So what is Portman White? A simple white with two dashes of red.
A common element throughout legendary architect and AmericasMart
founder John Portman’s impressive body of work, the signature color is
frequently requested by designers and architects looking to emulate his
distinct style.
DESIGNER INSPIRATION
In July, AmericasMart asked seven top designers to draw inspiration from
Portman White to create vignettes. The spaces they created were each
completely unique interpretations.
Michelle Workman (Michelle Workman Interiors) had a patriotic vision,
incorporating red and blue to create an oasis of light color, bringing an
al fresco feel indoors. “Portman White is a soft white; it has a kind of
warmth and glow to it,” says Workman. “When I’m designing in a simplified
palette, I always use multiple shades of a single color and tons of texture to
help create depth.”

A WARM TAKE ON WHITE
![Page 12: See Touch Discover - Amazon S3 · also paired a space-age chandelier with a molecular table base, giving the space a retro-modern feel. REstyleSOURCE’s Kristin Alber (Found and](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042300/5ecb5df0a78091073f3002eb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Also taking a red, white and blue
approach–but in a completely
different direction–was
Brian Patrick Flynn (Flynnside
Out Productions). “I do a lot of
Americana and there are red
undertones in the paint, so I thought
I’d go with the juxtaposition of
an Americana palette, super
Mid-Century lines and then also
add a bit of a rustic farmhouse
Atlanta feel.”
Stan Topol (Stan Topol & Associates) looked to make a statement with his
vignette. “I wanted to do something that would inspire people to think like
Mr. Portman,” says Topol. For him, that meant understatement with style.
With clean lines and just a few bold pieces, Topol captured Portman’s
design aesthetic.
Niki Papadopoulos (Mark Williams Design Associates) was not only
inspired by the color, but by John Portman’s legendary architecture.
“I really wanted to create a tribute to Mr. Portman, whose structures have
impacted me both personally and professionally,” says Papadopoulos. She
also paired a space-age chandelier with a molecular table base, giving the
space a retro-modern feel.
REstyleSOURCE’s Kristin Alber
(Found and REstyleSOURCE) also
took inspiration from Portman’s
work. “Mr. Portman is an architect,
a visionary and an artist, so we
thought putting together a creative
workspace utilizing Portman
White would be just perfect,” she
says. “Originally we were going to
stick with all white, but decided to
showcase the shade of Portman
White by using a bold accent color
of blue for an accent wall.”
Atlanta designer Kerry Howard
(KMH Interiors) found inspiration in
the Moorish design of the Alhambra
in Spain, which has been described
as a pearl set in emeralds. “I’m
known for a pop of color,” says
Howard. “So I decided to keep it
classic, with gold undertones and
using black as an accent and, of
course, the fun little pop of color
and some fun, whimsical things that
represent my personality.”
“The mannequin is my favorite
moment,” says Michel Boyd
(SMITHBOYD Interiors) about his
feathery-light vignette. “I love a little
drama. It goes back to film. I’d just
seen this documentary about Dior
and he filled all the walls with
flowers. And I thought, let’s be
dramatic. Let’s bring a little bit of
fashion into the home.”

With a world of resources at her
disposal and clients who run the
gamut from individuals to big
corporations, celebrated designer
Erinn Valencich understands the
importance of finding exactly the
right pieces to create modern,
classic spaces. How does she do
it? Without giving away all her trade
secrets, a few of her sourcing tips
work for any designer. Her first
thought: “AmericasMart is a valuable
resource for any working designer
looking to find great design, value
and inspiration for a project,” she
says. “I shop at all the big markets
around the country, and having a
resource like AmericasMart that is
open year round is really a blessing.”
Valencich has her own style, even
when sourcing. “I typically shop
during Market for one or two
projects that I have in mind, so I’m
focused on something specific. But,
as long as the exhibitor approves, I
always take loads of photos, not only
of the item but of the vendor name
and the item tag so I can easily
reference those images months

RIGHT TIMING
Some projects allow for ordering
wholesale and waiting for items to
arrive, but others require immediacy.
That’s when it’s time to hit the
streets and see what treasures your
favorite shop keepers have curated
on the retail forefront. For retailers
looking to foster relationships with
designers, Valencich advocates
keeping a fresh mix of inventory on
hand in well-curated color palettes.
“It’s nice to come into a store and be
able to choose many items that go
together, but don’t ‘match.’”
RIGHT SERVICES
Other key components for retailers
to successfully work with designers
are offering a discount to the design
trade and stocking unique goods
that will bring them in the door. “If
I can come in and easily memo a
bunch of things, take them to my
client’s house, buy what works and
return the rest in a hassle-free and
friendly manner, then I am much
more likely to use that store as a
resource again,” she says. “I’m
happy to pay a premium on top to
the store over what I could normally
buy for those items considering
the convenience of the service
and availability.”
“I also love to shop at stores that
have fresh inventory from all over
the country or world especially
when mixed with items from real
artists or even one-of-kinds; this
makes it much more interesting to
me to come and find unique objects.
Those jewels mixed in will keep me
coming back to a particular store
over another.”
Erinn Valencich is a California-based designer known for redefining
casual elegance with a modern touch. Through her Los Angeles-
based firm, Erinn V. Design Group, she has designed for numerous
celebrities and clients around the country.
She launched her first furniture line and store, Erinn V. Maison, in
2011. This high-end designer collection is available at fine to-the-trade
showrooms. She has been published in multiple national magazines
and has appeared on many TV shows including specials for HGTV.

B.D. Jeffries Epitomizes Lifestyle Retailing
Aesthetic Experience
Lifestyle store. An esoteric retail
concept that’s simple to imagine but
difficult to define. When you step
through the doors of B.D. Jeffries in
Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood,
the theory becomes reality. It’s a
visual masterpiece—and it’s all
for sale.
HIDDEN GEMS
Debbie Weitz, who owns the store
with her husband Brad, says that
the store has come a long way since
its origins more than 20 years ago.
They still travel to find antiques in
Europe, but she relies on new items
and product lines she discovers at
AmericasMart. “My goal is always
to find that one little gem, something
no one else will have,” she says.
“You just never know what you’ll find.”
She also makes a point to visit the
designer vignettes set up during the
Market for inspiration.
What does she look for at the
Markets? Weitz has trouble putting
it into words. “It’s just a look I go
for,” she says. She describes the
store’s feel as “Nontraditional,
contemporary and rustic,” with an
emphasis on natural materials. As
for price, money is no object for
most of her customers but Weitz
tries to seek out products that hit a
wide range of price points. With B.D.
Jeffries’ broad offering of décor and
gift items, you can walk out with a
little horn bowl, a scented candle
or a cookbook for less than $30,
while a piece of furniture or a work
of art might set you back $5,000.
Because of this range, the store has
become known as a great place to
pick up unique gifts, and the staff
offers a signature gift wrapping
service that’s become instantly
recognizable in certain circles.
DIVERSE MIX
Local designers and artists are
an essential part of B.D. Jeffries’
assortment. The store often hosts
art shows, book signings or trunk
shoes with local merchants as well
as those on tour.
Old and new, local and exotic,
are mixed together in an eclectic
combination that completely works.
As example, an antique rice mill
table from India might pull together a
vignette of contemporary upholstery,
accessorized with coffee table
books and a footed glass bowl. It’s
a look that Weitz has fostered in her
own home, where a contemporary
dining table shares space with an
antique buffet.
“People don’t want all antiques in
their home,” she says. “But they
want the warmth of antiques mixed
with new items.”
CONCIERGE SERVICE
The store’s assortment is
ever-evolving, and Weitz says
they get deliveries every day, so
her staff is constantly arranging
and rearranging as pieces sell
and room is made for new items.
Her team will send photos of new
items to a carefully maintained
database of interior designers who
use B.D. Jeffries as a resource. The
store also has its own interior design
“ People don’t want all antiques in their home,” Weitz says.
“But they want the warmth of antiques mixed with new items.”
![Page 18: See Touch Discover - Amazon S3 · also paired a space-age chandelier with a molecular table base, giving the space a retro-modern feel. REstyleSOURCE’s Kristin Alber (Found and](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042300/5ecb5df0a78091073f3002eb/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

consultation service and will deliver
pieces for regular customers to try
out in their homes. The store’s bridal
registry program also has flourished
due to the one-on-one concierge
service and a completion discount.
EVOLVING BUSINESS
While Weitz has no plans to expand
her current Atlanta location or add
additional outlets beyond a smaller,
second location in Charlotte that
opened in 1998, she does have a
mission to grow business online.
The store’s website was recently
revamped and the staff ships online
orders every day. In previous years,
B.D. Jeffries had a yearly catalog,
but, as with other stores, the paper
version has been replaced by a
digital one. “Young people are used
to shopping online,” points out
Weitz. “It’s a challenge to have a
store and not have a website.”
“You have to have a mood and a
look,” says Weitz. “Customers come
in and want to buy a whole vignette.
They say, ‘I want my house to look
just like this.’” And at B.D. Jeffries,
it can, right down to the art book
on the antique coffee table and the
vintage fabric pillow on the armchair.
