Issue 22 Thursday 28 July, 2017

Dear Parents/Carers

What a chilly week! Another busy one as usual at Parkhill with Specialist classes starting again for Term 3 and children deeply engaged in taking ACTION in line with their inquiry-learning units. There have been donuts for a dollar, cupcakes and chocolate drives running throughout the school. Next week will see an art exhibition in our Y6 ‘Hub’ and Y2 versions of Rube Goldberg machines mesmerising the staff and students. It is all happening!

BUILDING UPDATE:

The temporary toilets are in full use now. The children have been using them since Tuesday. The builders have been investigating the damage to the girls’ toilets and on removing the linoleum have uncovered more extensive water damage than first thought. The good news is that this means we will have a full new refurbishment of these toilets. At this point, the Department will only cover the cost of the girls’ toilets, as this is where the damage is. Many of you have asked if the boys’ toilets are being refurbished at the same time – not at this point I am afraid!

It is great to see Learning Centre One taking shape! It is exciting to imagine how the school is developing and I can’t wait to see the buildings come together.

READING: Throughout 2017, we have been developing our understanding of the CAFÉ reading program. You will have heard your child talking about their reading strategies at home. The ‘menu’ opposite shows the strategies that make up the CAFÉ menu. KIDSMATTER:

We are currently working our way through Component Two of the KidsMatter Framework. This component is about Social and Emotional Learning. The website (https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/) is a fabulous resource for both schools and families. There is lots of ‘easy read’ information about the children’s social and emotional learning.

PYP LEARNER PROFILE ATTRIBUTE OF THE FORTNIGHT:

Is your child Open Minded?

I explore and appreciate different cultures and histories including my own. I consider the points of view of others. I celebrate diversity. I understand that we are all different and that’s okay. I learn from my own and others’ experiences.

REMINDERS:

Car parking:

We currently have no parking available in the school carpark due to the portable toilets. Please do not use this space to park or turn in. Our students access the playground through the carpark as this is one of their only walkways now. It is very dangerous if cars continue to turn or drive into this space. We are unable to close the gate fully as this is an access point to the school. I would really appreciate your help with this. Please ensure you are following the guideline for the drop off zone. Drive down the road with the school on your left and ‘drop and go’ in the zoned area. If you are coming up the street then please pass the school, or drive around the block to drop off – do not turn in front of the school or drop children on the wrong side of the street. This causes unnecessary congestion at peak times.

Swimming:

Term 3 is swimming term. Lessons start in week three. Please note the dates below!

Stay warm!!

Have a wonderful weekend

Chaplain's Corner I was standing on my friends ’ front porch. The light filtering out from the house felt warm and inviting, the conversation, however, was anything but. I had sought her advice. After listening to me trying to justify a particular decision I was making, she responded very bluntly explaining in no uncertain terms exactly why it was a rubbish decision. It felt like a slap in the face. But I knew straight away she was right. Whether we are talking about parenthood, business, management or relationships our decisions tend to be better if we have one or two wise heads around us that we ’ve given permission to say no to us. We all need those people in our life who can tell us when we ’re about to make an unwise choice. People who care enough to perhaps even risk a relationship to tell us when we are about to make a big mistake. In business that can save us time and money, in our personal lives it protects our relationships. As stewards of little people it can help us to be better parents when we are able to listen to a bit of loving criticism and it also means being a child ’s parent and not their friend. So, when someone we trust, that knows us well, someone who over the passage of time has shown they “have our backs ’, calls us out on our behaviour or choices we are wise when we listen. I wonder, have you worked to develop some friends or colleagues that can “say no” to you? Or maybe is there someone you know you need to do that for? Parent Opinion Survey 2017

WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent

Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is

conducted with a sample of randomly selected parents at each school.

It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents ’ perception of school

climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use

the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement

strategies.

The survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to

complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any

convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7 th August to Sunday 27 th August .

Approximately 30% of randomly selected parents will be invited to participate in this year ’s

survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous.

The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of additional languages, but please contact the school should you require any further assistance. The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September, and these

results will form part of our Annual Report.

For further information, please contact the office or visit: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/teachers/management/improvement/Pages/performsurveyparent.aspx

Year 3 String Games Incursion

Empty tin cans, sticks, stones and shells! Judy came and explained and shared how Aboriginal

children are extremely creative and resourceful. Instead of going to the shops, they make and

play with so many different toys and games from materials found in their environment. The Year

3 students then looked at and touched an amazing selection of tools and toys such as

boomerangs, spears, and even a ball made out of possum skin. We finished by learning some

games to play with string. We walked out at the end of the session, reflecting about how the

simple things in life are often the best. What a fantastic way to start our Inquiry unit about Koori

Culture. Thank you Judy for such an informative and engaging presentation.
