Ground floorsGround floor design
GeneralWhen designing a ground floor the following should be considered in addition to the achievement of the desired U-value.
• Appliedfloorloading
• Positionoftheinsulationwithinthe floor structure
• Minimisingthermalbridging,airleakageandpreventingcondensationforming
IntroductionGround bearing floors can include insulationeitherbeloworabovetheconcreteslab,dependingonthechoiceofthedesigner.Iftheinsulationisinstalledbelowtheslab,thisincreasesthethermalcapacityofthebuilding,helpingtomaintainsteadyinternaltemperatures.Ifinsulationisinstalledabovetheslab,thebuildingwillrespondmuchmorequicklytotheheatingsystem.Suspendedfloorsareusuallyinsulatedinsuchawaythattheyofferreducedthermalmassandrespondquicklytotheheatingsystem.Inthecaseofsuspendedconcrete,theinsulationisinstalledabovethedeck,eitherunderascreedortimberboarding.Suspendedtimberfloorsarenormallyinsulatedbetweenthejoists.Floorinsulationisofparticularimportanceif installing underfloor heating. The use ofchannelled rigid insulation boards cancombine the function of floor insulation andhousingfortheheatingpipes.
AppliedfloorloadingAllmaterialsarecompressedunderload.Insulationmaterialsusedunderslabs,screedsandchipboardshouldbecapableofaccommodatingtheappliedloadswiththeminimumofcompression.
Standardised values are available to the designerforthedeadloadsappliedbybuildingcomponentsandtheestimatedactiveloadsforvarioustypesofbuildinguse.Theseformthestructuraldesignrequirementsofthefloor, butare of less value when considering the compressionresistancerequirementsofthefloorastheactiveloadsarelikelytobelocalisedorpointloads, notuniformlydistributedloads.
Position of InsulationAswaspreviouslystated, thepositionoftheinsulation in the floor has an influence over the thermal characteristics that the floor brings to thebuilding,howeveritalsohasrelevancewhenconsideringtheactiveloadsthatapplyduetotheuseofthefloor.Obviously,intimberjoistfloorswheretheinsulationmaterialisplacedbetweenthejoiststheentireloadiscarriedbythejoistsandthereisnoloadontheinsulation.However,wheretheinsulationisbelowaslab,screedortimberboardstheentireload is acting on the insulation.
Pointloadsarespreadbythelayersabovetheinsulation so that the load acting on the insulationislowerthantheloadappliedtothefloorsurface.Thespreadofaloadisafunctionofthedepthofthelayerabovetheinsulation.Thismeansthatapointloadappliedtoafloorwheretheinsulationispositionedbelowathinscreedwillresultinahigherappliedloadonthe insulation than where the insulation was positionedbelowathickerfloorslabbecausethe load is bearing on a smaller area of insulation under the screed. Of course the differingdeadloadappliedbythescreedandthe floor slab should also be allowed for when calculatingthetotalloadappliedtotheinsulation.
Active and dead loadsTheactualappliedfloorloadactingontheinsulationmaterialhastwocomponents:
• Thedeadload,whichisduetotheweightofthematerialslaidontheinsulant,and
• Thedesignloadassociatedwiththeuseofthe floor
Forspecificapplicationstheguidanceandrecommendations contained in BS EN 1991-1-1:2002andBSEN1990:2002+A1:2005shouldbefollowed,andthiswillhelpthedesigner ensure that the strength of the floor will besufficienttosupportanyappliedloadsoverthe loaded area.
Thedesignermustalsoconsiderthedynamicloadsandhowtheyareapplied.
Inrealitytheloadsassociatedwiththeuseofthefloorwillnotbeapplieduniformly.Infactmanyloadsareappliedinalocalisedwayorevenaspointloadssothatwhilsttheoverallload on a floor is in line with the relevant standardsthelocalisedloadingmaybemanytimeshigher.Forexample,acupboardraisedonfeethasasignificantlyincreasedpointloadingcomparedtoonesatonthewholebase. This results in increased localised loading acting on the insulation.

Compression resistanceTheinsulationmaterialwillbecompressedbythetotalloadappliedtoit.Itisvitallyimportantthat the insulation material has sufficient compressionresistancetorestricttheeffectsofthecompressiveload.Compressionresistanceismeasuredintwoways,mostcommonlytheimmediateeffectofcompressiveloadismeasuredandthisisquotedasacompressionresistanceinkPa.Theapplicationssectionshowsthecompressionresistanceofindividualinsulationmaterials,thisisusefulinidentifyingthegeneralsuitabilityofamaterialfortheapplicationintended.Thesecondmeasurementofcompressionresistancemeasuresthelongterm effects of loading on a material and is describedascompressivecreep.Wherehigherloadsareappliedthisfigurehashighrelevanceas long term loading will result in greater progressivecompressionofthicknessinsomeinsulation materials than others.
Compressive creepCompressivecreepisthemeasuredvalueofthelong term behaviour of a material under load. Highresistancetocompressivecreepiscriticalforlong-termstructuralperformance.Theidealinsulation material used in flooring needs to be strong without being brittle over the long term asthiswillminimiseanybuildingmovement.Amaterialwithsuperiorresistancetocompressivecreepenablesdesignerstotrulyoptimisetheirdesigntomaximisethepotentialusesofthestructurewithouttheriskoffailureinthemediumto long term.

Thermal Bridging and Air LeakageThermal bridges are a significant source of heat lossandtheymayalsocauselocalisedcondensation and mould growth. The details on thefollowingpagesillustratebestpractice.

Determining the U-valueThe tables for each ground floor solution show typicalU-valuesforarangeoffloorconstructions,assumingaconductivityof1.50W/mKforthegroundbelowthefloor.
The high number of variables that have to be takenintoaccountcansignificantlyaffectthe U-valueforaparticularsetofconditions. ProjectspecificU-valuecalculationscanbesuppliedbyourTechnicalAdviceandSupportCentre.
CondensationAvapourcontrollayerisnotnormallyrequiredformostgroundfloorconstructions.However, avapourcontrollayerisrecommendedbetweentheinsulationandachipboardfloor,especiallyifthereisariskofexcessivemoisturefromthefloorslabdryingout.
