Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you.
As the father has sent me, so I send you.”
And when he had said this, he breathed on them
and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them,
and whose sins you retain are retained.”

Today we celebrate Pentecost Sunday. This will actually become the major
feast day for our new parish of the Holy Spirit. How appropriate that the
birthday of the Church Universal will also be a celebration of our parish. To-
day, we celebrate the birth of the Church—not a building made of bricks
and stone and glass and wood, but a people gathered by the Spirit of God
into one family, His family.
In the early church, it took over 300 years for the Christian community to gather in what we would recognize
today as church buildings. It is an historical fact that the early church gathered in secret because of persecu-
tion. They gathered in people’s homes, and even in tombs known as the catacombs. In 313, when the emper-
or, Constantine, became a Christian, Christianity became the religion of the then known world. The Roman
Empire even gave to the Christians some of their own government buildings in which to celebrate Mass. That
is why the early church architecture takes on the form of the early Roman government buildings.
But today, what we celebrate is the Spirit of God living within us. We are to be the House of the Lord. We
are to be invigorated, enlivened and inspired by His Spirit so that we might live our lives in his service.
If putting our faith into action is the mission of the Church, perhaps a better way to describe who we are, ra-
ther than church, is the Body of Christ. As St. Theresa of Avila once said, “Jesus has no body in this world
but our body. He has no hands but our hands; no feet, but our feet. We are to carry on his mission of love,
mercy and forgiveness in this world.” It will be very important for us as we gather as one new family in
Christ, one new parish, to consider what our mission statement should be. On this Pentecost Sunday, I
would encourage all of us to prayerfully consider exactly what that is. We will need to form a new Pastoral
Council and Finance Council. One of our first tasks and duties will be to consider our mission statement. It
should be a statement that is succinct and to the point, but
truly captures our mission and purpose in Christ.
If you would like to recommend someone, or even volun-
teer yourself, to serve on the Pastoral or Finance Coun-
cils, please let me know. When you recommend someone,
please add in your recommendation the qualities that this
person, or yourself, possesses and why they would be an ex-
cellent choice to serve on either the Finance or Pastoral Coun-
cil. Please have all recommendations to me by June 17. You
can put your recommendation in a sealed envelope in the par-
ish collections addressed to me or drop them off at the various
parish offices or email me at [email protected].
Please be sure to put Finance Council or Pastoral Council in
the subject line of your emailed recommendation.
Please see the schedule at the right for the new Summer
Weekday Mass Schedule which will begin tomorrow morn-
ing, June 10. This schedule was drafted to make
accommodation for staff vacations and diocesan
retreat requirements for priests.
God love you,
Fr. Mac’s Message

Trivia Answer: H) all of the above
Symbols of the Holy Spirit are myriad and in-clude all of those mentioned as possible answers and many more! Why would each of these be an appropriate symbol?
A mother is one who gives us life, nurtures us and cares for us continually. The Spirit fills us with the life of Christ, bestows on us wisdom and countless gifts for our good, loving us uncondi-tionally.
Water symbolizes the Spirit’s action in Baptism, the sacrament that fills us with the life of Christ. The Spirit is the living water welling up from its source in Christ crucified and leading us to eternal life.
Anointing is the sacramental sign of Confirma-tion. Christ, the Anointed One, pours out the Spirit on all disciples. Anointing with oil symbol-izes the strength that the Spirit brings us.
Wind and breath are signs of the mysterious ac-tion of the Spirit in our lives, unseen, yet effec-tively bringing life. Breathing is essential for life and the wind blows away all that is “trash” in our lives.
Fire symbolizes the transforming energy of the Spirit. Coming to the disciples on Pentecost in the form of tongues of fire, the Spirit transforms the hearts of those who are open to receiving. Fire burns and cleanses at the same time, so there is no impediment for God to enter our lives.
The dove returned to Noah carrying an olive branch, a sign of peace, to signify that the earth was again habitable after the Flood. When Christ emerged from the “flood” of his own baptism, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove came down up-on him. The Spirit always comes offering us the peace of Christ! Will we accept that peace this Pentecost? Will we accept it every day?
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
Each week we are featuring one of the 7 new
Catholics who were fully initiated and joined
our parish at the Easter Vigil. This week we
introduce to you Karen Musolino, a baptized
candidate from St. Vitus Parish.
Karen Musolino who was baptized as an infant
at Third Presbyterian Church in New Castle
celebrated the sacraments of Confirmation and
Eucharist in the Catholic church. Her sponsors
were Susan Priesel and Frank Musolino,
both from St. Vitus Parish. A graduate of Indi-
ana University of PA with a degree in Human
Resources, Karen’s work experience includes
banking, education, recruiting, and currently
vocational rehabilitation. Her other interests
are the beach, golfing, watching football and
dogs. Karen and her husband Frank have been
married for 35 years. She tells us: “After com-
pleting this amazing faith journey in the
RCIA, I am very excited to continue growing
spiritually and participating in the Church with
my husband.”
Come, Holy Spirit!
Pentecost Sunday Page 9 Evangelization & Music
Can we live up to these evangelists?
Our Catholic heritage is rich
in symbolism. For instance,
the first four books of the
New Testament written by
the evangelists Matthew,
Mark, Luke, and John have
symbols representing them.
St. Matthew is depicted as a
divine man, St. Mark as a
winged lion, St. Luke a
winged ox, and St. John, a
rising eagle. These symbols are taken from the Book of the Prophet Ezekiel (1:1-21) and from the Book of
Revelation (4:6-8). One of the early Church Fathers, St. Irenaeus, described these symbols in his work, Ad-
versus Haereses (Against Heresies XI), by saying:
“The first living creature was like a lion” symbolizing His effectual working, His leadership,
and royal power; “the second was like a calf,” signifying His sacrificial and sacerdotal order;
but “the third had, as it were, the face as of a man,” — an evident description of His advent as
a human being; “the fourth was like a flying eagle,” pointing out the gift of the Spirit hover-
ing with His wings over the Church. And therefore, the Gospels are in accord with these
things, among which Christ Jesus is seated.
Like the four Gospel writers, our new Holy Spirit Parish will have a symbol that will represent who we are.
When you think of the seven parishes coming together as one under the name of “Holy Spirit”, do you think
our symbol might look like St. John’s symbol? Fr. Mac is working on this and he will reveal it to us soon.
This is Pentecost Sunday and Fr. Mac says, “today, what we celebrate is the
Spirit of God living within us.” How fitting it is that our new name is to be Holy
Spirit Church! This does not officially take place until July 1st, but just think of
it—next year, this will be our feast day, our birthday!
There are many gifts that the Holy Spirit brings to us—and one of them is the gift
of music! It’s not named as one of the seven gifts of the spirit (Wisdom, Under-
standing, Reverence, Courage, Right Judgment, Knowledge , Wonder/Awe) but I
guess that it might best fit into the category of wonder and awe! Music inspires us, gives us energy, it can
calm us, and even heal us! How wonderful when we are lifting our hearts and voices together in praise to our
God!
Embrace the Holy Spirit and see where you are called to be and what you are
called to do—and when you are called to sing, then sing with fervor, and with
great joy!
God wants us to be a joyful people! Do you know the hymn which begins “My
soul is filled with joy as I sing to God, my Savior?” Carry that joy with you as
you leave church and let your light shine so that others may see. They may even
ask you what you are so happy about, and you can tell them how the Holy Spirit
has filled you and given you overwhelming joy! Isn’t that a gift worth sharing?!

Intentions Needed for Nursing Home Masses Fr. Victor J. Molka, Jr., our Parish Chaplain, celebrates Mass on a regular basis at our local nursing homes and care facilities. Intentions are welcome for these Masses, and many dates are available. This can be a special way to remember a loved one, whether they resided in a nursing home or not. Please call the parish office at 724-652-3422 to ask about a date. Checks in the amount of $10.00 (per Mass) should be made out to St. Vitus Parish, and may be dropped in the collection basket at Mass. (Please be sure to mark the envelope “Nursing Home Mass”!)
(Nursing Home Mass Schedule subject to change due to the needs of the Nursing Home or the Parish.)
All Liturgical Ministers across the Grouping are welcome to serve.
