by Jennifer Deitz Berry

I wasn’t sure I was going to like “SomeoneNot Really Her Mother” when I firstpicked it up.

The book jacket said this would be a storyabout an aging woman struggling with hermemories of the holocaust, that itwould be about the re-la t ionships

between three generations of women, andthat it was going to be a “keenly drawn por-trait of love, memory and loss.” I was al-ready beginning to picture it as one of thosesweet sappy stories that are just waiting tobe spun into a movie on Lifetime or theOxygen networks.

I was surprised instead to be drawn into aquiet, intelligent, dream-like novel that wasended too soon for me.

The author, Harriet Scott Chessman, is aformer professor of literature and women’sstudies at Yale University and a mother ofthree. She relocated to Palo Alto two yearsago after her husband was offered a facultyposition at Stanford. Chessman said the nov-el is, in part, a tribute to the home in Con-necticut she left behind. But the book alsoseems to pay homage to other themes in herlife — particularly literature and family.

“Someone Not Really Her Mother” isabout Hannah Pearl, a woman who lost herfamily in the Holocaust and narrowly avoid-ed being killed herself when the Nazis tookover France in World War II.

Hannah manages to put her past behindher and goes on to lead a full life, working, writing poetry and raising her daughter.

This month’s picks from Frank Sanchez, headbook buyer at Kepler’s in Menlo Park, includetwo well-written memoirs of family difficul-ties, the story of a soldier who became a monk,a book chronicling singer Johnny Cash’s fa-mous visit to Folsom prison, and more.

“Another Bullshit Night in Suck City” byNick Flynn is the story of the author’s reunionwith his father after his mother committed sui-cide. Flynn, a poet and 27 at the time the storytakes place, has a difficult time with his dad, anex-con (the book’s title is his father’s descrip-tion of his life). Powerful but painful.

“Devil in the Details: Scenes from an Ob-sessive Girlhood” by Jennifer Traig is amemoir of the author’s childhood, duringwhich she suffered from obsessive-compulsivebehavior which went undiagnosed. She alsohad a religious obsession, filling the washingmachine with her sneakers and barrettes at age12 because she thought they were contaminat-ed by pork fumes from the kitchen.

“Hell’s Gate: A Soldier’s Journey” byClaude Anshin Thomas begins with the au-thor’s time as a soldier in Vietnam in 1967-’68,followed by many difficult years dealing withpost-traumatic stress syndrome. The book cul-minates with his eventual conversion to a Zenmonk where he leads retreats with victims ofviolence.

“Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison: TheMaking of a Masterpiece,” by MichaelStreissguth, revisits Jan. 13, 1968, when thesinger visited the prison for a concert. The

concert resulted in one of the later singer’smost famous and highly regarded albums. Cashgave more than 30 prison concerts during hiscareer.

“Bloodsworth: The True Story of the FirstDeath Row Inmate Exonerated by DNA” byTim Junkin is the story of Kirk Bloodsworthwho was convicted of a rape-murder that oc-curred in 1984. Bloodsworth, who didn’t com-mit the crime, never gave up fighting for hisfreedom and was vindicated nine years later.

“Madeleine Is Sleeping” by Sarah Shun-lien Bynum is a dream-like novel and partfairy tale about a young woman who joins atraveling gypsy circus. The book goes back andforth between illusion and reality and featuresunique, unusual characters.

“The Warlord’s Son” by Dan Fespermanis a novel about Afghanistan in 2002 just whenthe United States began attacking the Taliban. The protagonist is a journalist who is beingaided by a Pakistani translator, the son of awarlord, and a bond develops between the twomen and the difficulties they go through to-gether.

“Maximum City: Bombay Lost andFound” by Suketu Mehta is a tour of thegreat city conducted by the author, one of itssons. He tells the story of the city through thepeople there, from gangsters to bar girls. Healso revisits 1992-’93, talking with Hinduswho massacred Muslims.

have taken a turn. Hannah is nowan old woman living in a nursinghome in Connecticut, sufferingfrom what appears to beAlzheimer’s. She is disorientedfrom the moment she wakes up,not sure where she is or who thestrange woman is who has ap-peared in her bedroom and isnow lifting her out of bed andhelping her to the toilet.

The good news about this bookis that it doesn’t try too hard totug at the reader’s heart-strings.Rather than wallow in the dreari-er aspects of Hannah’s existence,Chessman is able to infuse manyof the scenes with bits of humorand irony.

Take the opening line: “Morn-ing here is not like any morningsHannah Pearl has ever known.”On the one hand, it sounds likethe kind of thought an elderlywoman like Hannah might behaving as she reflects on how dif-ferent it is to be dependent on anurse for care after so manyyears of being independent, look-ing after herself and her child.

But read the same line anotherway and it can sound almost likea bad joke, since while the morn-ing may not feel sto Hannah likeanything she’s ever known, it’sobvious from the way the nurseapproaches her that the two ofthem have been going throughthe exact same morning routinefor some time now. But sinceHannah wakes up each day un-able to remember the one before, every morning is liable to feelnew and unfamiliar, and unlikeanything she’s ever known.

Some of the most wrenching

moments in the book are whenwe see Hannah’s family — espe-cially her daughter and grand-daughters — trying to connectwith Hannah despite her failingmemory. Her daughter Mirandatakes Hannah out to lunch eachweek and talks to her about thefamily, hoping it will triggersomething in her mother. Han-nah’s granddaughter sends lettersto her grandmother that never getanswered. But the story iswrenching, in a different way, forthe reader who is privy to the in-ner workings of Hannah’s mind.

In an early scene with thenurse, Hannah remembers a lineof poetry — “and, all in tears, she melted, dissolving, queen nolonger of those waters” - and hermind begins to wander as shetries to remember who wrote it,so when the nurse interrupts herthoughts to ask a question, Han-

nah says out loud, “she melted.”Of course, it sounds like non-sense, and the nurse good-na-turedly brushes the commentaside. Only the reader can seethat at the root of her mad bab-bling there is an element of rea-son.

In that way, Hannah sharessomething in common with theShakespeare characters whoselines she is often drawn back to.She’s reminiscent of characterssuch as King Lear, or even Ham-let, who seem to sink deeper intomadness as they face difficulttruths, but who, paradoxicallyachieve another kind of sanity bylooking their demons in the eye.

This element of discord givesthe book its complexity. On theone hand, the reader shares in thefrustrations of Hannah’s daughterwho is trying to pull Hannah outof her thoughts and get her to fo-cus on what’s happening in thepresent. She wants her to be ableto share in the lives of her grand-children, one who is following inher grandmother’s footsteps bylaunching a career in poetry andjournalism, and the other who ismarried and just had a baby.

But on the other hand, thereader gets the sense that theonly way Hannah will be able tomake peace with what’s hap-pened is if she delves further intoher past to dredge up these oldmemories and make sense ofthem. Whether she will be ableto do this without losing hermind completely is never clear, and it is that that keeps the readerflipping pages.

If there is a flaw in this book, itis that the story ends too quickly. We get an impression of Hannah, and of how her history has beenrefracted in the lives of herdaughter and granddaughters, butthere isn’t time spent on any ofthese women to get to know themas well as I would’ve liked to.

Nonetheless, this was a beauti-fully-written and haunting storythat is well worth the read. ■
