Why Exercise?
Regular exercise improves health and wellbeing and helps people avoid some health problems, such as
obesity
The Facts
• In 2008, 16.8% of boys aged 2 to 15, and 15.2% of girls were classed as obese, an increase from 11.1% and 12.2% respectively in 1995.
• In 2008, almost a quarter of adults (24% of men and 25% of women aged 16 or over) in England were classified as obese (BMI 30kg/m2 or over).

The Global Obesity Problem
Exercise also helps avoid heart disease, and can relieve stress and
tension. The chances of health problems are greater in people who
do not exercise

• Exercise = A form of physical activity done to maintain or improve health and/or physical fitness. Exercise is not competitive sport.
• Fitness = The ability to meet the demands of the environment
• Health = A state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity
