Setting Planting Rate

There are four to six steps to obtaining the desired num-ber of seeds per acre, some of which apply only toground-drive planters, certain meter types, and particularrow unit configurations:

1. Know the characteristics of the seedConsult your seed supplier’s reference documents.

2. Install the correct seed meters and wheelsConsult your Great Plains dealer and see “SeedMeter Setup and Adjustment” in the Operator’sManual.

3. Adjust Finger Pickup meters for the seedThis only applies to finger pickup meters.See “Finger Meter Adjustments” on page 30.

4. Sprocket index for staggered twin-rowOn twin-row planters, with certain crops, get maxi-mum benefit with precise seed spacing betweenadjacent rows. See “Indexing Fine Adjustment” onpage 47.

5. Set meter rateFor hydraulic meter drive, this is done via the seedmonitor. Once data about your planter is entered, you select the seed rate directly. Consult the manualfor the seed monitor.

For ground drive meters, two sprocket sets are con-figured at each contact wheel:a. rangeb. transmission

See “Ground Drive Meter Rate” on page 3.

6. Check planting rateSee “Checking Planting Rate” on page 5.

Setting Fertilizer Rate

Planters equipped fertilizer systems have one of twotypes of fertilizer pump. Each has its own rate configura-tion.

If you have pumps with their own ground-drive wheels, see “Ground Drive Fertilizer Rate” on page 50.

If you have pumps driven by the meter transfer shafts, see “Shaft Drive Fertilizer Rate” on page 57.

Rates are primarily controlled by the tank pump, but canonly be consistently obtained when using the correct sizeorifices in the manifolds. See “Fertilizer Rate” onpage 49 for orifice information.

Refer to the planter Operator’s manual for details onpump operations.

Setting Planting Rate

Hydraulic Drive Meter RateHydraulic drive meter rate is set directly on the seedmonitor in the tractor. Consult the monitor manual fordetailed instructions, which may vary over time withfirmware updates to the monitor system.

You will need to enter/update your planter configuration(width/row-count, single-row/twin, meter type, wheelcell count, etc.). Once entered, you can specify thedesired population directly in seeds per acre.

Although the sprocket information in the Seed RateCharts of this manual does not apply to hydraulic drive, the recommended planting speed (in mph) does apply.

Note: For most consistent results, and least wear on themeters, check the seed rate chart for the crop ormeter type/seed wheel, and do not exceed therecommended ground speed.

Ground Drive Meter RateSystem CheckBefore setting the planting rate, rotate the contactwheel. Check that seed meters, seed tubes, and drivesare working properly and free from foreign material.

Check that tire pressure is set according to the “Specifi-cations and Capacities” in your Operator’s manual.

Drive Speed Range SprocketsSelect the correct drive speed range sprockets for yourseed from the “Seed Rate Charts,” starting on page 29.

Refer to Figure 2

Loosen idler and remove chain . Remove retainingpins from Driving and Driven shafts and installspeed range sprockets as necessary.

Note: Make sure the correct sprockets have been in-stalled in the DRIVING and DRIVEN locations asshown.

Reroute chain over sprockets and idlers as shown.Move idler into chain so chain has 1⁄4in slack in its long-est span. Tighten idler and install lynch pins.

Checking Planting RateAlthough your seed monitor will report useful full passresults, cautious practice includes manually checking theseed rate early in the first pass.

The seed charts are based on cleaned and sized seed.Extreme seed variations, foreign material and tire pres-sure can materially affect planting rate.

Checking the rate also provides a double-check on yourpopulation calculations and drive configuration.

The procedure is different for singulated and volumetricseeding.

Checking Singulated Rate1. Using the table at right, determine the length and

number of rows to check. For twin-row operation, apair of row units counts as one row.

2. Adjust the planting depth to shallow on that numberof rows units. Using center and wing-end row unitsfor measurement provides a more accurate assess-ment of overall planter performance. Pick centerunits outside wheel tracks.

3. Use bungees or wire to tie-up the press wheelassembly on the tested row units, so that the seed isnot covered. Tie up both in a pair for twin-row.

4. Operate the planter for the distance in the table, plusa few feet for the press wheels to clear the end of thesample distance.

5. Count the number of seeds in the test rows.

6. Multiply the total number of seeds counted by 200 ifmeasuring for 1⁄200 acre, or by 1000 if measuring for1⁄1000 acre. This is the plant population in seeds peracre.

7. If the populated is substantially different thanexpected, check tire inflation, and on a ground-driveplanter, double-check the sprocket configuration.See “Troubleshooting” in Operator’s Manual.

Seed Rate Check Examples

Example 1: Single Row

If you have a 10in row spacing planter, according to thechart, three rows must be counted. Measure 17ft 5in andcount the number of seeds in three rows. If the numberis, for example, 180, multiply 180 by 1,000.

180 X 1,000 = 180,000 seeds per acre.

Example 2: Twin Row

If you have a Twin Row 30in spacing planter, accordingto the chart, both rows of the twin row must be counted.Measure 87ft 1in and count the number of seeds in theparallel row. If the number is, for example, 170, multiplyby 200.

170 x 200 = 34,000 seeds per acre

NOTE: Count Twin Row as one row.

Seed Rate Check Sample Size

Note: Use 1/200 acre for populations less than 100,000seeds/acre. Use 1/1,000 acre for populationsabove 100,000 seeds/acre.

Singulating Meter Planting

Singulating meter planting rate is determined by:

• crop and seed variant

• meter wheel selection, and

• meter drive configuration

There are no other adjustments.

Reading a Singulated Rate Chart1. Consult the chart for your:

crop,meter wheel/cell count, androw spacing.

See “Seed Lubricants” on page 60 for seed lubricant infor-mation.

2. Find the columns for your row spacing.

3. Find the desired seed population range (or seedspacing).

4. Note the maximum ground speed for that popula-tion.

With hydraulic meter drive, enter the population andwheel cell count in the seed monitor. With ground drive, configure the sprockets.

Ground Drive5. The Range sprockets are at the top of the columns

for the row spacing.

6. The Transmission sprockets are in the table rows, found to the left of the Population.

Finger Meter Planting

The basic seed rate for finger meters is determined bythe meter finger count (6 or 12), and the drive setup.

Finger meters have two additional adjustments for opti-mum results:

1. Meter brush (see page 30)

2. Twin row indexing (see page 44)

Recommended speed is 41⁄2 to 5 miles per hour.

Excess speeds are known to deteriorate seed spacingcontrol and depth control.

Reading a Finger Meter Rate ChartHydraulic or Ground Drive1. Consult the chart for your:

row spacing,meter type (finger count).

Some charts have two Ranges (low and high).

2. Find the desired seed population or seed spacing.

3. Note the range of meter rpms suitable for that popu-lation.

The shaded rpms are the recommended rpms for most consis-tent results with flat kernel corn.

For round kernel corn, use either shaded or unshaded values.

Blank table cells represent rates/speeds that are not recom-mended regardless of seed type.

With hydraulic meter drive, enter the population in theseed monitor.

With ground drive, configure the sprockets.

Ground Drive4. Each chart page shows the Range sprockets at the

upper left.

5. The Transmission sprockets are in the table, foundto the left of the Population.

6. Use the recommended driving speed if possible.

Finger Meter Adjustments

Finger Meter Brush AdjustmentThe finger pick up meter has an adjustable brush.

The brush reduces or eliminates “doubles” (deliveringtwo seeds per finger), but if set too aggressively cancause “skips” (delivering no seed on some fingers). Asneeded, adjust for minimal doubles and skips.

Note: These instructions describe the current finger pick-up meter shipped with new Great Plains planters, which has an integrated adjustment lever for thebrush. If you have added pre-existing finger metersafter purchase, there is some chance that you mayhave previous model meters, adjusted by screw-driver rather than lever. If so, rely on counting de-tents to determine the setting. Not all have 9detents.

Refer to Figure 31

The adjustable brush provides additional flexibility toaccommodate a wide range of seed sizes. Use leverto gently rotate the brush into position.

The settings range from 1 to 5 with detents at each halfstep, for a total of 9 detents. The factory default setting is21⁄2. Although the numbers are molded into the meterhousing, only “1” and “5” may be visible. To ensure con-sistency, rotate the lever fully counter-clockwise (1),and count detents as you advance it to the desired set-ting.

Use the general guidelines in the table below to adjustthe brush position to your seed size and shape. Thenumbers listed correspond to the numbers printed on theouter housing of your meter.

If there is a decal on your meter, its units are in poundsper 80,000 seed bag. The table below includes seedsper pound.

Finger Meter InsertsRefer to Figure 32

The backing plate is equipped with an “A” insert . Intests, this insert provides the best performance in mostseed sizes. However, there are two alternative insertsthat can be used. Before changing to a different insert, please consult with a Great Plains service representa-tive for a recommendation.

The identification of the insert type is molded into theback of the insert.

Be cautious in using seed treatments, additives, and otherchemicals when possible. They can cause meter performanceproblems and premature wear to meter parts. See “SeedLubricants” on page 60.

Always store meters in a dry, secure place, with brush inbetween two meter fingers. Moisture, temperature, nest-build-ing insects and rodents can create problems.

Always pay attention to your seed monitor and operatingmanual. Monitor the amount of seed you are planting com-pared to your expectations. Always investigate abnormalities!

Sprocket Indexing (Stagger)

This chapter applies to both ground and hydraulic drive, but only with finger meters.

If you are planting:• finger-metered,• twin-row crops,• at seed interval spacings above 61⁄2 inches, you can synchronize each pair of adjacent meters in atwin row so that you achieve the maximum seed-to-seed spacing between the units of the pair.

If you are planting any of:- single-row,- or with singulating meters,- or a volumetric crop,- or twin row with seed spacings below 61⁄2in,this section of the manual, and the sprocket indexingcharts, do not apply to your operations.

If the initial indexing does not provide equal spacing, see “Indexing Fine Adjustment” on page 47.

Refer to Figure 33

1. Find the Indexing Chart for your row spacing, meterfinger count and desired seed population. Note the“Rear Meter Sprocket Tooth #” value in the farright column.

2. Remove both meters of a row unit pair. Note thattooth 1 and many of the other teeth on the drivensprockets , are stamped with a tooth number.

On front row unit:

3. Relax idlers on front meter drive by lifting thespring off the rear post .

4. Lift chain off driven sprocket , and rotate sprocketso that tooth 1 is as close as possible to straight up(top dead center).

5. Re-engage chain and idlers, making sure chain istaut at top, and that sprocket tooth 1 has not shiftedoff TDC.

On rear row unit:

6. Relax idlers on rear meter drive by lifting thespring off the rear post .

7. Lift chain off driven sprocket , and rotate sprocketso that the tooth number called for in the chart is atTDC (or is the same as the front row sprocket).

8. Re-engage chain and idlers, making sure chain istaut at top, and that the designated sprocket toothhas not shifted off TDC.

9. Re-install meters. No particular wheel orientation isrequired during meter installation. The meterengagement is symmetrical, and the results identi-cal no matter how the coupler captures the metershaft.

Sprocket Indexing Charts1. For: your 6- or 12-finger meter, and

your twin row spacing (30in on this page)find your seed rate in the Population column, or yourseed spacing in the Seed Spacing column. Seedspacing is seed-to-seed within a single row of a twinrow pair.

2. At the front/forward row unit of a pair, set the driven(final) sprocket of the meter drive so that toothstamped #1 is straight up (TDC, 12:00 position).

3. At the rear/trailing row unit of the pair, set the drivensprocket so that the tooth number at “Rear Meter” isin the straight up 12:00 position.

These are NOT seed rate or seed spacing charts. These arecharts for staggering seed spacing between the rows of a twinrow.

Note: For adjusting spacing between rows of the pair, see “Indexing Fine Adjustment” on page 47.

Verify the 12:00 sprocket tooth position with the top length ofchain taut.

Indexing Fine AdjustmentIf, after indexing, twin-row side-to-side seed stagger issubstantially imbalanced, it is possible to make smalladjustments that may correct it.

The procedure is different for 6- and 12-finger meters.

If an adjustment is made, test it on one row pair beforeadjusting the entire planter.

Before making any Indexing Adjustments:

• Check actual planted seed spacing. Seed Spacing isfound by measuring the distance between 25 correctlyplanted seeds in one row and dividing by 24. (A visibleskip or double is counted as one seed.)

• Make sure current rear sprocket index numbermatches the number in the indexing chart for actualseed spacing being planted.

6-Finger Meter Stagger Adjustment(any tire)

Find your current indexing value row in the charts.

In the Indexing Chart, each (sprocket tooth) numberdirectly above or below the current rear meter sprocketsetting, in the right most column, represents a smallmovement of the rear row seed relative to the front rowseed.

Changing rear your sprocket to the next number up inthe chart retards, moving each rear row seed back asmall amount.

Changing rear sprocket to the next number down in thechart advances, moving each rear row seed ahead asmall amount.

Example 1: The 6 Finger (Twin Row 30in) planting popu-lation is 29900 or 14in seed spacing. The chart settingfor the rear sprocket is (15). Each rear row seed shouldfall 7in behind the front row seed.

If each rear row seed measures only 6in behind the frontrow seed, reset the rear meter sprocket to the next num-ber up in the chart (12). This will move the rear seedsback to make the stagger closer to 7in.

Example 2: The 6 Finger (Twin Row 30in) planting popu-lation is 29900 or 14in seed spacing. The chart settingfor the rear sprocket is (15). Each rear row seed shouldfall 7in behind front row seed.

If each rear row seed measures 8in behind the front rowseed, reset the rear meter sprocket to the next numberdown in the chart (18). This will move the rear seedsahead to make the stagger closer to 7in.

12-Finger Meter Stagger Adjustment(any tire)

Before making any Indexing Adjustments, check actualplanted seed spacing. Seed Spacing is found by mea-suring the distance between 25 correctly planted seedsin one row and dividing by 24. (A visible skip or doubleshould be counted as one seed.) Make sure current rearsprocket index number matches the number in theindexing chart for actual seed spacing being planted.

Find your current indexing value row in the charts.

In the Indexing Charts, each (sprocket tooth) numberdirectly above or below the current rear meter sprocketsetting, in the right most column, represents a smallmovement of the rear row seed relative to the front rowseed.

Changing rear your sprocket to the next number down inthe chart retards, moving each rear row seed back asmall amount.

Changing rear sprocket to the next number up in thechart advances, moving each rear row seed ahead asmall amount.

Example 1: The 12 Finger (Twin Row 30in) planting pop-ulation is 34800 or 12in seed spacing. The chart settingfor the rear sprocket is (3). Each rear row seed should fall6in behind the front row seed.

If each rear row seed measures 7in behind the front rowseed, reset the rear meter sprocket to the next numberup in the chart (11). This will move the rear seeds aheadand make the stagger closer to 6in.

Example 2: The 12 Finger (Twin Row 30in) planting pop-ulation is 34800 or 12in seed spacing. The chart settingfor the rear sprocket is (3). Each rear row seed should fall6in behind the front row seed.

If each rear row seed measures 5in behind the front rowseed, reset the rear meter sprocket to the next numberdown in the chart (14). This will move the rear seedsback to make the stagger closer to 6in.

Fertilizer Rate

The YP1225 or YP1625 planter offers a fertilizer mani-fold, and may include a pair of ground-driven pumps ora single pump driven by the meter transfer shaft. Tanksare located on the seed cart.

Fertilizer rate is independent of seed rate. Basic fertil-izer rates are set by the pump systems. Detailed pumpoperations are described in the planter Operator’sManual.

The system includes orifice plates at each row unitdrop line. The system also includes a pressure reliefvalve and strainer, which can affect flow rate, and needto be considered when setting rates.

Adjust the relief valve(s) per the Operator’s Manual.

Orifice Plate SelectionRefer to Figure 36

Orifice plates at each drop line nozzle provide back-pressure that balances flow in the manifold, assuringthat each row obtains the same flow rate. Plates areprovided with the system in three sizes. Additionalsizes are available.

Plates are initially selected and installed based on theproposed flow rates. Due to various factors, includingmaterial viscosity and ambient temperature, actualfield flow rate may vary from the charts. It is importantto monitor actual material consumption rates, and itmay be necessary to change orifice size, and adjustpump settings, to obtain the desired field rate.

In general, the orifice needs to be small enough tocreate a minimum pressure in the manifold but largeenough to prevent the manifold pressure from exceed-ing the maximum:15psi min., 15-40 optimal, 65 psi max.

Wear protective gloves when changing orifice plates.

To reduce orifice plugging and pump wear, use thelargest orifice practical for your fertilizer applicationrate.

Orifice size is only used to create 15-65 PSI back pressure toprovide even flow between rows. Set application rate in gal-lons per acre using pump drive chart.

Ground Drive Fertilizer RateOn new and upgraded planters, the pump is drivenby a ground contact wheel , and fertilizer rate is inde-pendent of seed rate. Fertilizer rate is set by sprocketson the ground drive assembly.

Refer to Figure 37

1. Check plumbing setup. See “Setting Relief Valve”on page 59.

2. Determine sprocket pair required from tables on fol-lowing pages. If this pair is already installed on driv-ing/driven shafts, no further adjustments arerequired. Otherwise, to change sprockets, continuewith step 3.

3. Remove knob and guard . Loosen idler , andremove chain from Upper (driven) pump shaftand Lower (driving) shaft .

4. Select the new driven sprocket from the storageshafts , . Remove the linch pin at shaft , andexchange sprockets. Store the previous sprocketon a storage shaft.

5. Select the new driving sprocket from the storageshafts , . Remove the linch pin at shaft , andexchange sprockets. Store the previous sprocket ona storage shaft.

6. Remount the chain , making sure open end of clipat removable link faces away from direction ofchain travel. Re-engage idler , tightening so thatthe longest span of the chain has 1⁄4in of slack.

Shaft Drive Fertilizer RateApplies only to:YP1125 s/n A1064K- and YP1625 s/n A1032B-

On older planters, the pump is driven by the same wingdrive shaft as the seed meters, and fertilizer rate isaffected by seed rate sprocket changes. When fertilizerrate needs changing, or seed rate has changed, sprock-ets at the pump need to be changed to set or compen-sate.

Shaft Drive Type 1Refer to Figure 38

Note: Drive Type 1 uses one 17 or 23 tooth sprocket atthe pump and changes sprockets on the driving(clutch) shaft to adjust rate.

Setting Relief ValveRefer to Figure 40

A relief valve is mounted directly above the pump to pro-tect the manifold and pump from excessive pressure.Any product that dumps over the relief valve will dis-charge from the dump line .

To set relief valve:

1. Unlock plastic jam nut from relief valve knob .

2. Unscrew knob clockwise until it loses contact withinternal spring.

3. Screw knob counterclockwise two turns. Start at thissetting.

4. Observe manifold gauge . Watch for relief valvedischarge while operating in the field.

5. If valve is dumping product and gauge reads under65 psi, stop tractor and, looking down, turn knobclockwise 1⁄4 turn. Continue operating at normal fieldspeed. Repeat this step as needed until no productis discharged from relief valve.

6. If pressure gauge reads above 65 psi, change to alarger orifice. Go to step 2. Repeat steps.

StrainerRefer to Figure 41

A Banjo brand strainer is supplied with the ground drivefertilizer pump. It is plumbed before the Hypro pump. The standard 80 mesh screen should be suitable formost applications. Other screen sizes are available fromBanjo Corporation.

Wear protective gloves when changing screens.

If changing screen sizes, keep in mind the following.

• A smaller mesh (100) will keep very small manifoldorifice plates from plugging so often. However, thescreen will have to be cleaned more often.

• A larger mesh (50) or (30) will pass more material butshould only be considered when using large manifoldorifice plates.

• A plugged or partially plugged screen will starve thepump resulting in a reduced application rate.

• Mesh sizes: (Smallest) 100, 80, 50, 30 (Largest)

Seed Lubricants

Singulator Plus Meters (all seeds)

Ezee Glide Plus Talc-Graphite Mix

821-069C bucket, 5 gallon (19 liter)

Ezee Glide Plus LubricantTo maximize performance of Great Plains metering sys-tems, it is imperative to use only “Ezee Glide Plus” lubri-cant. “Ezee Glide Plus” Talc-Graphite lubricant ismandatory for all seeds, especially treated or inoculatedseed. Thorough mixing of seed and added lubricantis required.

Recommended usage:

For clean seeds other than milo and cotton sprinkleone cup of Ezee Glide Plus Talc per 4 bushels or units(170 ml per 100 liters) of seed.

For milo and cotton double the application toone cup (or more) per 2 bu or units (335 ml per 100liters) of seed.

Adjust this rate as necessary so all seeds becomecoated while avoiding an accumulation of lubricant inthe bottom of the hopper.

For seed with excessive treatment, or for humid plantingenvironments, increase the rate as needed for smoothmeter operation.

Irritation and Chronic Exposure Hazard:Wear gloves. DO NOT use hands or any part of your body tomix seed lubricant. Wear a respirator when transferring andmixing. Avoid breathing lubricant dust. Not an acute hazard.May cause mechanical eye or skin irritation in high concen-trations. As with all mineral spills, minimize dusting duringclean-up. Prolonged inhalation may cause lung injury. Prod-uct can become slippery when wet.

Finger Pickup Meters

EZ-Slide Graphite Powder

821-042C bottle, 1 pound (450 grams)821-060C jug, 5 pound (2.3 kg)

For Finger Pick Up Meters OnlyUse only approved Graphite Powder available fromGreat Plains Mfg. Inc. or Precision Planting to ensureproper lubrication of finger pickup corn seed meters.

Recommended usage:

For finger pickup meters, add one tablespoon (15 ml) ofgraphite for each unit of seed corn (80,000 kernels).

In high humidity conditions, or seeds with heavy seedtreatments, increase the application to two tbsp (30ml).

If delivery of seed from the hopper to the finger meter isan issue, add “Ezee Glide Plus” talc and graphite blendat a rate of one cup (237ml) per 4 units of seed. Adjustuntil issue is resolved.
