MAXIMIZING YOUR FOOD PLOT’S POTENTIALPlant ing food plots is the s ingle most effect ive way of attract ing, growing, and keeping wi ld l i feon your property . You should str ive to have a spring, summer, fa l l and winter food source onyour property to keep the wi ld l i fe coming year round. Whether i t ’s your f irst t ime or you havebeen plant ing for years, the fo l lowing steps wi l l ensure you maximize your food plot potent ia l .

Step 1 • Soil Testing: The most important part of p lant ing a food plot is taking a soi lsample. Choose an area that is wel l drained and gets suff ic ient sunl ight throughout the year. Take a sample of the food plot area before plant ing. A soi l sample reportprovides you with the soi l pH and nutr ient levels in that soi l . I t a lso provides recommendat ions for amounts of l ime and fert i l izer that needs to be appl ied for thefood plot species you are plant ing.

Step 2 • El iminating Weeds: Prepare your future food plot area by e l iminat ing weedswith a g lyphosate herbic ide prior to p lant ing or t i l l ing .

Step 3 • Liming/Raising Soi l pH: Apply proper amounts of l ime based on your soi lsample recommendat ion. Opt imum pH levels are needed for p lants to fu l ly ut i l ize fert i l izer and maximize root growth. A pH of 6 .3 to 7 .0 works best for most food plots .

Step 4 • Ferti l iz ing: Apply fert i l izer based on soi l sample recommendat ions beforeseeding. This wi l l provide essent ia l nutr ients for proper plant and root growth, help ingwith good establ ishment and promoting cont inuous growth.

Step 5 • Proper Ti l l ing: Ti l l ing is necessary to work the l ime and fert i l izer into thesoi l . Proper t i l l ing with the use of implements such as disc, roto-t i l ler or harrow, wi l lwork up the top 4 to 8 inches of soi l . This creates a perfect seed bed to a l low moreseeds to germinate, creat ing maximum tonnage on your plot .

Step 6 • Seeding Your Plot : For smal ler seeds, i t is best to cult i-pack or rol l your plot beforeseeding. Doing th is wi l l create a f irm seed bed. Next , broadcast your seed and cult i-pack or rol lagain , which creates proper seed-to-soi l contact . Smal l seeds need to be less than a quarter of an inch deep when planted. For larger seeds, use a p lanter , a dr i l l , or a pul l-behind spreader to d ispense the seeds. Then drag the seeds to l ight ly cover them. Plant these seeds up to ½" deep.

Step 7 • Maintaining Your Food Plot : Your food plot wi l l get a lot of grazing pressure from the resident wi ld l i fe . As long as you canmaintain enough forage on your plot , you wi l l cont inue to attract gameto your plot and keep them on your property . Be sure to fert i l ize yourplot annual ly to ensure quick recovery and maximum plant growththroughout the year.

Annual species are fast-growing, h igh-yie ld ing forage variet ies that must be planted every year. Typical ly they can be planted during the spring (warm season annuals) or fa l l (cool season annuals) .

Perennials: Perennials on the other hand, can last up to three years - and even longer insome situat ions. Perennial species take longer to establ ish but have longer survivalrates. These plants have a h igh protein content , increased palatabi l i ty and digest ib i l i ty .

Annual/Perennial Blends: These blends provide the best of both worlds in one food plot .Some plants grow large amounts of b iomass quickly , and others provide consistentgrowth over several years.

Clover: Annual c lovers produce high y ie lds of easi ly d igest ib le forage.Clover is relat ively easy to establ ish, readi ly avai lable , affordable , andthere are a variety of species to handle most any c l imate or soi l type. In addit ion toprovid ing a tasty meal and energy source for deer, corn makes outstanding bedding and thermal cover for deer i f left unharvested.

Sunn Hemp: A rapid establ ishing warm season legume that produces large amounts of b iomass. Deer prefer to forage on the leaves whi leother wi ld l i fe species such as turkey and quai l take shelter in Sunn Hemp’s natural cover/canopy.
