Your mind is your most powerful tool – and how you use it is up to you.

Maybe you’re already confidently walking on a clear educational path. Or maybe you’re still searching for a clearer picture? Step into a new country and onto your new campus and let your senses take it all in. This is where learning happens, ideas flourish and potential is unleashed.

ENGINEERING | NEPALJamie Cassels Undergraduate Research Award recipients 2012-2013

After considering several American universities for their post-secondary studies in mechanical engineering, fraternal twins Pranay and Pranav Shrestha chose the University of Victoria for the quality of its engineering program, affordability, safe community, the opportunity to take part in UVic’s renowned co-operative education program as well as participate in undergraduate research with top professors.

The Shresthas both credit their success to hard work, participation in research and co-op and their close relationships with professors. “My professor is a mentor to me,” says Pranay. “He’s never short of helpful advice, tells me why not just how, is very kind and takes a real, honest interest in me as a student, and more importantly, as a person.”

“We chose Canada for our studies because the universities here are recognized worldwide. The value of a Canadian degree can’t be compared.”

• Greater Victoria population – approximately 360,000

• The second sunniest city in British Columbia, with an average high summer temperature of 22°C and an average high winter temperature of 6.9°C

FACULtIESFaculties are groups of thematically-related academic departments or schools. UVic is home to ten faculties and two divisions.

DEPARtMENtS & SChOOLSDepartments and schools are units made up of instructors, staff and students whose work is devoted to a specific academic field, like the School of Child and Youth Care, the Department of Biochemistry, and the Department of Political Science.

yOUR DEGREEYour degree is the academic credential awarded once you have completed a particular program. Most undergraduate students at UVic will receive a Bachelors degree on graduation (or a Juris Doctor if you’re studying law).

PROGRAMSPrograms are collections of courses organized as either a major and/or a minor and fulfill degree requirements within a particular department or school.

z Major: Your area of specialization within a degree program (e.g. you may be working towards a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Pacific and Asian studies). In some cases you may be able to combine programs – a combined major in music and computer science, for example.

z Minor: A subject of study not sufficient for a degree on its own, which can compliment your major and will be included on your final diploma (e.g. a major in geography with a minor in coastal studies)

z Co-op: Most programs allow you to incorporate work experience as part of your degree. See page 6 for more information.

COURSESJust like high school, courses are classes of study with a specific topic focus. Most courses at UVic count for 1.5 units and you will need 60 units of required and elective courses to graduate from UVic.

z Required courses: These are the courses that are necessary to meet the requirements of your major, and are directed by whichever program you are in. The UVic Calendar lists all the courses required for your degree.

z Electives: Most majors provide the flexibility to take a number of courses outside your program area. This is your chance to explore subjects of interest – from the science of Batman to the cultural history of vampires – that aren’t necessarily required for your degree.

PLAN yOUR DEGREEReview the list below and visit www.uvic.ca/academic to further explore the faculties, schools and programs at UVic. Once you’ve narrowed down your options, check the calendar at www.uvic.ca/calendar for a complete list of the courses you will need for each program.

OUR PROGRAMS

You must participate in the co-operative education program as part of this degree. Other degree programs (not marked with a triangle) offer professional work experience through optional paid co-operative education work terms or mandatory practica.

z Combined programs: Looking to combine two areas of study into one major program? UVic offers combined majors like Music & Computer Science, Physical Geography & Earth and Ocean Sciences and Biology & Psychology so you can tailor your degree to your interests. To see what combined programs we offer, check out www.uvic.ca/calendar

You will be required to complete university level pre-requisite courses or hold an undergraduate degree to be admissible to this program. Contact your recruiter at [email protected] for more information.

LEARNING OUtSIDE thE CLASSROOMAt UVic, learning happens everywhere, not just inside the four walls of a classroom. As a student you’ll graduate with authentic experience and a good sense of how things work in the real world. Whether your learning takes place at a local Victoria beach, on exchange in Australia or on-the-job in a New York City co-op position your UVic options will be a great complement to your on-campus academics.

CO-OPERAtIvE EDUCAtIONAs a co-op student you’ll alternate terms in school with terms in a job specifically related to your program. Plus – you’ll earn money doing it. On average, co-op students earn more than $2,700 (CAD) per month, which certainly is useful when financing your education.

In addition, you’ll have the choice to work locally, nationally or overseas with top employers, including:

z Microsoft

z BMW

z Airbus France

z Government of British Columbia

z Hewlett-Packard

z Schneider Electric

z Canada-Hawaii-France Telescope Project

z Parks Canada

z United Nations

z Environmental Women in Action for Development (EWAD)

Co-op is a great way to “test drive” the careers you’re interested in, before you graduate. These positions are also helpful for immigration or graduate program applications.

SAMPLE CO-OP SChEDULEA sample co-op schedule might look something like the chart below. Start planning your co-op adventure at www.uvic.ca/coopandcareer and check out student success stories at www.youtube.com/uviccoopandcareer

PUt yOUR tALENtS tO WORKAs an international student, you can work on- or off-campus while completing your studies. The extra work experience will make you highly employable and eligible to obtain a work permit that will allow you to work in Canada for up to three years following your graduation from UVic. Go to www.cic.gc.ca for more information.

In his fourth year of microbiology and business, Barry Adum has already completed four paid co-op work terms with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Centre sequencing the DNA of plant viruses in different research labs.

“At my co-op jobs and in our labs at UVic, we’re fortunate to have the very best equipment, resources and state-of-the-art facilities,” he says. “We’re taught the latest theories based on current and relevant research – it just doesn’t get any better than that!” As a result, Barry has developed a new-found passion for research and will be studying immunology and working directly with one of his professors this fall.

“Co-op for me has been an invaluable experience. I’ve learned there is no limit to what you can do both in and out of the classroom. I now think in a different way and understand all the things I’m capable of doing – at school and into the future.”

Now in her second year of the BCom program, she’s thrilled with her choice and loves living and studying on Vancouver Island.

She chose UVic for the beautiful green scenery, clean environment, academic reputation and friendly campus. “UVic has so many great services for international students that it makes adjusting to a foreign university much easier. People are so friendly too – they want you to succeed.”

“UVic is full of opportunity. People here are accepting of everyone and value cultural diversity in a way that I’ve never experienced before. The air is clean, the culture amazing and the people are very, very special. For me, Canada was the best choice.”

Third-year political science student Andrea Felix may be a long way from her home in Mexico City, but she doesn’t have time to miss it too much. Between studying, working as a campus tour guide and getting involved in everything from the Photography Club to the Community Gardening Project, she still manages to volunteer at the Royal BC Museum and cheer on the Vikes soccer and basketball teams.

“I love UVic and all it has to offer - on campus and out in the community,” she says. “Canada has a lot of culture just waiting to be shared, and I take every opportunity I can to enjoy it.”

“As an international student it’s easy to get involved at UVic because it’s such a close-knit community. Join a club, try a new sport, or volunteer. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.”
