SICK DAYS ... According to a re-cent survey sponsored by theMenlo Park-based OfficeTeam hasfound that a majority of employeesshow up to work feeling sick.Eight-percent of the workers polledsay they come in regardless of theirhealth, while 8 percent say theynever come into the office whensick. Managers interviewed ac-knowledged that ailing employeesoften come into the office, but thepractice may be more widespreadthan thought. In a separate poll of150 senior executives — includingthose from human resources, fi-nance and marketing departments— just 21 percent of respondentssaid they thought sick employeescame into work very frequentlywhen ill. “Many employees fearthey’ll fall behind if they stay athome when they’re not feelingwell,” said Diane Domeyer , execu-tive director of OfficeTeam. “Man-agers should let employees knowthat staying away from the office isthe right thing to do when they areill.” OfficeTeam bills itself as a “lead-ing staffing service specializing inhighly skilled administrative profes-sionals.” The survey was conduct-ed by an independent researchfirm and is based on responsesfrom 594 men and women 18years of age or older and em-ployed in office environments.

If you ever tuned in to a CNN or ESPNprogram and saw a pundit or interviewsubject speaking from a Silicon Valley
locale, you might not have known that he orshe was broadcasting from downtownMountain View.
Tucked in a nondescript building on thecorner of Villa and Franklin streets, Trans-video Studios has broadcasted live to view-ers around the globe for more than 10 years, working with such news organizations asABC, Fox and CNBC.
“We have broadcasting agreements withall the major networks,” said Patrick Mc-Dermott, Transvideo’s vice president andgeneral manager.
But perhaps more important than the 400to 500 broadcasts the studio puts out eachyear are Transvideo’s wide range of corpo-
rate communications services. Highlightsinclude full in-studio and on-location videoproduction, post-production editing and du-plication, audio production, graphics, spe-cial effects and Webcasting.
The company works with clients on a va-riety of levels, from creating a complete me-dia project to simply renting out equipment.
From Transvideo’s sleek lobby, hallways
with deep purple carpet and colorful wallslead to state-of-the-art studios outfitted forall sorts of audio, video, broadcasting andWeb projects. The facilities make use of var-ious forms of technology, from analog andVHS to digital and DVD, plus other formatsused around the world.
In a dark room on the two-story building’sbottom floor sit a desk, small backdrop, hugecamera and light. Used for live one-personbroadcasts, the room is always set up and can beready to go on the air in six minutes. There isalso a huge, 60-foot by-80-foot, two-story roomfeaturing several broadcast sets with desks, bluescreens and city scene backdrops. The setscome in handy, McDermott said, when compa-nies want to make instructional videos or holdSilicon Valley-style business meetings.

“Sun [Microsystems], for ex-ample, doesn’t have meetings, ithas broadcasts,” McDermott said.
On any given day, the dozen em-ployees on site — perhaps withhelp from the company’s nearly100 contracted workers — man-age a variety of large and smallprojects, almost always in a dif-ferent phase of production.
A few newly completed projectsillustrate the diversity of servicesthe company offers. For a Volk-swagen trade show, Transvideoemployees put together a shortvideo that starts with a comicbook-style image of a womandriving a car, and then morphs intovideo footage of the same scene. The company has also created atime-lapse video documenting theconstruction of the new Palo AltoMedical Foundation building inFremont.
Additionally, the company hasmade promotional videos for SunMicrosystems and the Palo AltoMedical Foundation to use inter-nally, give to clients and — in thecase of the medical clinic — serveas part of a multi-million dollarfundraising effort. Employees cre-ated both videos in a documentarystyle, shifting from historicaldrawings and photographs to con-temporary video footage, and in-corporating interviews, to showthe role Sun plays in London’sUnderground transportation sys-tem and the history of the medicalfoundation.
McDermott said such videosprovide a clear message and cansave corporations money whenthey are used often. Furthermore,he said, most people are more aptto throw in a DVD than peruseprinted material. And if the videois made well, people will watch itout of interest, and receive thecompany’s message as a byprod-uct.
“You can’t really tell it’s a pro-motional, educational kind ofpiece,” McDermott said. ■
