and could contribute significantly to
the uncertainty of the wind farm production estimates. In
addition, it is also possible to import background images from
the virtual globe by just a few clicks. The images are scaled
automatically and can further be used as background images
when classifying and digitising the land cover classes in the
WAsP Map Editor.
A new wind atlas for NE China
From 2007-10, China Meteorological Administration and
Riso DTU have developed a new wind atlas for NE China

Danish Wind Technology
(Dongbei). One of the main results of this project is a database
of generalised wind climates covering all of Dongbei (south of
50°N) with a horizontal resolution of 5 km. These generalised
wind climates can be used directly as input to the WAsP
software and it is therefore possible to do wind resource
assessment and siting studies anywhere in Dongbei with in a couple of hours or a few days - and see the resul ts in GE.
While the resul ts may not be as reliable as predictions based
on long-term wind data measured at a meteorologica l mast
near to the site, the wind atlas still provides reliable data for
wind farm planning and development.
The resul ts of the project wi ll be available in publ ic domain through a web site hosted by the China
Meteorolog ica I Administration.
