“Sun [Microsystems], for ex-ample, doesn’t have meetings, ithas broadcasts,” McDermott said.

On any given day, the dozen em-ployees on site — perhaps withhelp from the company’s nearly100 contracted workers — man-age a variety of large and smallprojects, almost always in a dif-ferent phase of production.

A few newly completed projectsillustrate the diversity of servicesthe company offers. For a Volk-swagen trade show, Transvideoemployees put together a shortvideo that starts with a comicbook-style image of a womandriving a car, and then morphs intovideo footage of the same scene. The company has also created atime-lapse video documenting theconstruction of the new Palo AltoMedical Foundation building inFremont.

Additionally, the company hasmade promotional videos for SunMicrosystems and the Palo AltoMedical Foundation to use inter-nally, give to clients and — in thecase of the medical clinic — serveas part of a multi-million dollarfundraising effort. Employees cre-ated both videos in a documentarystyle, shifting from historicaldrawings and photographs to con-temporary video footage, and in-corporating interviews, to showthe role Sun plays in London’sUnderground transportation sys-tem and the history of the medicalfoundation.

McDermott said such videosprovide a clear message and cansave corporations money whenthey are used often. Furthermore,he said, most people are more aptto throw in a DVD than peruseprinted material. And if the videois made well, people will watch itout of interest, and receive thecompany’s message as a byprod-uct.

“You can’t really tell it’s a pro-motional, educational kind ofpiece,” McDermott said. ■
