July 2019 Sedona United Methodist Church SUM GOOD NEWS Summerme Greengs to our SUMC Members and Friends, Matthew's gospel is the first gospel we come to in the New Testament record. Matthew was known as Levi before he was converted—He was a collector of tolls; he went around collecting taxes. But when the Lord Jesus Christ came to Matthew and when he had an encounter with the living Son of God in flesh, we read that Matthew became a collector of souls—He followed Christ and became a fisher of men, and he recorded the life of Jesus Christ as he experienced it. In chapter 1 of Matthew's gospel we find there His birth—The birth of our blessed Savior, the One who would be called Jesus, because He would save His people from their sin. In chapter 2 we see His kingship, because we read there how the wise men came from the east and they brought those rich jewels and frankincense and gold and myrrh and they placed it at the feet of the Lord Jesus Christ, and they worshipped His majesty and His dignity because of who He was. Chapter 3 brings us to His baptism where God declares “This is My beloved Son in whom I am well pleased”—And there we see the Holy Spirit descend and anoint the Lord Jesus Christ for the ministry that was ahead, a ministry that would see Him heal the sick, make blind eyes see, and deliver the captives. Then in chapter 4 we find His temptation, where He went eyeball to eyeball with the very devil himself, who tries to divert the Son of God from His eternal purpose of going to the cross, of dying for a sinful world and of redeeming a people for Himself. Which brings us to chapter 5, the chapter of His teaching and His preaching. It introduces us to the ‘Greatest Sermon’ ever preach by the ‘Greatest Preacher’ the world has ever known—Jesus. The date is probably sometime in the year of 28 AD. We learn in the 6 th chapter of Luke's Gospel that the Lord Jesus Christ spoke these great words after a night that He had spent alone with God in prayer. Mark chapter 3 tells us that after that night of prayer, Jesus goes out and chooses twelve disciples to follow Him. We read that He goes about healing many of their sickness and their diseases and after all that, on that same day, He sits down upon a mountain, as we read in verse 1 of chapter 5 of Mark, and He gives this great sermon - the Sermon on the Mount. SUM GOOD NEWS

Summertime Greetings to our SUMC Members and Friends,

Matthew's gospel is the first gospel we come to in the New Testament record. We learn in the 6th chapter of Luke's Gospel that the Lord Jesus Christ spoke these great words after a night that He had spent alone with God in prayer.

The Sermon on the Mount consists really of three sections. The first section is where Jesus speaks to us teaching of and about the citizens of the Kingdom of God. He speaks specifically and in detail of their character and their blessedness in the eyes of God. This section is known to us as “The Beatitudes”. Some describe the Beatitudes as a plan of salvation, that in order to get to Heaven you must follow these guidelines, you must obey these rules of the Lord Jesus. Others say that it is a charter for world peace, and it begs the nations of the world to heed it’s teaching for the sake of peace and tranquility. Still others say that it's not for today, that it's for the future describing a kingdom that is yet to come in which there will be an earthly reign, a millennial kingdom upon this earth where the Jesus Christ will be the ultimate Lord and King. But what about the message that the beatitudes have for us today? I want to invite you to join me on an 8 week study/sermon series (Beginning July 7th) entitled “The Master and His Message” in which we will study in depth, week by week, verse by verse this incredible work given as a gift to all the people of creation by the Preacher of all Preachers—Teacher of all Teachers. Who said summer is boring! Grace & Peace,

Pastor Fred

POST ANNUAL CONFERENCE BRIEFING TO BE HELD

JULY 7TH AT 11:30 A.M. IN THE SANCTUARY

The 35th Session of the Desert Southwest Annual Conference took place on June 13-16, 2019 at the

Mesa Convention Center with Bishop Robert T. Hoshibata officiating. During the session six clergy-

members retired, two elders were commissioned and one deacon ordained. This year’s Annual

Conference had numerous legislative items to consider, discuss, and vote on as a body. Some of the

actions enacted by the conference included a call for a special session of the Desert Southwest

Annual Conference set for Saturday, September 14, 2019, at Gold Canyon United Methodist Church

from 9:00am-5:00 pm. in order to consider all remaining legislation as well as additional items

submitted in response to the 2019 special session of the General Conference and the future of the

Desert Southwest Conference

Our District Superintendent, Nancy Cushman gave these words in her recent letter, “The Scripture

from Colossians 3:12-17 reminds us of the characteristics that fill us with the light of Christ –

“compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Be tolerant with each other and, if some-

one has a complaint against anyone, forgive each other … and over all these things put on love which

is the perfect bond of unity.” We needed this Scriptural reminder as we sought to do the business of

the Annual Conference in this contentious time. We did not always achieve this standard, but it was

evident that we were working at it. “

Join us on July 7th where we can meet as a church and discuss an overview of the items passed at

Annual Conference and the Desert Southwest’s “Way Forward”.

United States. We raised $4,423.25 for homeless youth and young adults, Disaster Response

raised $3,589.57 to resource our ERT responders and UMCOR volunteers, $3,551.75 for

We have also made and numbered 0172 pendant crosses! That’s a total of 1,107 crosses!

SUMC thanks Joe and Kathy Huff for casting the crosses and all the painters who take a lot of time to provide the cross with the wonderful colors.

June—Ellen Foncannon, Theo Thomas, Laurie Rathbun, Bob

Martin, Gale Grove, Tim Henriksen and Larry Rathbun. We are

truly blessed with some wonderful talented people. We will
