Slater Cited for Division titleRandolph coach Pat Slater was

named Buffalo Bills of the Week afterhis Cardinals won the D East Divisiontitle with a 52-0 winover previouslyundefeatedPortville.

“They had fivestarters out,” Slatersaid. “We were realconcerned aboutour kids going downthere and not show-ing up. Maybe theywouldnʼt have to play hard.”

Slater had nothing to fear. TheCardinals roared out of the gate andled 37-0 after one quarter.

“Our kids came out and playedhard,” Slater said. “We got turnoversand scored on them real fast. Thegame was over after the first quar-ter.”

Despite the 7-0 start, Slater saysthat he still doesnʼt have a handle onhow good his team is.

“I think weʼre still up in the air,” hesaid. “We have the potential to bepretty good but we have gotten a lotof breaks along the way. In ourleague, when you play teams thatare missing kids, it makes a big dif-ference.”

Slater also said that the schedulehas also worked in his teamʼs favorthis season.

“Three of the teams in our divisionare really, really young,” he said. “Istill want to know how we willrespond when the games get a lottougher. And the games are going tostart getting tougher each week, now.”

Slater says that the Division titlehas not changed the Cardinals ̓focus.

“We got step one done,” he said.“Now weʼre in the playoffs. Letʼs go.”

Despite the perceptions, Randolphdoes not have a veteran team thisyear. The Cardinals have just 4starters on defense and 2 on offensefrom last yearʼs team that won the

NYS title. However, Slater says that all his

players did benefit from the extendedseason.

“Most of these kids were on theteam,” he said. “They went alongwith us and they got to experienceeverything.”

Slater played QB and RB in highschool football at Randolph.

After graduation, he played DB forFindley College in Ohio.

Slater returned to Randolph andlanded a teaching job in 1978. Hewas named the programʼs headcoach in 1979.

Slater, who has won two NYStitles in the past five season, nowhas 196 career wins.

Only 3 other coaches in WesternNew York have won 200 games butSlater does not put much emphasison the number.

“Itʼs not about me,” he said. “Iʼmjust trying to have fun and teachkids.”

Williamsville South beat West Seneca East 36-6 lastweekend to finish the regular season with a 7-0 record. The Billies had already clinched the AA South Divisionand will enter the playoffs as the divisionʼs top seed.

The Billies open the playoffs at 7:00 pm Friday athome against Grand Island... a situation eerily similar tothe disappointing end to the 2009 season.

“This will be the fourthtime we play them in thelast 16 games,” Kurzanskisaid. “I think Grand Islandand us are starting to knoweach other very well.”

Last fall, WilliamsvilleSouth started 6-0 but lost toGrand Island in the firstround of the playoffs on aFG in the last minute.

Grand Island went on toplay in Ralph WilsonStadium for the Class Achampionship game.

Will South coach KraigKurzanski saw

Just a week earlier, theBillies had suffered theirfirst loss of the season, a 1-point defeat at Hamburg.

“It was the first time wewere in the playoffs inyears,” Kurzanski said. “It isa bit different this time.Weʼre a little bit better andwe have a year under ourbelt.”

Kurzanski says that hisplayers have stepped upthe intensity level this week.

“They all understand, you lose and you are out,” he said. “Weʼre excited aboutgetting back into the playoffs. Weʼre healthy. Weʼve lostone guy to injury all year.”

One player who has starred as the playoffs neared issenior WR Phil Stasiak.

Two weeks ago, Stasiak caught 8 passes for 164yards and 4 TDs. In last weekʼs win over West SenecaEast, he caught 4 passes for 116 yards and a TD.Stasiak also had a 48-yard touchdown called back by apenalty and now has 8 TDs this season.

Stasiak now has 34 receptions, xx among allWestern New York players, for 625 yards.

Stasiak (6-3, 190) has been overshadowed by theBillies other WR this season. Kevin OʼConnell, a 6-4,205 pound senior has led WNY in receiving most of theseason.

“Phil was double-teamed the first 3 or 4 weeks,”Kurzanski said. “That allowed Kevin OʼConnell to catch

as many balls as he did. The coverage has balancedout now and that has allowed Phil to win those one-on-one battles again.”

Kurzanski is confident that either receiver will be diffi-cult to cover one-on-one.

“They are both physical,” Kurzanski said, “and theyare both 3-year varsity players and that has made a dif-

ference. They have experi-ence and recognize cover-ages. They are both teamcaptains.”

Stasiak and OʼConnellhave starred with QB JoeLicata in football, basketballand baseball since theirsophomore year.

Stasiak was named anall-star in all three sports asthe Billies advanced to theNYS semifinals in basket-ball and the Section 6 finalsin baseball.

“They are great captainsand great competitors,”Kurzanski said. “Hopefullythis year will be the fruitionto all their hard work.”

Stasiak was selected toplay basketball and base-ball for the Western Regionteam in the Empire StateGames.

“I had to miss the lastthree tryouts for the basket-ball team,” Stasiak said.“We had made the Section6 finals in baseball. So Ididnʼt ply basketball.”

Stasiak helped theWestern baseball team win the Bronze medal.

“They have played high-level competition in a lot ofbig games the past three years,” Kurzanski said.“Hopefully that experience will serve them well for foot-ball this season.”

Stasiak says that the experience he remembers themost is losing to Grand Island in the 2009 playoffs.

“Itʼs been on my mind ever since I heard we wereplaying them again,” Stasiak said. “All week, we have toremember last year. We definitely have to focus a lotmore. The anxiety has to be there this time.”

Stasiak, who is an Honor Roll student at WilliamsvilleSouth, says that he wonʼt give up sports after he isdone playing.

“I want to major in Education or SportsManagement,” he said. “I want be a Phys Ed teacherand coach all three sports.”

The Mustangs, unherald-ed for most of the season, have fashioned a 6-1 record.

“Weʼve got a bunch ofkids who work well togeth-er,” coach Eric Valley said.“Hustle makes up for a lot ofsize and speed when youget 11 kids going hard to thewhistle.”

QB Stephen Rogenmosercompleted 10 of 15 passesfor 189 yards in the win. Healso engineered a 40-yardquick-strike TD drive to givethe Mustangs a big 21-pointlead at the break.

Medina scored a TD totake a 20-7 lead with :17 leftand then recovered theirown squib kickoff.

Rogenmoser took twoplays to score as he tosseda 40-yard TD pass on thelast play of the half.

Depew Finishes 7-0Depew finished a perfect

7-0 regular season with athrilling 19-16 win over arch-rival Lancaster last week.

Aaron Ertel tossed a 46-yard TD pass to Joe Millerfor the winning score late inthe 4th quarter.

Depew coach DanMcGrath was thrilled withthe way his Wildcats han-dled adversity this season.

“Weʼve made a lot ofprogress in terms of whatwe can do on the field,”McGrath said. “We had a lotof help from guys who cameoff the bench and filled in forinjured starters.”

McGrath says he had tojuggle his lineup before theWeek 3 games.

“Players think that once astarting unit is named, thatʼsthe way it is for the season,”McGrath said. “Itʼs a differ-ent set of kids that take thefield by Week 3. Someonegets banged up and some-one else has to step in.”

If Depew is going tomake a deep playoff runthey will need contributionsfrom senior WR Sam Sallaj,

who caught two big passeson the game-winning drive.

“Sam is a possessionreceiver,” McGrath said. “Hecan catch a ball in traffic. Hecan catch the difficult balland he runs good routes.”

Sallaj also serves as theWildcatsʼ punter and kicker.

“Our kicking game got usout of trouble a couple oftimes,” McGrath said. “Hewas able to change the fieldposition for us.”

“I feel we outplayedthem,” Salamanca coachJason Marsh said. “We heldthem to 130 yards of offensebut we turned the ball over 3times in the 4th quarter.”

Salamanca will play atWilson in the first round ofthe playoffs this weekend.

Salamanca was trouncedby Southwestern andFredonia the first two gamesof the season but reboundedto finish 4-3.

“We opened the seasonwith two really tough oppo-nents,” Marsh said, “and wedidnʼt play well in thosegames. Outr kids didnʼt havea lot of confidence but weworked hard to believe inourselves and in eachother.”

Salamanca ripped off 4straight wins to clinch aplayoff spot.

“With each win, you couldsee the confidence growing,”Marsh said. “These kidsreally worked together.”

If Salamanca is going tomake a deep playoff run, they will need steady playfrom senior QB Bret Smith.

“Heʼs not a prototypicalquarterback with size,”Marsh said. “He plays with alot of heart passion.”

Smith directs the optionoffense efficiently.

“He works extremelyhard,” Marsh said. “Heʼstough as nails. He takes alot of shots in the option butheʼs been very durable.”

Division title with a 52-0 winover previously undefeatedPortville last weekend.

“Portville had five startersout,” Slater said. “We werereal concerned about ourkids going down there andnot showing up. Maybe theywouldnʼt have to play hard.”

Slater had nothing tofear. The Cardinals roaredout of the gate quickly andled 37-0 after one quarter.

“Our kids came out andplayed hard,” Slater said.“We got turnovers andscored on them real fast. The game was over afterthe first quarter.”

Despite the 7-0 start,Slater says that he stilldoesnʼt have a handle onhow good his team is.

“I think weʼre still up inthe air,” he said. “We havethe potential to be prettygood but we have gotten alot of breaks along the way.

In our league, when youplay teams that are missingkids, it makes a big differ-ence.”

The Cardinals, defendingNYS champions in Class D,got their 19th win in a row.

It is the third-longeststreak in Western New Yorkright now.

Westfield 40-0 in the finalregular-season game lastweekend.

The Dragons will nowhost Frewsburg in the firstround of the D playoffs.

“Weʼve had a lot of youngkids stepping up this year,”coach Curt Fischer said. “Ithink we are just puttingthings together. This Fridaywill tell us where weʼre at.”

Maple Grove lost the firstgame of the season butrebounded with 6 straightwins.

“I feel like we are flyingunder the radar,” Fischersaid. “We had a rough go ofit in the beginning but wefeel very good about wherewe are right now.”

One of Fischerʼs mostveteran players is still just ajunior.

LB John Nickerson start-ed as a freshman and hasalready played 29 games inhis career.

“John is one of our mostphysical kids,” Fischer said.“He runs the ball very hard.He is unselfish. When we

had so many injuries, hewillingly moved to the offen-sive line. He did whateverthe team needed him to do.”

Nickerson, who alsostarts at MLB, is theDragons leading tackler.

“You couldnʼt ask for abetter attitude,” Fischer said.“Heʼs so fast and strong. Hemakes plays over and overagain. Heʼs just an outstand-ing player.”

St. Joeʼs trailed 18-17 in the secondquarter but exploded for 26 points andbeat OʼHara 43-26 last weekend.

St. Joeʼs led 17-0 but surrenderedthree TDs early in the second frame.Robert Davis, who rushed for 193yards, scored 2 TDs during OHaraʼsoutburst.

“We just didnʼt tackle well,” coachDennis Gilbert said. “There was a lot ofarm tackling and some overpursuit. Weleft some cutback lanes open and Davistook them. Heʼs a good back.”

St. Joeʼs has been getting big num-bers from their own back.

Nick Hall has scored 7 TDs in thelast 3 weeks. He has rushed for 569yards and has another 599 receivingyards.

“He had almost 100 yards rushingcalled back by penalties,” Gilbert said.“He has the ability to change directionon a dime and still be at full speed.”

Hall does not post eye-popping num-bers... until you look at his total offense. His 1,168 yards are among the top 5players in WNY and his 44 receptionslead all WNY players.

He has great vision and his handsare unbelievable,” Gilbert said. “There isnothing he doesnʼt do well. Heʼs a heckof a ball player.”

St. Joeʼs will play at Steubenville,Ohio this week before returning hometo play Timon.

“Weʼre coming of age,” Gilbert said.“Our kids are starting to play and prac-tice like veterans.”

Football AllianceUnlike the 2009 season, Orchard

Park is entering the playoffs withsome momentum this year. Last week,in the final regular-season game, theQuakers trailed Jamestown 14-3 afterthree quarters but rallied to score 3TDs in the final frame and pull out a23-14 win.

“That says something about thekidsʼ character,”Orchard Parkcoach GeneTundo said.“They never gaveup. Jamestown isa tough team andto come back likethat at their placeis something.”

Orchard Parkhad alreadyclinched secondplace in the AASouth Divisionand will hostLockport in thefirst round thisweekend.

“We didnʼtwant to go intothe playoffs with aloss,” Tundo said.“It was better towin the second seed the way we did.”

The Quakers also appear to bepeaking at the right time, winning 5straight games.

“Weʼve had to deal with a bunch ofinjuries,” Tundo said. “Weʼve had kidsin-and-out of the lineup. Iʼm amazedthat we weathered the storm. Weʼrehealthy now and a lot of guys gotvaluable playing time.”

In 2009, the Quakers lost to NorthTonawanda in the semifinals andmissed playing in Ralph WilsonStadium for the first time 10 years.Tundo feels that this yearʼs team hasa real chance to return to The Ralph.

“We have a good chance to makea run at it,” he said. “Our defense isplaying well right now. We only gave

up 130 yards to Jamestown.”Safety Paul Leavell intercepted a

pair of passes in the win. Leavell, whoalso ran 12 yards for a TD, is theQuakersʼ defensive leader.

“Paul has a good football IQ,”Tundo said. “He calls all of our signalsbased on the formations he sees andthe plays he thinks the other team is

going to run. Hehas done a greatjob.”

Leavell, whoalso serves asOPʼs long snap-per, is averaging8 tackles pergame.

“Heʼs obviouslya student of thegame,” Tundosaid. “He hasgood naturalstrength and heʼsquick. He hasgood instincts andgood reactions.”

Leavell wasundaunted whenTundo asked himduring the pre-season to call thedefense, just like

a coach would.“I had a good idea of what should

be run,” he said. “I knew where every-one was supposed to go. Coach Tundodoes the scouting and I make the callsbased on the scouting report.”

Leavellʼs father, Mike, was one ofthe first Connolly Cup winners. MikeLeavell was named the top player inWestern New York in 1979 as a seniorat St. Francis.

Paul Leavell says he has nodreams of winning the Connolly Cuplike his dad did.

“Everyone knows offense gets allthe news and write-ups,” he said. “Thevoters usually look at touchdowns andscoring. Defense is in the back-ground.”

Back On TrackBy Mark Adair

Canisius reboundedfrom two straight lossesto beat Bishop Kearney54-6 last weekend.

The Crusaders enteredthe game on a 2-gamelosing skid that had shak-en the confidence of theteam.

“We got back to havingfun,” coach BrandonHarris said. “We neededto get into a rhythm. Weneeded to shore up somethings and get back ontrack with what we dobest. Most of all, we justhad to enjoy playing foot-ball again.”

Three weeks ago,Canisius was 4-0 and fly-ing high. The Crusadershad just garnered a hugeamount of media atten-tion by beating ErieCathedral Prep 30-20.

Many had Canisius asthe top team in WesternNew York and a few hadthem as the top AA teamin New York State.

“Weʼre a young footballteam,” Harris said. “Thekids got a taste of earlysuccess. They had a lotof people believing inwhat they were doing.”

But what followed was stunning. With undefeatedAquinas looming on the schedule, Canisius hoped tomake quick work of struggling arch-rival St. Joeʼs, whoentered their annual grudge game with a 1-3 record.

And Canisius was soundly thumped 50-26.It was the worst loss the Crusaders had suffered in a

long time, more so because of how the teams had enteredthe game. Canisius was supposed to get past their strug-gling rival, setting up an matchup of undefeated Catholicteams, two NYS heavyweights.

“Our kids learned,” Harris said. “You have to beat thedragon in front of you, not the dragon around the corner.”

While a loss to St.Joeʼs always hurts, thisone was paticularly hum-bling.

“We learned somevaluable life lessons,”Harris said. “The kindthat will help away fromthe football field some-day.”

Canisius, still sufferingfrom the shock of gettingpounded by St. Joeʼs,lost to Aquinas the fol-lowing week.

“We had opportunitiesto win,” Harris said. “Ithink the St. Joeʼs gamecarried over. The kidscame out hard againstAquinas. But whenAquinas flexed theirmuscle, we didnʼt havethe resolve to flex backand the game got awayfrom us.”

Harris says that, despite the losses, histeam is still on track toaccomplish quite a bitthis season.

“Every Alumnus I evermet has said that youʼvegot to beat St. Joeʼs,”Harris said. “Thatʼs notgood enough for me.

Beating St. Joeʼs is 4th on our list every year. Goal num-ber-1 is to win the championship.”

Harris said that most of his teamʼs goals are still intact.“We wanted to go undefeated,” he said, “but thatʼs not

available to us anymore. But we still have the ability to winour league and win our championship.”

Harris feels that the Crusaders got back to showingwho they are against Bishop Kearney.

QB Travis Eman rushed for 42 yards and a TD andalso completed 6 of 13 passes for 135 yards and a TD.

Mercer Timmis, a first-year junior at Canisius, rushedfor 203 yards and 4 TDs on just 8 carries in the win.

Canisius RB Mercer Timmis (20) and QB TravisEman led Cansius to a 54-6 win over Timon lastweekend.

Timmis, who followed Eman down the QEW fromToronto, has rushed for 1,025 yards and 12 TDs this sea-son. Both players enrolled at Canisius as a means to fur-ther their development in football.

Eman burst onto the scene last fall as he led Canisius tothe Msgr. Martin AA title.

“The Canadian Press has written a lot about Travis,”Harris said. “Mercer read about Travis and decided hewanted to try the same route. He sent me an e-mail with alink to a youtube video. I was interested but he had to quali-fy academically so I sent him to our admissions director.”

St. Joeʼs was actually the first WNY school to have aCanadian player star on the football field. SandroDeAngelis, who grew up in Fort, Erie, played at Nebraskaafter St. Joeʼs. DeAngelis was recently named the MVP ofthe Grey Cup game and spent last season with HamiltonTiger-Cats.

Also, another Canadian, running back Akeel Lynch ishaving a huge season with St. Francis.

“This is no different than our kids going up to Canada toplay hockey,” Harris said. “People donʼt know the sacrificesthese families make. There is no such thing as a footballscholarship. The only money is from need-based financialaid and itʼs based on a familyʼs tax returns. Nobody goes toa Catholic school for free.”

Most of the Canadian players are incurring far mostcosts to pursue their dreams of playing big-time collegefootball.

“Those families also have to pay room and board inaddition to most - if not all - of the schoolʼs tuition,” Harrissaid. “They pay more money that a Buffalo-area kid pays togo to UB.”

Timmis has burst onto the scene, much like Eman did in2009. The 6-2, 205-pound junior has been timed at 4.5 inthe 40-yard dash.

“If you find a better running back than that kid, let meknow,” Harris said. “I donʼt think there is one. Mercer is anexplosive runner. He runs hard and he runs violently. UB isdefinitely interested in him. Frankly, there will be a lot of col-leges that want a kid that big, that physical and that fast.”

Harris says he was surprised at just how good Timmishas been.

“I watched him on video with his Canadian team,” Harrissaid. “He was running for 400 yards a game. It was hard totell what kind of a runner he was until he got here.”

Eman is also having another great season, passing for935 yards and 11 TDs. He has rushed for 669 yards.

“Heʼs doing great on the field and in the classroom,”Harris said.

The Crusaders are now 5-2 and play in Ohio againstWalsh Jesuit this weekend. After that, Canisius will playleague rival St. Francis and then start the playoffs.

Harris says his players are ready to go after the rest oftheir goals.

“They are optimistic,” Harris said. “We got rid of some ofthe bad stuff from St. Joeʼs and Aquinas and weʼre ready togo from here.”

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

It was Rivalry Week in Western New York last week.Itʼs become a decent tradition in WNY football... T-NT

Night starts the weekend with an early game. Lancasterand Depew renew a rivalry that stretches almost 90years. Fredonia has battledDunkirk for over 100 years.

Some years, Canisius andSt. Joeʼs play on the sameweekend but that game fellearlier this season.

This year, one of Buffaloʼslongest-running rivalries mayhave quietly come to an end.

Grover Cleveland wasopened on the site of the for-mer “Normal School andTeacherʼs College” in 1931.

The following season,Grover played Lafayette in thefinal game of the season.

Lafayette, which hasplayed football since 1904,has won more Harvard Cupchampionships than any otherBuffalo school. The last Cupthe Violets claimed, however, was in the 1930s.

When Buffaloʼs schoolswere neighborhood opera-tions, the game pitted Italiansfrom the Upper West Sideagainst Italians from theLower West Side.

At that time, the hooplasurrounding the rivalry was huge, according to longtimeGrover coach Art Serotte. Serotte now does color com-mentary for WJJLʼs radio broadcasts of the Harvard Cupteams.

“I love doing radio,” Serotte said. “Iʼm undefeatedsince 1992. I got all the right answers up there.”

Serotte, who played for Bennett in the 1950s, tookover as Grover Cleveland coach in 1964. The Presidentswere in the midst of a 0-22-5 stretch.

“I took over and we lost all six games,” Serotte said. “Ithink we scored three touchdowns all year.”

Serotte began to win in the late 1960s and finally beat

Lafayette in 1970.“It was a great rivalry,” Serotte said. “The schools were

made up of kids from Italian-American neighborhoodsthat bordered on each other. That stadium was packed, absolutely packed, and the fans used to get on you. Itreally was for neighborhood pride. It was the biggestgame of the year and you threw the records away.”

In recent years, the winning team has been awardedthe Mineo & Sapio Cup. Grover holds a 7-2 advantageover Lafayette.

When the City School District began the magnetschool program, the populations of the schoolʼs began tochange. Instead of neighborhood operations, the schools

were full of kids who camefrom all parts of the city.

“The magnet program tookaway a lot of the good rival-ries,” Serotte said. “The feel-ings about the rivalrieschanged. It wasnʼt the rivalryit used to be.”

And now, Lafayette will beclosed after this school year. The school will be rehabbedand re-opened but whether itwill be called Lafayette, noone knows.

“I want to be positive aboutit,” Serotte said. “I love thefact that they are re-buildingthe schools. City Honors andBennett are beautiful. ButLafayette has a lot of tradition.”

So much tradition, in fact, that the original Harvard Cupstill sits in the schoolʼs trophycase. The Violets retired itafter they won championshipsin 1906, 1907 and 1908.

Which is why losing theLafayette football program isso heart-wrenching for old-time Harvard Cup people.

Serotte was disheartened when he heard that theHarvard Cup teams were disbanding the ancient leagueand joining the Section 6 Federation.

“It was very traumatic for me in the beginning,” Serottesaid. “Iʼve been involved in Harvard Cup football since myolder brother played in the 1949 game.”

But, even the old-school coach has come to see thatthe move was good.

“When I saw the first game with the crowds comingin,” Serotte said, “I got taken in by the moment. Once Isaw what our kids could do, I knew it was the right thing.Change is hard to take but it has to happen.”
