Section A 1 (a) Guidance

This question is worth 25 marks.

Question 1(a) requires candidates to describe and evaluate their skills development over the course of their production work, from Foundation Portfolio to Advanced Portfolio. The focus of this evaluation must be on skills development, and the question will require them to adapt this to one or two specific production practices.

• Digital Technology • Creativity (will come with another area) • Research and planning • Post-production • Using conventions from real media texts

To achieve a level 4 answer you must demonstrate:

• A clear sense of progression and of how examples have been selected • A range of articulate reflections on creative media practice. • Fluent evaluation of progress made over time. • Offer a broad range of specific, relevant and clear examples in relation to set

question. • Use of media terminology and production terms is excellent. • Complex issues have been expressed clearly and fluently using a style of

writing appropriate to the complex subject matter. • Sentences and paragraphs, consistently relevant, have been well structured,

using appropriate technical terminology. • There may be few, if any, errors of spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Final Key Points:

Timings. o You only have 30minutes to write this exam answer so the more your

practice the better.

Address the question. o If the question asks you about post production and creativity, then

make sure you address the creativity part as well!

Use P-D-Q structure. o This ensures that you are making specific, relevant points which are

related to question.

Use a range of points. o Aim to make 7-9 points on AS and A2 to enable you to demonstrate a

range of examples. Sounds like a tall order, but practice makes perfect!
