Lesson #4: Learn to change the active focus pointFor most (but not all) photography, I recommend using a single autofocus point rather than allowing the camera to choose several points. When many photographers learn to use one focus point, they often use only the center focus point. To do this, they focus on the eye of the subject or on the cor-rect place for a landscape, and then recompose the picture while holding the shutter button half-way down. After composing to the correct composition, the photographer then finishes press-ing in the shutter button. If you sit down for a minute with your camera manual and learn to change the focus point, then you will likely get a much larger percentage of your shots in focus.

Amartya SaikiaThe Photography Tips That Photographers Wish They Would’ve Learned SoonerLesson #1: Envision, plan, and then create

There is nothing–at all-wrong with looking at great photography to get creative inspiration. Spend the

time thinking and thinking of what type of photo you want to create and how you can do it. Then, get to wo rk. Almost every one of my best shots are the result of weeks of planning. Rarely did I just “happen” to find a great scene to photograph. Make each photo “your own,” whether it be a little bit different lighting or composition, make it feel personal.

Lesson #2: The histogram is NOT optionalSpending just 5 or 10 minutes to learn how to use the histogram can make a huge difference in

Q

your photography. Personally, We use the histogram most of the times that we go out and shoot. We use it when shooting a wedding to make sure that the bride’s dress is not overexposed, We use it when shooting landscapes in low light to make sure of gathering enough light, etc.

Lesson #3: Learn to wirelessly fire the flash off-cameraBy getting the flash off the camera, the lighting changes dramatically for the better. Directional light throws pleasing shadows on the subject and highlights the natural curvature of the face. The flash trigger works flawlessly. No need to change camera settings at all. Just put the trigger on the hot shoe of your camera (the hook on the top of your DSLR) and attach the flash receiver to the bottom of ANY flash. That’s all it takes. Take a picture and your flash will fire.

Lesson #5: With tripods, it’s “Buy right, buy once”Several of our Improve Photogra-phy community commented that they wish they wouldn’t have wasted their money on cheap tripods. The cheap-ies might seem like good deals, but you’ll end up buying four or five be-fore you finally break down and buy a good one that will last your lifetime.

Lesson #6: Photography is REALLY about composition and light Personally, I spent about the first few months of my photography focused on the tiny little technical details, hoping my photography would improve. I learned too late that great photography is about interesting light and strong composition. Everything else is just a cherry on top.

Lesson #7: Manual ModeThere is no need to be afraid of manual mode. Just turn it on and start playing–you’ll figure it out quick. If you understand what shutter speed, aperture, and ISO do, you’ll quickly learn how to shoot in manual. Perhaps the biggest mistake beginning photographers make when starting to shoot in manual mode is that they expect to nail the shot the first time. Manual mode is a process of trial and error. You’ll get faster and faster at judging the correct settings, but you have to accept the fact that it will take a few tries for each set up.Lesson #8: Bounce flashMost photographers buy a flash with their new camera, but most beginners just aim the flash head right at the subject and shoot. If you point the flash at the ceiling or a side wall and bounce the flash onto the model, you’ll get significantly softer and more flattering light. It’s incredibly easy to learn, but many photographers are afraid to try it for the first time.Lesson #9: Exposure CompensationI must admit that it took me a while to learn to use exposure compensation. I felt like my head was already spinning just trying to understand the aperture, so the thought of changing the exposure in aperture priority was a daunting task when I started out. Once I tried it, though, I was so glad I did! Exposure compensation is simply a way of telling the camera that the exposure it is picking is not what you want. You simply scroll the little wheel on your camera to choose a brighter (+1 or +.7 exposure compensation, for example), or a darker picture (-1 or -.7 exposure compensation). You set the exposure compensation and then the camera will choose the setting that it things is the correct exposure and then add or remove a little brightness according to what exposure compensation you choose. Lesson #10: It is NOT “cheating” to use PhotoshopI have strong feelings about the importance of using digital image editing in my photography. My photography is not news, my photography is art. Just like a painter can put whatever she wants in a painting, I feel that I can do whatever I want to my photos in Photoshop as long as I don’t lie and tell people it is a representation of the actual scene.

iPhoneAnnounced in January 2007 and released the following June, the iPhone marked Apple’s entry into the cellular phone marketplace. Described by Steve Jobs as “a wide-screen iPod with hand controls... a revolutionary mobile phone... [and] a breakthrough Internet communications device,” the iPhone was the first Apple-branded consumer device to run on OS X. Based around a touch-based user interface with a single button, the iPhone was controlled using a variety of one- and two-finger gestured.

It included a custom version of Safari that allowed full browsing of any web page, a revamped iPod interface

with CoverFlow, integrated access to YouTube and Google Maps, an iChat-like SMS text-messaging interface (iChat itself was missing from the initial release), and a standard set of cellphone apps, such as a calendar, an address book and a calculator. The iPhone was available exclu-

sively with AT&T voice/data plans, and was limited to EDGE-based network ac-cess, rather than the faster 3G wireless networking standard. This was mitigated somewhat by an integrated 802.11g WiFi chipset, which allowed for faster browsing on any available WiFi net-work.Though the iPhone officially only supported web-based applications from third-party developers, an under-ground development effort was quickly organized, and within a few months native 3rd party applications were widely available. Warantee-breaking hardware modifica-tions to “unlock” the iPhone from the AT&T network were also uncovered. The iPhone was sold in two configura-tions: a 4 GB model sold for $499, and an 8 GB model for $599. In September 2007, Apple discontinued the 4 GB model, and dropped the price of the 8 GB model to $399 (a $100 Apple Store credit was offered to angry early adopters). In February 2008, a $499 16 GB model was added. All models were dis-continued in June 2008, with the release of the iPhone 3G.

All About IPhone

S

iPhone 3GReleased in June 2008, the iPhone 3G had been widely anticipated for nearly the entire lifespan of its predecessor, the wildly successful iPhone. The iPhone 3G included two prominent features that had been distinctly absent from the original iPhone—3G networking and built-in GPS. These features came at a price, however: the iPhone 3G was slightly thicker than the iPhone, and had reduced battery life when using 3G networking. To mitigate the increased depth, the iPhone 3G featured a curved back, making it thinner on the edges. The iPhone 3G included a non-recessed headphone jack, to the joy of many iPhone customers with 3rd-party headphones.Even more anticipated than the various hardware improvements was the 2.0 version of the iPhone OS, which shipped with the iPhone 3G, and was also made available for existing iPhone users. The primary feature of iPhone OS 2.0 was the inclusion of a robust application SDK, and a distribution system which was fully integrated into iTunes. Though developers had already shipped device-resident applications for illegally unlocked (or “jail-broken”) iPhones, this was the first opportunity for developers to ship legal, Apple-sanctioned software for the iPhone. The iPhone 3G initially shipped in two models, at an aggressive price-point: the 8 GB model sold for $199, and the 16 GB model sold for $299. Both required a two-year contract with AT&T, once again the exclusive provider of the iPhone 3G in the US market. AT&T customers not eligible for a handset upgrade could purchase the models for $399 and $499, respectively, provided they extended their existing contract by two years. Both models were later made available without a contract, for $599 and $699, respectively. In June 2009, following the release of the iPhone 3GS, all models were discontinued, with the exception of the 8 GB black model, which received a price-cut to $99 ($299 for early-upgrade, $499 unsubsidized). It was finally discontinued in June 2010, after the introduction of the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4Introduced in June 2010, the iPhone 4 replaced the iPhone 3GS, and included the same Apple-designed A4 processor found in the iPad. External improvements included a slimmer, redesigned case, a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, a VGA-quality front-facing camera, and a stunning new 960x640 LED-backlit display. Apple claimed that the new display, branded the “Retina display,” was so high-resolution that at at standard reading distances, the human eye would be unable to distinguish individual pixels. Under-the-hood improvements included the afore-mentiond A4 processor, a faster graphics subsystem, improved battery life, and a 3-axis gyroscope which, when combined with the existing accelerometer, provided 6-axis motion detection. The iPhone 4 included the newly re-branded iOS 4.0, which brought a number of improvements, including multitasking and folders. In addition, the iPhone 4 included a new video calling feature, called “FaceTime,” and the capability for 720p 30 fps HD video recording and editing. The iPhone 4 was sold in two models, keeping the same price-points as the iPhone 3GS the year before: a black 16 GB model for $199, and white or black 32 GB models for $299, including a 2-year contract. Due to manufacturing and quality problems, the white iPhone did not ship until April of 2011. In October 2011 all models were replaced with a single 8 GB model (in white or black), for $99 with a 2-year contract (for AT&T or Sprint), or $549 without.

The Top 5 Cool Hidden Features In Windows 8Depending on your needs and requirements, Windows 8 is either a white elephant or a superb piece of finger-focused modern UI design. However, it remains as tweakable as previous versions of Windows, just in other waysNote that there are some tweaks below that require you to make changes to the Windows 8 registry, using Registry Editor. You’re advised to back up your registry before making changes.

Missing Aero? Try Aero Lite!

In Windows 7, Aero could be disabled to get around this (to a small extent); in Windows 8, you can switch to the hidden Aero Lite theme, which you will not find in Control Panel > Change the Theme. To activate, press Win + R and enter Resources. Open Themes > Aero and copy aerolite.msstyles to the parent folder, Themes, agreeing to the instruction to make the change as an administrator. With this done, you will need to create a configuration file.

Begin by copying aero.theme and pasting it to the desktop. Using Open with… to view the file in Notepad, go to File > Save as… and save the document as aerolite.theme. You can then make the following changes:Change line 5 to DisplayName= Aero LiteFind the [VisualStyles] section (either by scrolling or using CTRL+F) and change the path entry to Path=%ResourceDir%\Themes\Aero\Aerolite.msstyles

07

Save the file again and open Control Panel > Change the Theme or right-click the Desktop and select Personalization – the new Aero Lite option will be available! Although the visuals aren’t all that different, the Aero Lite option changes some buttons and other aspects of the OS, enabling you to sport an individual Windows 8 theme.

Revive the Start Screen AnimationWhen you first log into Windows 8, you will notice an impressive Start screen animation. Sadly, after the first run, Windows forgets about letting you see this again. This is a shame, because on Windows Phone devices, each press of the Start button instigates a similarly impressive display of tile animation. One of the key points about Metro (as Microsoft previously called the tile-based user interface) is that it should feel “alive”, but this doesn’t translate as well to Windows 8 after the first run.Fortunately, we can reinstate this, enabling fans of Windows 8 to show off this but of graphical eye candy to friends and interested admirers. Begin by pressing Win + R and enter regedit to launch the Windows 8 Registry Editor. Agree to any User Account Notifications that might be displayed.

Expand the tree to find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Grid, and with the entry opened, right-click in the right-hand pane and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, which you should name Launcher_SessionLoginAnimation_OnShow. Open this, and change the value to 1, then click OK and close Registry Editor. When you hit the Start button, the tiles will be animated.

Adjust The Number Of Rows In The Start ScreenFrom anywhere in Windows 8, press Win + R and enter regedit – this will launch the Windows 8 Registry Editor. Expand the tree to reach the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Grid and look for the entry Layout_MaximumRowCount. If it’s not there (it probably won’t be) create it by right-clicking in the right-hand pane and selecting New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.

Once created, double click the entry, set the Base to Decimal and alter the value – you can have as many as five rows. After making the change, click OK, close the registry editor and logout of Windows 8. When you log back in, the Start screen layout will have been altered, with the new rows added! If you don’t like the new look, simply delete the DWORD.

Which Apps Can You Search In?Searching in Windows 8 is initially tricky, but once you get the hang of the interface this is one of those aspects of the OS that comes naturally.

When you open the Search screen, the right-hand side of the screen displays all of the applications and areas that will be queried. After running a search, the results can be filtered by selecting from these apps. You can customize the selection of apps in this list by opening Charms (Win + C) and opening Settings > Change PC Settings > Search and clicking the switches against the displayed options. This can prove to speed up search in some cases, or at least make it more efficient, by removing potentially irrelevant search sources such as Finance or Sport, or apps that you rarely use.

Take Instant ScreenshotsMicrosoft Word has a useful screenshot tool, and Microsoft’s Snipping Tool (introduced in Windows Vista) sort of manages to redress the balance, but neither of these are universally great for screen grabs.Instead, users rely on anything from Steam to SnagIt (depending upon their requirements) to get a screen capture, safe in the knowledge that it will be automatically saved or cached.

This isn’t the case with the old Print Screen > Paste into Paint procedure that has been around since Windows 3, but it is something that has been revised for Windows 8. Taking a screen grab is now fiendishly effortless – just by using a keyboard combination (Win + Print Screen or Win + Volume Down on tablets) Windows 8 takes a screenshot of the current screen and even saves it as a PNG file in the Pictures library! - Parag Shinde

What Is The Easiest Version Of Linux To Learn? With each day that passes, more and more people are giving Linux a try. It’s free and it can hold its ground against both Windows and Mac, so why not? And maybe you want to give it a try, too–but you keep hearing about how difficult Linux is, how it’s a “geek-only” operating system, etc. Thankfully, there are certain versions of Linux that will help ease you into the process. - Parag Shinde

Quisque eu sem eros. Phasellus iaculis enim ac esteh manis.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu: The Most PopularFor those who have heard about Linux here and there but haven’t really looked into it much more than that, Ubuntu is often synonymous with Linux. And for newbies, why shouldn’t it be? Ubuntu is one of the largest, if not the largest, Linux distributions in the world. With that kind of size, Ubuntu brings to the table something that smaller distributions can’t: userbase. With so many Ubuntu users out there, if you run into a problem while using Ubuntu, it’s almost a guarantee that someone else has run into that same problem. And with the abundance of community activity, you can ask for help and receive it almost immediately.Another benefit of Ubuntu’s prevalence is that Linux developers almost have no choice but to support it. For the most part, any Linux program will run on Ubuntu. But personally, I believe Ubuntu is the easiest Linux to learn because of WUBI, the Windows Ubuntu Installer. When you using WUBI, you can install a copy of Linux straight inside Windows which can be accessed through dual booting. If you don’t like it, you can uninstall it just like any other Windows program. In other words, zero risk.

Zorin OS: The Most FamiliarZorin OS is a distribution of Linux built off of an Ubuntu foundation. But even though it has roots in Ubuntu, the developers have made some significant decisions that clearly differentiate Zorin OS. What is the driving philosophy behind Zorin OS? To offer an interface that closely resembles the Windows interface so that users from Windows will feel more comfortable.

Everything from the desktop layout to the start menu will look familiar to you. But as you grow more accustomed to the Linux environment, Zorin OS allows you to venture into different interfaces using its Look Changer feature. It also uses Nautilus Elementary over Nautilus–the Linux counterpart to Windows Explorer–because it’s tighter and cleaner.

Linux Mint: The Most User-Friendly Linux Mint is the second most popular Linux distribution, right behind Ubuntu. Interestingly enough, Linux Mint is actually built on top of Ubuntu. Though Ubuntu might have a larger audience, Linux Mint is often hailed as one of the most user-friendly distributions available.

What makes it so user-friendly? Unlike Ubuntu, which doesn’t come with many prepackaged goodies due to licensing issues, Linux Mint comes loaded with plenty of codecs, drivers, browser plugins, and

AMD/ATi cards can also output 3D, but there are no ATi branded 3D monitor/glasses packages you can buy, and the drivers provided by ATI do not support 3D natively. Ignoring the monitor side of things for a moment, if you have an ATi card then you’ll also need some third party drivers that convert the signal from your ATi into whatever format is needed by your display, and those drivers have an additional cost. The most recent iteration of ATi Radeon drivers have introduced some sort of native 3D output. You still need the

This gets asked about once a week on every questions and answers section, so I’m

writing this in the hopes that maybe it’ll clear things up for some readers. The short answers is: no, there’s a 99% chance you can’t watch 3D movies or play games in 3D on your computer. No piece of software is going to change that, and here’s why. If you have a 3DTV though, read on to find out what else you need to get it

Qall working. Please note: I’m not going to address Red/Blue pseudo-3D in this article. Any computer can display something in red/blue as this article from 2009 showed you. It’s an old technology, the quality is terrible, and this is not what is referred to as 3D in the year 2011. You can also view 3D on any monitor by just going cross-eyed if you really want.

It’s not about your graphics card.

Any modern video card is capable of outputting a signal that can used to drive a 3D display. It’s often said that you need NVidia, but that’s only because they’ve

partnered with numerous manufacturers to produce NVidia branded 3dVision

products which are relatively easy to setup

additional drivers, but they have partnered with ATi to offer a special free licence for ATi owners.

Display Device-This is the most important part of your setup, and this is the reason you can’t get 3D on any old LCD monitor. Normal LCD screens simply don’t have the capability to display 3D images using either of the more popular techniques outlined below.

Active 3D displays – the kind that have glasses which need a battery – require a monitor with a very high refresh rate to send twice as many image frames as usual. Your typical LCD display is simply too slow to display images at the speed required.

Passive 3D displays – with their lightweight glasses – require a special filter inside the monitor which polarize the light.

Lenticular 3D displays – such as the Nintendo 3DS, which don’t require glasses at all – have a special filter inside which angles the different images directly into your eyes. There are no consumer level lenticular displays currently available.

That’s why your average monitor cannot do 3D. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. - Azrael D Vrykolaka

A projection keyboard is a form of computer input device whereby the image of a virtual keyboard is projected onto a surface: when a user touches the surface covered by an image of a key, the device records the corresponding keystroke. An optical virtual keyboard was invented and patented by IBM engineers in 1992. It optically detects and analyses human hand and finger motions and interprets them as operations on a physically non-existent input device like a surface with painted or projected keys. In that way it can emulate unlimited types of manually operated input devices (such as a mouse, keyboard, and other devices). Mechanical input units can be replaced by such virtual devices, potentially optimized for a specific application and for the user’s physiology, maintaining speed, simplicity and unambiguity of manual data input.

In 2002, start-up company Canesta developed a projection keyboard using their proprietary “electronic perception technology”.The company subsequently licensed the technology to Celluon of Korea.
