GLOSSARY OF HONOURS TERMSNetwork: A computer network or data network is a telecommunications network that allows computers to exchange data. In computer networks, networked computing devices pass data to each other along data connections. Data is transferred in the form of packets. The connections (network links) between nodes are established using either cable media or wireless media. The best-known computer network is the Internet.

Router: A router is a networking device, commonly specialized hardware, that forwards data packets between computer networks. This creates an overlay internetwork, as a router is connected to two or more data lines from different networks.

Modem: A modem (modulator-demodulator) is a device that modulates signals to encode digital information and demodulates signals to decode the transmitted information. The goal is to produce a signal that can be transmitted easily and decoded to reproduce the original digital data. Modems can be used with any means of transmitting analog signals, from light emitting diodes to radio. A common type of modem is one that turns the digital data of a computer into modulated electrical signal for transmission over telephone lines and demodulated by another modem at the receiver side to recover the digital data.

IP: An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two principal functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing. Its role has been characterized as follows: “A name indicates what we seek. An address indicates where it is. A route indicates how to get there.”

Remote Access: Connection to a data-processing system from a remote location, for example through a virtual private network.

Port Forwarding: In computer networking, the term port forwarding or port mapping[1] identifies the combined techniques of:

- translating the address or port number of a packet to a new destination

- possibly accepting such packet(s) in a packet filter (firewall)

- forwarding the packet according to the routing table.

Wi-Fi: Is a local area wireless technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet using 2.4 GHz UHF and 5 GHz SHF radio waves. The name is a trademark name, and is a play on the audiophile term Hi-Fi.

WAN IP or Public IP: The public, external IP address that users outside of your own network see your network to be located at on the WAN. WAN IP addresses reveal nothing about internal IP address allocation on a LAN located at the WAN IP address.

Internet: A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

UPnP: A family of protocols that enables data transfer between computers, mobile devices and AV equipment. Introduced in 1999 by the UPnP Forum (www.upnp.org), UPnP provides automatic discovery of devices in an IP network (see SSDP). For example, it is widely used to discover content on a personal computer or media server and stream it over the network to a playback device such as a TV or stereo.

HOW TO EXTEND YOUR NVR CABLE LENGTHWhen extending the camera range of Cat5e cable, any managed or unmanaged ethernet switch must be placed every 90m along the cable length. A PoE switch is recommended for the camera to connect to, otherwise the customer must provide a 12vDC power supply.

DO’S AND DONT’S ON WIRING SWANN CAMERAS

Altering or modifying the camera cable/s that come with the product will void the warranty.

Test all equipment before commencing wiring and installation.

Smaller cameras: Don’t require special mounting considerations. Standard mounting considerations apply on common surfaces (e.g. wall plugs on dry wall). Using the provided mounts should be enough.

Big cameras: Consideration should be made on the weight of cameras. Most larger cameras would be mounted on external walls which should be capable of handling the weight of the camera.

SWANNLINK ‘PEER TO PEER’SwannLink Peer to Peer is a method of connecting a supported SmartPhone or computer to your DVR/NVR using the SwannLink server and a unique code. It cuts out all of the messy networking stuff that you used to have to do to get connected! No more spending time in configuring the router or modem.

The SwannLink server checks the UID you entered, confirms your DVR/NVR username and password and then connects you directly to your DVR/NVR using a secure 128-bit encrypted connection so you can watch your cameras from almost anywhere with ease.

Register the DVR by sending the UID code to the server (requires setting up the email in the system)

Type the UID code on the app or on the software and will communicate with the server

Server will locate the device that has that UID code assigned to it

HOW BEST TO SCAN THE QR CODE INTO YOUR SMARTPHONE OR TABLET APP?

It is best to use the QR code scanner feature of the app.

Be careful typing in the UID manually

- It is case sensitive

- The letter ‘S’ looks like the number ‘5’, letter ‘B’ looks like the number ‘8’.

The UID can only be used on the software and on apps. For using the web browser, use the IP address or the domain name assigned to that device.

Scan QR Code or key-in UID Number

HOW TO SET UP A NETWORK?

You can set-up a network by using different port numbers if necessary – i.e HTTP port 90; Server port 49000.

If there are 2 or more DVRs/NVRs on one network, make sure no DVRs/NVRs are using same HTTP port and Server port numbers (DVR 1- 85/9000; DVR 2 – 86/9001).

If possible, set the DVR/NVR on STATIC IP and use an IP address that is higher on the DHCP range and not used by another device.

Swann normally sets DVRs/NVRs to an IP address that ends on “.235” (192.168.1.235 or 10.0.0.235).

Some routers, like Netgear routers, have an IP Reservation feature.
