Stony Valley co-owner Dan Fouts said the surface mineral lease (SML) for the gravel extraction site covers 27 ha of crown land north of Long Lake. The area is north of a previous gravel extraction site that is currently being reclaimed. It is at the border between Thorhild and Athabas- ca counties, with the majority of the site within Thorhild Coun- ty. Fouts said the per- mitting process takes a long time and start of operations is mar- ket dependent. He expects this site will begin operating in about a year. Land Consultant Dean Zarudenec later reported three members of the community and three members of county staff attended the open house. They asked about reclamation, how long the pit would operate and crushing. “Reclamation will be done to the standards laid out by the Alberta Government standards; including replacing and reclaiming all soils and subsoils and replanting trees native to the area,” said Zarudenec. The pit is permitted for 10 years. Opera- tion in the section of the pit within Thorhild County should take somewhere between three and seven years. The aggregate will be screened on site, then hauled to processing site away from the lake to be crushed in Athabasca County, close to HWY 831. This will reduce noise close to the lake. Riding the bus to school will be alittle different this fall. Studentsattending schools belonging toAspen View Public Schools (AVPS),have a number of new protocols tofollow because of the COVID-19pandemic.

“We have encouraged families toconsider driving their children toschool if possible,” said Communi-cations officer Ross Hunter.

Face masks will be mandatory onbuses for grade four to 12 studentsand encouraged for Kindergarten tograde three students. Parents or

aides assisting with child harnessesor wheelchairs are required to weargloves and a mask.

Bus drivers are required to wearpersonal protective equipment(PPE) which will include masks andmay include gloves or a face shield.Any PPE used can not interfere withthe safe operation of the school bus.

The division did not hire morebuses to try and spread out studentpassengers, but physical distancingwill be implemented where possible.Students will be assigned seats onthe buses, with siblings grouped

together. No guest ridersare permitted on any bus.

If possible, the seatimmediately behind thedriver will remain empty.Loading will be from theback of the bus to thefront of the bus, andunloading the opposite.

Bus drivers and stu-dents need to completethe COVID-19 self-screening questionnaireevery day to ensure theydo not have any symp-toms. Anyone with symp-toms can not board thebus.

Hunter said if a driveris unable to drive, everyattempt to find a replace-ment will be made.Because a spare drivermight not be available, families should be pre-pared to make alternatearrangements.

Students may not eat ordrink on the bus. Allgarbage is to be kept withthe students and disposedof at home or at school.

Because some studentspreviously riding buseswill be dropped off byparents, increased trafficat schools before and afterschool hours is anticipat-ed.

Darrell Coma, PHARMACIST, THORHILDBack in the early 1900s, only about 5% ofwomen gave birth in an actual hospital.Midwives facilitated most births at home.Obstetrics as a specialty, was in its infancyand to grow this specialty, doctors builtmaternity buildings called “lying-inhospitals” where women, near term, couldgo where they would get anesthesia ifneeded. It took a while to train enoughdoctors in the art of birthing but it wouldsoon become a popular way to have a baby.Hip replacement surgery is a godsend forthose who have painful arthritic hips. It wasback in 1925 that the first mold arthroplastymade out of glass was created. It didn’twork that well or last very long but it wasthe beginning of surgery that had becomecommonplace today. New materials arebeing discovered to make the surgery betterand longer-lasting.Did you know we have a half million sweatglands in our feet? Sweat often contributesto smelly feet. It’s important to wash anddry the feet daily. Wearing cotton socks andapplying a good moisturizing cream willhelp to reduce odors.

Letter to the editor,I do not know how to title this correspondence.

“Town Not Complying with Their Strategic Plan” or“Better Service with Less Workers”

The state of the Town’s streets and back alleys arein terrible shape today. In the past when the Townhad fewer outside workers compared to today theseworkers would every year maintain the streets byusing an air compressor to blow the debris out of thestreets cracks and potholes. Then, they would tarthese cracks and potholes and followed up by apply-ing gravel grit to the tarred cracks and applying newasphalt to the potholes in the streets and tamp thisasphalt to a hard-compressed surface. By doing thisregular maintenance to our streets in Redwater, theywere in better condition compared to their conditiontoday. Why isn’t this maintenance happening now?And because this regular maintenance is not happen-ing, our streets are in the poor condition that they aretoday.

When I ask myself, why is it the service that wereceived in the past is not happening today? Theanswer I tell myself is that this is a managementissue, which starts with the Town Manager, then theInfrastructure Manager and lastly the Town Fore-man. We are paying management staff good moneyto ensure that our Town is kept in a good condition, but this isn’t happening. Why is this? Where is theaccountability of the Town’s management?

Are all these resources of the outside workersbeing utilized to beautify the Town? I, for one, would like to see more effort on the upkeep, mainte-nance and service to our Town infrastructure ratherthan on beautifying our Town. I am far more con-cerned with the actual condition of our infrastructurethan the beautification of our Town. As one of myneigbours told me, it is the volunteers who plant thenumerous flowerpots positioned around the Town, not the Town outside workers. But we, the residents, now pay for our outside workers to water theseplants, along with a dedicated dual rear wheeledtruck which is used just for this purpose. What hap-pened to the old Ford 4X4 that was previously usedfor this job? Wasn’t that truck good enough for ourworkers to use or did the infrastructure departmentneed to spend their budget? This is just anotherexample in my opinion of money being spentunwisely.

Whatever back alleys that I have used recently arein terrible condition with numerous potholes, someof which will cause smaller cars to bottom out due tothe depth of these potholes. The Town previouslypurchased a new grader only to find that it was toobig to efficiently grade our back alleys, so they pur-chased a smaller model that could grade our backalleys. Another example of money being spentunwisely.

Where is this grader and operator and why can’t

more maintenance on the back alleys bedone? I am sure that the Town residentswould agree that more maintenance wouldbe appreciated on our back alleys.
