WILD AND REMOTE

The islands of the Asia Pacific are home to an astonishing diversity of indigenous cultures with ancestral traditions and beliefs dating back thousands of years. Shamans still practise their craft in remote archipelagos of Malaysia and Indonesia; the funeral rites of the Toraja people of Sulawesi are world renowned. The biodiversity in this part of the world is equally remarkable. With more than 400 endemic bird species, New Guinea has the most varied avifauna on the planet. You’ll also find underwater wonders in equal measure such as the coral reefs of Palau, one of the “Seven Underwater Wonders of the World.”

Join us on an active adventure to Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia or to remote island groups in Southeast Asia. Explore by Zodiac®, kayak, glass-bottom boat or on foot. Divers — grab your C-card. You will not be disappointed.

Onboard LifestyleSilver Discoverer is the perfect platform for viewing untamed landscapes. Distinctions such as elegant, all-suite accommodations with butler service, complimentary fine wines and spirits, and truly world-class cuisine are luxuries rarely seen in expedition cruising. And complimentary WiFi throughout the ship allows you to connect with friends and family any time you please.

With just 120 guests, the onboard ambience is warm and friendly, and there’s considerable opportunity to meet and mingle with your expedition team and fellow travellers. After all, one of the greatest joys of an expedition is the company you meet and keep.

Silversea Expeditions To truly experience your destination, be it in the wild, in a city, or along the fringes of civilisation we’ve assembled a team of experts from all relevant fields. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from eminent naturalists, geologists, biologists, historians, and ornithologists, all of whom have the education, research experience and personal accomplishments to make them ideal companions for your adventure.

You can attend daily briefings and lectures presented by professionals hand-picked for their expertise in specific areas, depending upon your destination. Join our naturalist as you seek out the Malaysian Sun Bear. Receive a briefing from our geologist before you hike through some of the most unusual landscapes you’ll ever see. Or learn more from an anthropologist about the Dingaal people of Lizard Island and their Dreamtime beliefs.

The Royal Geographical Society: An Exclusive Partnership Thanks to this distinguished alliance, Silversea Expeditions guests can enjoy detailed scientific and historical information collated by The Royal Geographical Society from centuries of scientific exploration. Founded nearly 200 years ago, the society, whose patron is The Queen of England, has supported some of the world’s most acclaimed explorers and scientists, celebrated names like Darwin, Livingstone, Hillary, Shackleton, Wallace and Scott.

Its archives contain over two million items from maps and photographs to artefacts and books, a vast treasure trove to historians and scientists alike. And now to the guests of Silversea Expeditions.

There are still lands out there where few have ever set foot. Deserted atolls untouched by time or tourists. Vast yet fragile rainforests that Nature still claims as her own. From coral wonders to tribal ceremonies, from endemic wildlife to colonial legacies, from Koror to Kawthaung — these expeditions venture to a spectacular diversity of cultures and landscapes. Look closer, delve deeper. Swim with wild dolphins in the “Galápagos of the Orient”. Meet the Asmat people of Papua. Dive into the underwater gardens of the Coral Triangle. Experience the elixir of the unknown.

MELANESIA, MICRONESIA & POLYNESIAFor the inveterate adventurer, the equatorial Pacific is the last great place to disappear. Far-flung islands lost in the immense Pacific; Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia support an incredible diversity of tribal cultures with an intriguing repository of ancestral traditions, and untouched natural beauty.

SUGGESTED EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS

• See landscapes as varied as lagoons, coral reefs, forests, waterfalls, geysers and more

• Experience first-class diving and snorkelling to see spectacular marine life, as well as a number of WWII wrecks

• Visit local tribal villages and learn about their crafts and customs

• Discover rare wildlife from an endangered sea cow and sea turtles to the bird of paradise and the world’s smallest dolphin

• Discover the alpine splendour of New Zealand’s South Island and meet the Maori people

Living in a vast area that stretches for over three million square miles, the societies of Oceania are not only separated by distance, but often from each other. High mountains and dense rainforest create local cultures with unique behaviours and traditions, and in many areas, Western industrialisation has had little impact on everyday life. More than a hundred Melanesian languages are spoken in the Republic of Vanuatu. From the Asmat tribe of Papua New Guinea to the Phoenix Islands — the world’s largest marine reserve, each far-flung island group offers untold opportunity for genuine, authentic discovery.

At the far western frontier, the Federated States of Micronesia contain some of the most traditional people of the Pacific, and experiencing their warm, ceremonial hospitality is one of the highlights of any expedition. Their natural beauty is equally compelling. Here you’ll find exquisite landscapes, lush vegetation, nesting beaches and natural aquariums at every turn; unspoiled Kosrae is a dream destination for scuba divers and hikers alike.

Then there are the Edens of the South Pacific: New Caledonia, Samoa, Bora Bora. Dive shipwrecks in Tuvalu. Gaze at the mysterious marae of ancient navigators. Accept the challenge of a Cook Island warrior, and soak in the fantasy images of jade peaks and lagoons.

A TASTE OF YOUR ITINERARY

Murik Lakes & Kopar Village, Sepik River, Papua New Guinea — Voyage 9621We’ll attempt to enter the lake passages using our fleet of Zodiacs. At the small village of Karau a traditional Sing-sing will take place, with several groups singing and dancing simultaneously. Silver Discoverer will reposition to the Sepik River where we’ll navigate upriver for a scenic Zodiac tour that will include a stop at Kopar.

Ambrym, Vanuatu — Voyages 9525 & 9604Highly active volcanos peer over dramatic black shores. The Rom dance awaits, performed during grade-taking ceremonies or men’s secret society meetings. Dancers clad in banana leaves disappear into clouds of dust raised by stomping feet.

Aniwa and Tanna, Vanuatu — Voyages 9525 & 9604 Welcome to Aniwa, a “Makatea” island, where an underwater world awaits our exploration. In Tanna, we’ll go ashore to Port Resolution and visit the top of Mount Yasur, an active volcano. Watch as lava spews skyward against the dusky sky.

Kapingamarangi, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia — Voyage 9524Cross the lagoon to the small community of islanders. The crystal-clear waters are all yours to enjoy, so swim and snorkel away as you watch handmade canoes carrying dried pandanus leaves used for mat weaving.Expedition highlights are subject to tides.

MICRONESIA, MELANESIA & POLYNESIA

Explore the waters and islands of the Pacific Ocean through the accounts of early European scientists and navigators, including the îsles sous les vents of French Polynesia, first named by Captain James Cook as part of the “Society Islands” archipelago.

Share in the discoveries made by the nineteenth century French explorers Captain Louis Isidore Duperrey and Dumont D’Urville, aboard the Coquille. Their scientific discoveries were recorded in the seminal account

“Voyage Autour du Monde”, a five volume account by D’Urville, complete with remarkable illustrations of people and places never before seen in Europe and based on over 5,000 botanical and insect specimens brought back to Paris.

A successful first foray into the Pacific in 1800 led French explorer Louis de Freycinet to undertake a voyage of circumnavigation in command of Uranie in 1817. His prime motive was to gather intelligence about the people and places of the Pacific in addition to collecting new botanical specimens.

ASIA

Journey beyond Bali or Bangkok to unearth treasures rarely seen in Asia. Discover the Mergui archipelago with its hornbills, monkeys and sea gypsies. Gaze amazed at the ancient temples of Bagan. And encounter the orangutans of Camp Leakey.

SUGGESTED EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS

• Spend two days in the Agats where elaborately dressed warriors greet you in hand-carved canoes

• Swim with dolphins in the Ogasawara Islands, the “Galápagos of the Orient”

• Learn about volcanism in the Pacific Ring of Fire• Enjoy discovering local tribes and learning their

local customs• Observe indigenous flora and fauna that includes

extraordinary marine life, flying foxes and perhaps the elusive bird of paradise

• Visit Camp Leakey and see orphaned Orangutans • Experience first-class diving and snorkelling — the marine

biodiversity of Raja Ampat is the highest on Earth

Culturally, Asia fascinates. Over time an incredible diversity of intriguing and highly artistic cultures have evolved from the fierce Asmat woodcarvers of Papua to the Toraja people of Sulawesi with their pagan funeral rites. The vast New Guinea rainforest is a mega-diversity hot spot, home to such rare and wonderful creatures as the Matchie’s tree kangaroo and the beautiful bird of paradise. A gorgeous assembly of coral gardens sprawl across the ocean floor; the reefs of Raja Ampat in the heart of the Coral Triangle are quite possibly the richest coral ecosystem in the world.

Further east, savour the volcanic beauty of Japan and Micronesia. Tori-shima, a protected bird sanctuary, is home to the beautiful short-tailed albatross. Whales and dolphins cavort around the Ogasawara Archipelago. Or turn your gaze to the Malay Archipelago. Snorkel in the gin-clear waters of the Mergui Archipelago.

Expedition highlights are subject to tides.

ASIA

Discover the wealth of map, chart and archive material held at the Society relating to the early European exploration of East Asia, including the studies of Alfred Russel Wallace, the nineteenth-century father of ‘biogeography’.

In 1854 Wallace embarked on an expedition to the Malay Archipelago, the world’s largest group of islands where he developed his evolutionary theory of the ‘Wallace line’ which in turn helped to advance and inform Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. Wallace was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1854. His worth was acknowledged by the many honours bestowed during his lifetime, including the Society’s Founder’s Medal in 1892 to ‘the well-known naturalist and traveller and co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection, in recognition of the high geographical value of his great works’.

These expeditions offer many opportunities for experienced divers to explore some of the top sites in the Asia Pacific, and our expedition teams have carefully crafted each itinerary to provide you with the most awe-inspiring adventures. Destinations include such regions as the Solomon Islands, Palau and Raja Ampat in New Guinea, which have been celebrated as some of the world’s most spectacular diving hotspots, featuring blue holes, hidden caves and tunnels, and an astonishing spectrum of coral fish and rare sea creatures.

A team of experts including marine biologists and environmentalists will be on hand to share their extensive knowledge of the region.

Scuba Diving Onboard Silver DiscovererThe programme is complimentary, although space is limited and we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. The exact days and dive locations will be determined by tides and local conditions, but we try to dive, when possible, at least once and often twice per day. Generally, dives are never deeper than 20 to 25 metres to allow for longer dives.

When all of the following qualifications have been received and verified, we’ll send you notification and add you to the programme.

AMAZING DESTINATIONS WITH SILVERSEA EXPEDITIONS

Africa & the Indian OceanThe West Coast of Africa is largely unknown to tourists. Still raw and innocent. Still utterly authentic. Or set your sights on the leopards of Sri Lanka, and beyond to the jewels of the Indian Ocean including the Maldives and in the Seychelles, the Garden of Eden, itself.

AlaskaA glacier calving with a thunderous roar. A humpback breaching in a spectacular display. Grizzlies, Bald Eagles, Tufted Puffins and totem poles. Let the timeless sensations of nature renew your spirit on a journey to the Kenai Peninsula and deep inside the Inside Passage.

AntarcticaCast off to the bottom of the world. Drift across glacial waters, passing giant prisms of ice riding an ink-blue sea. Witness wildlife, unafraid and unperturbed by your presence: bellowing elephant seals, raucous rookeries of penguins, swooping seabirds in every shape and form.

ArcticFollow in the wake of the Vikings to Greenland and Iceland. Explore Svalbard where the polar bear roams freely. Hike and Zodiac amid icebergs and spectacular tundra. Seals and walrus haul out on rocky shores. Whales breach before your eyes. Delve into the wonder of one of the planet’s most inspiring places.

Australia & New ZealandThe world’s smallest continent is a land of superlatives with amazing wildlife and unrivalled scenery. It’s hard to imagine anything more beautiful than the Kimberley. Unless it’s New Zealand’s splendour; her Sub-Antarctic islands are a pelagic wonderland.

Central America & CaribbeanLet your thoughts drift to balmy breezes and swaying palms. Hike through tropical rain forests, visit jungle villages, and cruise by Zodiac to a deserted Island. Set sail for some of the most enchanting destinations in the Americas. In the most alluring way imaginable.

Galápagos IslandsSnorkel with penguins, dive with sea lions, hike lava tunnels and be transported back to the beginning of time. Behold giant tortoises, Blue-Footed Boobies and iguanas basking in the sun. Experience the “Enchanted Isles” from the all-suite comfort of Silver Galapagos.

Northern Europe & the British IslesFrom Atlantic Islands and Iberian shores to France’s wine country and the charm and historic riches of Ireland and Britain, these intriguing expeditions reveal new dimensions of even familiar nations.

Russian Far EastLong closed to the Western World, the Sea of Okhotsk is home to some of the world’s least travelled destinations. In the Kuril Islands, the seabird population can only be described as spectacular. The world’s largest bear roams Kamchatka, while the Bering Sea supports virtually every form of Arctic life. For nature lovers, welcome to nirvana.

South AmericaExperience the diversity of South America from the lush Darien Jungle to Chilean lakes, and glaciated fjords. Admire the pre-Columbian ruins and desertscapes of the Atacama. Ride a Zodiac around calving glaciers. Behold penguins, condors, sea lions — a fantastic array of seabirds and marine life as we journey south.
