The children were all reunited with their lo- ved ones on Monday night after an inten- sive search by Evaton’s Police Task Team on Monday. Some of these kids were reported mis- sing by families while others were not. It is alleged that among these kids are those that went voluntarily to the moun- tain (Lebollong), while their parents thought they had been abducted, most of them being underaged. The most worried parent was the grandmother of a 14-year-old, Grade 9 learner from Tharabollo Secondary School in Palm Springs. “I spoke to him numerous times about going to the mountain (lebollong) and the kind of friends he mixed with. I knew they were up to something bad and sat him down. I explained that it was not part of our culture to be initiated. I tried eve- rything. I asked his uncles to speak to him and we thought he’d heard clearly,” says the granny, who was upset to see her grandchild in such an appalling condition. The young boy was in dirty clothes that stank and had been without water for about two weeks. The distraught grandmother was delighted to be reunited with her grand- son. “I thought he was dead. These children do drastic acts there and I can’t imagine the anguish I would have gone through if some- thing bad had happened to him. I’m very disappointed in him. He’s a brilliant child at school and I just don’t understand why he would do this,” adds the grandmother. Police spokesperson Tshifiwa Mitileni says four traditional surgeons aged between 17 and 27 were arrested and released on warning. Police urge parents to timeously report missing children. These children are from different areas such as Sharpeville, Palm Springs, Boiket- long and Orange Farms. SHARPEVILLE. - Chaos erupted last yearfollowing a decision by the national govern-ment to hold the March 21 celebration in So-weto. The Day is celebrated as Human RightsDay but was informally called SharpevilleShooting Day. It commemorates the killingof 69 people in Sharpeville in 1960. These

people were part of a crowd of protestorsagainst the carrying of ‘dompassses’. To reas-sure the Vaal Triangle, Sharpeville in partu-cular, Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Cultureand Recreation - Lebogang Maile - alongsideSedibeng’s District Municipal ExecutiveMayor Coucillor,Simon Mofokeng, recentlylaunched the 2013 Human Rights Month pro-gramme at the Sharpeville Hall. The month-long programme will form part of Gautengprovincial government’s campaign to com-memorate and honour heroes and heroines ofthe liberation struggle, including victims ofthe Sharpeville Massacre, and the role theyplayed in the struggle for Human Rights. Thisyear’s commemoration, mainly in Sharpevil-le, will see a number of activities take placesuch as the Sharpeville theatre production, half marathon, Imbawula storytelling throughthe media, the cleaning of graves and a choralmusic festival.MEC Lebohang Maile says, “The comme-

moration of this day is, among others, to cele-brate Human Rights for all, to honour thecountry’s fallen heroes and heroines whofought and resisted the then apartheid govern-ment’s unjust pass laws.”

BOPHELONG. - Police allegedly told a resi-dent to pay rates and services before Emfule-ni Local Municipality (ELM) could unblockthe sewarage system.

According to Emily Mofokeng, a Bophe-long resident, she had gone to the local policestation to ask for numbers of Metsi-a-Lekoa,the ELM water wing, when she was toldopenly that Bophelong residents do not payfor municipal services and it would be a was-te of time to give her the numbers.

Mofokeng had wanted to call Metsi-a-Lekoa as a manhole in her yard had beenblocked.

The sewerage water was running all overthe streets and inside Mofokeng’s yard. So-me residents said they have moved theirtoddlers to a temporary place as the smell hadbecome unbearable. Cecil Schreuder, ac tingchief director of Metsi-a-Lekoa, said he isnot aware of the problem regarding the sewe-rage system.

It might not have come to my office’s at-tention. Schreuder advises the community toreport any problem regarding municipal wa-ter services to either Ward Councillors,MMCs, Customer Cares. Warrant OfficerKinnie Steyn said, “It is a concern that theofficer allegedly responded in that manner.

“I would urge a complainant to come tothe station commander to see how best wecan help. The police do not deal with ratesand services,” said Steyn.

The return of Human Rights Day celebration to this regionby the Sedibeng District Municipality and its provincialgovernment does not excite us the ordinary members ofthe community, the celebration belongs here.

Sharpeville residents in particular have been vindicatedin that what they went out onto the streets to protest forlast year - when the celebration was taken to Soweto -has been proven right. Leaders decided to take the celebra-tion of this important part of their history away and, byso doing, totally distorted the necessary information thatis supposed to be passed from generation to generation.

What the Sedibeng District Municipality and the go-vernment should have done last week during the launchof this year’s Human Rights Programme was apologiseto the community and by so doing acknowledge that whatthey did last year was erroneous, ‘finish and klaar’.

The resistance of the then apartheid regime’s unjustpass laws started in Sharpeville, the constitution of thiscountry was signed into law in Sharpeville. Do I makesense or need I say more?

Soweto has its history, Langa has its history - the sameas other areas of the country, and these have never beentaken away from their original places. Why then did thegovernment feel that Soweto deserved to ‘shine’ in Sedi-beng’s light?

The government was compelled to bring back the cele-bration of this important day in history otherwise all hellwould have broken loose! Hence I say what they shoulddo during these celebrations is be ‘man’ enough to apolo-gise for trying to rob the community of its heritage.

While the month-long celebrations continue the go-vernment, particularly the local authorities, should notforget the mandate they were given by the communitywhen they elected them into power - that of service deli-very. They should get off their high horses and comedown to hear the needs of the ordinary people whosevotes they will be looking for in the near future.

Until there is eradication of dilapidated houses andshacks in Small Farms, until RDP houses are not soldin Tshepiso, until New Village (Lengweleng) is electrifi-ed, until a correct rates-and-taxes system is in place, anduntil there is a total difference in terms of developmentat grass roots level, to mention but a few issues - thosein power should know that there is nothing that excitesus about them and they are not doing us a favour. Finishand Klaar!

SEDIBENG. - Orlando Pirates are like a deadman walking!

Soccer experts and scribes write OrlandoPirates off when they take on the on- formKaizer Chiefs in the Absa Premier Soccer Le-ague match on Saturday.

Orlando Pirates Coach Roger De Sa is adead man walking, coming into this encoun-ter after Pirates’ recent unexpected defeat inthe Nedbank Cup.

De Sa knows that a win is the only thingthat could steer his ship back into the leaguechampionship.

More than three points are at stake! Piratesmight not be doing well for now, but comeSaturday it is going to be a new ball gamealtogether.

Like other derbies in the world this South

African derby divides the country into twoand Saturday is going to be no exception.

It would be an insult for anyone who thinksthat Chiefs will just roll over Pirates basedon their recent performance.

It has to be emphasised that form countsfor nothing when these two sides meet.

As things stand, Chiefs have the advanta-ge, although Pirates still have a game in hand.

The players that will set the scene alightinclude Reneilwe Letsholonyane, SiphiweTshabalala, Bernard Parker, LehlohonoloMajoro, Itumeleng Khune for Kaizer Chiefs.Whist Oupa Manyisa, Andile Jali, ThaboMatlaba, Senzo Meyiwa, Dain Klate and Luc-ky Lekgwathi will be carrying the hopes ofthe Buccaneers on Saturday.

A draw will be a fair score but Pirates needthese three points more than Kaizer Chiefs.

Pirates are dead men walking

Not only Pirates and Chiefs but interPSL club supporters will be on their way to theFNB Stadium this coming Saturday to witness the mother of derbies in the country whenOrlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs clash in the Absa Premier Soccer League match. Photo: Zacharia Nale.

When you trust football people, you doso at your own risk! Don’t say ShootingFrom The Hip did not warn you. At onestage Shooting From The Hip called fora change of leadership at Safa Sedibeng, especially of president Xolani Mtum-tum.God is my witness! Shooting From TheHip was told in no un certain terms thatMtumtum is a “great” leader and hats offto him.

This I was emphatically told. But howquick things can change! The

very same people who accused ShootingFrom The Hip of “rubbishing” Mtum-tum’s leadership now want him out asSafa Sedibeng President.

It’s probably safe and accurate to saythat the knives are out for Mtumtum.

Mtumtum knows perfectly well thatShooting From The Hip is not a greatfan of his leadership but because he wasvoted into power by the teams, I gavehim the benefit of doubt.

In fact, if I had voting powers Mtum-tum would not be the Safa President forone simple reason – the man’s focus isnow on the Safa national office.

For starters, the media is no friend of

anybody and we don’t write stories toplease anybody. Media are the eyesand ears of the community, thats all!Shooting From Hip’s relationship withMtumtum is not personal but all aboutfootball.

Some of the local football admini-strators question Shooting From TheHip’s relationship with Mtumtum. Re-ally!

Worse, the people who questionShooting From The Hip’s relationshipwith Mtumtum are the very same peo-ple who defended Mtumttum when thiscolumnist suggested he step down aspresident of Safa Sedibeng, because hehas taken us nowhere as far as the deve-lopment of football in this region isconcerned.

My message to those who head thesmear-campaign to get rid ofMtumtumis that they should not involve innocentpeople in their unholy company.

Gentlemen, please don’t use the me-dia to destroy people in this region.Methinks Mtumtum’s is not the onlyhead that needs to be chopped off!

There is a load of other deadwoodpeople in our local football that needsto be decapitated (figuratively spea-king) because they hide themselves be-hind other people’s mistakes.

Like I said before – as long as wevote for these bus drivers and salesmento run our football, we will go nowhe-re, to say the least.

The interesting question is: Whowill replace Mtumtum - a bus-driver ora salesman?

Not again please!

Trust, but notTrust, but nottoo much!too much!

ween local rivals Vaal Milano FC and NaleAcademy u/17s. This much-anticipated localderby is scheduled to take place at Sharpevil-le’s George Thabe Stadium on Sunday.

The final will play as a curtain–raiser to the

Safa Sedibeng Castle Regional League matchbetween Vaal Milano and United ScientistsFC. In another final, u/14s Rust-ter-Vaal SaintsFCwill be up against the “Cheese-boys” - NaleAcademy - on the same day. Speaking to Sedi-

beng Ster Sport, Eric “Fox” Moya, organiserof the tournament, says he takes the tournamentto the George Thabe Stadium because it is aperfect venue for the final. Moya says the twoteams are fromVanderbijlpark and Sharpevilleand it only makes sense to take the tournamentto the venue.

However, the only team that is from outsideis Rust-ter-Vaal Saints FC, which play againstNale Academy in the u/14 final.

The excited Moya says he is grateful for thesupport he receives from the Rust-ter-Vaalcommunity and now it’s the turn of the Sharpe-ville community to fill theGeorgeThabeStadi-um. “I know the Rust-ter-Vaal community willbe very upset to hear that the final will takeplace at theGeorge Thabe Stadium. The reasonI decided to take the final to Sharpeville is be-cause both teams - one way or the other - comefrom this side. I want them to play in front oftheir supporters, especially their parents. Forthe past two weeks they have been travellingto Rust-ter-Vaal and it’s only fair to give themhome advantage,” says Moya.Road To the Final:Under-14 quarterfinalsTrigger Stars 2-1 Vereeniging Old BoysNale Academy 1-0 Vaal MilanoRust-ter-Vaal 3-2 BenficaMagic Touch 5-4 K.
