When WALTER and HAROLDNIELSEN came to Carmel from Fresno in1930, they found themselves in competitionwith 10 other local grocery stores. It was justone year after the great stock market crash,probably the worst time in history to start anew business. But, possibly because they wereboth in their 20’s, they were too inexperiencedto recognize the odds and plunged doggedlyahead. Almost at once they established thepolicies which carried them through theDepression and which continue unchangedtoday: (1) Quality. If produce were in any wayinferior, they wouldn’t sell it. If meats were inany way less than No.1, you couldn’t buy it. (2)Service. They delivered, not just to your homebut to your icebox...anything from a jar of jamto a $100 order. (3) Credit. This was a veryimportant commodity in the early 30s, andthey used it to establish many long term cus-tomer relationships. Some of the accountsreached large amounts, but almost withoutexception all were collected. WALTERbecame “Mr. Inside,” stocking shelves, fillingorders, keeping the books and seeing to it thatcustomers got what they wanted when theywanted it. HAROLD became “Mr. Outside,”searching for sources of supply, selecting thebest meats and produce from Valley farms,securing the exclusive business of retirementhomes, obtaining Carmel’s first off-sale liquorlicense after Prohibition, steadily improvingthe quality of Nielsen’s fabulous wine cellar.(to be continued)

Carmel area: An anonymous callerreported seeing a trespasser at an aban-doned home on Lazarro. Deputies contactedand detained the suspect. It was later deter-mined that suspect is a tenant at thataddress.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambu-lance were dispatched to a hotel at CaminoReal and Eighth. The incident was determinedto be an alarm system activation, but there wasno fire. A heat detector activation in the base-ment utility room was caused by a broken hotwater pipe, which had been turned off prior toarrival. The alarm system was silenced andreset by management, and the alarm com-panied notified as to cause by hotel.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: The owner of a build-ing reported that someone smeared some sub-stance, possibly wax, along a storefront win-dow on Mission Street. There was no perma-nent damage sustained to the window or to anyother portion of the complex. Information only.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A female subject, age42, was reported to be driving under theinfluence of alcohol and/or drugs in thebank parking lot on San Carlos Street. Uponcontact, it was discovered that the subject’s11-year-old daughter was a passenger in thevehicle. Subject had a prior DUI convictionand was aware she was driving on a sus-pended CDL. She was arrested.

Carmel area: A male resident was arrestedfor inflicting injury on spouse.

Pebble Beach: A female suspect was arrest-ed for domestic violence.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Female residentreported that she has been receiving repeatedcalls from her ex-boyfriend during the past fewdays. Female resident feels he is threateningher.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambu-lance dispatched to San Carlos south of 10thfor a power line down. Arrived on scene to finda service drop broken from the utility pole andhanging over the southbound lane. A readingwas taken with the Hotstick, and confirmationfrom the building inspector on scene showedthe line to be de-energized. Breaker switches tothe residence were shut off. PG&E was notifiedto make repairs.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambu-lance were dispatched to Casanova Street for amale in his 70s in his bed, conscious after pass-

ing out earlier, possibly due to a synapolicepisode. Firefighters assisted with diagnostics,patient assessment, packaging and gatheringinformation. After the patient was packagedand taken to the ambulance, firefighterscleaned the soiled bathroom.

Carmel Valley: The victim checked hiscredit card balance via the Internet and found afraudulent charge for $444.96 on his accountmade to BestBuy.com.

Carmel Valley: Victim received severalannoying and harassing texts from an unknownsuspect.

Carmel Valley: Victim had $4,300 takenfrom the pocket of his jacket.

Carmel area: Resident reported that his 14-year-old daughter ran away.

Carmel area: Resident reported that his 12-year-old daughter ran away.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Resident came intothe station to report an ongoing domestic dis-pute with his live-in girlfriend. He relayed theyare beginning to argue and the relationshipneeds to end before it escalates. Neither partywants to leave the residence and both partiesare on the lease agreement. A restraining orderwas previously rescinded per the male’srequest, giving the other party legal right to beat the residence. Both parties were counseledregarding the terms of their probation andrequested both parties stay away from eachother.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A 48-year-old femalewas arrested on Mission Street for DUI.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Citizen onGuadalupe Street reported a verbal alterca-tion with a neighbor. The reporting partyattempted to prevent the neighbor from run-ning over a pair of sunglasses sitting in hisdriveway by pointing it out to him. Theneighbor responded by spewing out a stringof derogatory and personal comments to thecitizen and her husband. The citizen and herhusband were advised to avoid any furthercontact with the neighbor.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A dog owner waswalking on Scenic with a dog on a leash, whenan unleashed dog attacked the leashed dog. Thedog owners exchanged comments with eachother, and the owner with the unleashed dogleft the area. Minor injuries were found on theleashed dog.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: A citizen on Casanovareported a barking dog and concern for thedog’s welfare. The officer responded and con-tacted a caretaker for the dog. The dog was ingood health and placed inside the home until

the owners returned. Warning given for thebarking dog violation.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambu-lance dispatched to a store on Ocean Avenuebetween Dolores and Lincoln. The incident wasdetermined to be an unintentional transmissionof alarm. Disabled both the DC and AC powersupply due to no phone connection for moni-toring. Building owner disconnected phone ser-vice in error. Alarm company and AT&T bothaware of status and will repair within two days.

Carmel-by-the-Sea: Fire engine and ambu-lance dispatched to a residence at Second andLincoln for an alarm activation. It was deter-mined to be unintentional. Disabled local flowalarm bell.

Carmel area: Two Canada Court residentscalled in to complain about one another con-cerning civil issues.

Carmel area: An armed suspect entered abank and robbed it. The suspect was a whitemale adult wearing all black and carrying anunknown type semiautomatic handgun.

Carmel Valley: An anonymous personreported a large amount of traffic of juvenilesin the area. Deputies located a large party andcontacted the adult residents. The adults admit-ted they had just gotten home to find their bar-becue had gotten out of hand. The party wasshut down at the request of the residents.

Pacific Grove: Two flat-screen televisionswere taken from an inn on Lighthouse. No timeframe or suspect information.
