In the Open Mic competition we had three very successful entries: Arisa Hikosaka Year 8, Hanne Arts and Evelien Arts, Year 12. They will all be appearing on the digital Open Mic album. Also announced this week, our school won the first Nord Anglia Global Classroom Debate. Representing our school in the final against BIS Pudong, China, were Arkadiy Osovtsov, Nathalie Scharpf, Filip Hes, Amy Keech, Adam Vajda and Nils Lamers. Congratulations to our Year 12 students on this amazing achievement. The motion was challenging... ‘Attempts to extend radically the human lifespan should be welcomed, not feared’ ... and both teams impressed the judges with the number of arguments they presented and the range of evidence used to support them. The judges also commented on the positive and respectful way in which the two teams communicated with each other. Last week was an exciting week in school with all our Key Stage 3 students attending a performance of the Merchant of Venice. We also had the pleasure of welcoming to the music department The British International School Budapest. More on both these items later in the newsletter. It has also been a very intense and busy week for our Year 10 and Year 12 students who have been working hard in their end of year examinations. This week has also seen some exciting events take place. On Wednesday 11th June, both the Key Stage 3 Poetry Competition organised by Mr Young, and the Global Classroom “Ragtrade” competitions took place. Graduation Ball - May, 2014‘Are we at the end of the road or at the beginning of a new journey?’ This was the question on the lips of our senior IB students on Friday, 23rd May, as they joined with family, friends and teachers at the Kempinski Hotel to celebrate their graduation from school. After two almost interminable years of intellectual toil, the thirty-four survivors of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme could finally put their pens down and say, ‘We did it!’ Now at last there was time to celebrate and to reflect on their achievements, and to begin to anticipate the way ahead. What new adventures would await them, in which places and with which new friends? But before the new chapter begins, let’s take a moment to recall the wonderful evening we shared together….

The venue was nothing short of superb, surpassed only by the magnificence of the students’ appearance – flowing gowns, glittering dresses, designer suits and amazing hair styles. The musical entertainment provided by the Jahanpour sisters Hoda and Nura, Mina Cho and Jun-Min, and Zuzana Zilins-ka, would have graced any Hollywood awards ceremony, and the valedictory addresses spoke with fondness of the school and gratitude for how it had prepared the students for their future lives. The ‘Happy’- video choreographed, performed and edited by the IB students themselves spoke volumes about their creativeness, technical skills and sense of fun (if not so much about their dancing skills). Indeed, the speeches from the staff described how this year group has always been ‘just that little bit special’, with many of the students having spent almost, if not all of their school life at BISB.With the main formalities over, it was time to raise a glass to salute the Class of 2014 and to embark upon the sumptuous feast prepared for the occa-sion. Standing in the buffet queue gave ample opportunity to chat casually with colleagues, friends, parents and students, and to find out more about future plans. Once the meal was over, the students went outside to release balloons into the night sky, a symbolic gesture of their own imminent flight into the wider world. A word of thanks must go to the main organiser of the event, Lucia Mozolova, who almost single-handedly put the evening’s programme together. It was a well-orchestrated event which uncoiled seamlessly from start to finish. And so, the school is somewhat diminished with the departure of the Class of 2014, those big characters who have frustrated us, tormented us and at times pleased us, too, but it’s pretty certain that we shall be hearing a lot about and from them in the future.Farewell, Class of 2014. May the road you travel lead you to where you want to go, and if it doesn’t, then choose a different road.

Au revoir from all of the staff at BISB

BIS Budapest visit BIS Bratislava

On Friday 6th June we were delighted to welcome BIS Budapest who came to perform to Primary and KS3 students as part of their Summer Tour. Students in Years 4-8 from Budapest enthralled us with lovely arrangements of pop songs for Rock Orchestra and Choir and our audience really enjoyed joining in with the popular songs. In return our own students performed for the Budapest students. Our upper school singers performed a multilingual version of ‘Let it go’ in which we spotted 8 different languages! Then, the whole of years 7 and 8 sang together in harmony ‘When I grow Up’ from the Musical ‘Mathilda’.All of the performances were slick and energetic and there was a happy atmosphere all around. It was a really enjoyable end to the week and we look forward to returning the favour by visiting BIS Budapest next year!Miss PriceSecondary Music Teacher

The Global Classroom News

As the holidays rapidly approach, students continue to be actively involved in Global Classroom projects.

Global Classroom Debate: The Grand Final

After our success in the online GC Debates this year we faced our sister school in China, BIS Pudong, in the final to debate the motion ‘Attempts to extend radically human life should be welcomed not feared’. Bratislava students, led with great skill by

Arkadiy Osvotsov our GC Student Leader, put forward numerous well researched and well-constructed arguments. Our opening statement had to be filmed and this was done with confidence and skill by student Barbara Petlakova. We are delighted to be able to announce that we won a resounding victory against our terrific opponents. Being crowned the first Global Classroom Debate Champions is a fitting accolade to a team who have worked independently and with commitment for an extended period of time, tackling diverse and challenging topics of debate. Well done to all students who participated! The feedback from the judges can be seen in full, along with the transcript of the debate, on the Studio area of the Global Classroomlog onto https://learning.bis.sk for more details.

The Rag TradeThe Rag Trade has been a Global Classroom business enterprise event which we have run with a group of years 7, 8 and 9 students during our Wednesday afternoon Enrichment programme. Students

were tasked with developing a business plan for a fashion design business. Their tasks included market research data analysis, web site construction (and none of our students had made a web site before starting this project!), developing a marketing strategy and, finally, pitching their businesses to an in-school ‘Dragon’s Den’ of judges made up of Mr. Farthing, Mrs. Eastwood and Mr. Cox. All three teams stood up to the intensive questioning of the Dragons in a way that would have amazed anyone watching – it genuinely amazed me! I am so impressed by the critical thinking skills and creativity of our students. The Dragons had an extremely difficult task, scoring across multiple criteria, to decide on a winning team to go forward to the Rag Trade Final. Only 4 points ultimately separated the top two teams! Special thanks also go to Ms. Price and Mrs. Radoja for their support of this project. We are delighted to announce that

BISB Rag Trade Winners were Sweet 16, a team consisting of Nina Nunezova, Nina Taranova and Na Young Kim, all of whom are in Year 7, and Minkyung Kwon and Helena Jia Qi Zhu of Year 8. The judges were particularly impressed with their smart presentation, excellent sample letters responding to customer complaints and queries, and very detailed and imaginative web site.

The film of their pitch, submission files and advertising samples, are

now with the panel of judges in America. The judges are Nancy Diehl (Master Teacher of Costume Design at New York University), Stephanie Kramer (of fashion giant Nicole Miller), and Torey Acri (who has over 15 years of experience in marketing and advertising with companies like Bloomingdales and Bluefly.com). The winning team will be awarded a £500 grant to start up or support entrepreneurial activity in their school. We wish Sweet 16 well in the final judging and look forward to hearing the results!

Open MicWe were also delighted to receive the final film of the Global Classroom Open Mic Event. Students from our family of schools submitted video or audio recordings of their musical performances. Ms. Price and I had a great day with students at the end of the first term recording their

contributions. We were delighted to hear that 3 students – Arisa Hikosaka performing ‘Spring’ by composer Joe Hisaishi, and Hanne and Evelein Arts singing ‘Stay’ by ‘Hurts’ – were included in the final album. You can watch it via the Global Classroom or directly on vimeo at http://vimeo.com/97655651

Finally we are delighted to announce the launch of the new Photography Competition which this year focuses on the theme ‘Adventure’. Full details on the entry details can be found on the Global Classroom. Entries must be submitted shortly after we return to school in September so please encourage your children to get snapping during the holidays for the chance to see their photography printed in the 2015 Nord Anglia Calendar. page 3

Bronze International AwardThe season for International Award trips has started successfully with the Bronze practice expedition in Hainburg, Austria on 22nd and 23rd May. There were 30 brave Year 9 students challenging themselves on their journey throughout the Austrian villages. Two days of walking started in the small town of Berg, followed by a great campsite for cooking a tasty dinner and setting up the tents for a good night’s sleep. The importance of planning was evident. Orientation, fitness, team work, these are only a few of the skills which students needed in order to overcome challenges during their journey. Feedback from students was very positive and they are all looking forward to the next challenges and routes ahead of them.Thank you to all who helped us with our long preparations and made sure our trip was safe for everyone.

Especially thank you to Ms Oravcova, Ms Bea, Mr Kellner and Ms Frontczak. Well Done!

Year 10 Business StudiesThe Year 10 Business Studies groups will be studying Human Resources over the coming weeks. If any parents involved in Human Resource Management could find time to come in and speak to the groups or help with roleplay and other activities, this would help the student to place their learning in a real world context. Particular topics to be covered include HR planning, Recruitment, Training, Motivation and Industrial Relations. If you think you can help then please contact me at the school. I look forward to hearing from [email protected] MacRury Head of Business and Economics

Year 10 Science ProjectYear 10 students are really excited about the Science Project which starts early next week. This is a science activity which involves all Year 10 students. The project will provide the students with an opportunity to extend their scientific minds beyond the classroom. Students develop their own experiments based on their scientific knowledge. Students are encouraged to explore ways in which to apply the scientific principles they have already mastered. The project is based on a “what if” question. The theme of the project will be chosen by the students on the planning day.Students are divided into small groups of 3-4. The project will run in three sessions:• Monday 16.06.2014: Planning and Designing• Monday 23.06.2014: Experimenting• Monday 30.06.2014: Presenting Each group will be assessed on their experiment and presentation by a panel of judges using set criteria. Winning groups will be presented with certificates. Year 9 students will have a chance to witness the experiments on 23.06.2014. So Year 10 students, participate in the project, implement your scientific knowledge and have fun!

Young EnterpriseThe Young Enterprise (YE) group of Year 10 and 2 CAS students have been working hard at setting up their business of importing and selling Mini-fans. They sold these on Thursday lunchtime at 5.99 Euros each. They were concerned about use in the classroom particularly since they have a spray mist function (just what you need in this hot weather). After consultation with some staff and Mrs Eastwood it has been agreed that their use in Science and ICT labs is not recommended and that the final say is at the discretion of the teacher in the room.

Many thanks for supporting the YE team over the past few months. They have achieved their business objectives and kept an eye on the finances at the same time.

EnrichmentEnrichment Develops Everyone

With only a few weeks left of term, Enrichment for this year is close to finishing. I would like to share the most recent Enrichment awards. The following students have been identified by their Enrichment teachers for their effort and contribution during activities. The students were given certificates and a letter for their parents.

International Award Service in Dubravka Alan Murin Barbora RozkopalovaVolunteering at Dog Shelter Sarah Doehring Ema KlukovaCookery Tyger Plant Emelia WuktichElectronics Victor Barbier Louis MignotEco-projects Linda Bujnakova Emma KristofovicovaTennis Helwan Felappi Zuzanna LebekBoot Camp Barbara Medenica Victoria RezesovaDrama Oleksii Grygoryshyn Kamila VycitalovaBasketball Indira Gram Jason WangEnterprise The Manh Pham Tereza Rattajova

Barbara Medenica has written a paragraph about her Enrichment activity… During these Enrichment blocks, I’ve been doing Boot Camp. We had to go through a lot of pain, but at least we know that we can and have to push ourselves because we can always do more. We were boxing, running, jumping, doing push-ups, sit-ups... but we found out that physical pain isn’t really that bad and that mental pain is the one that is stopping us from going more and doing more. Some of us discovered new hidden talents also.

Tyger Plant has written a paragraph about his Enrichment activity… Last half term I was in the Cookery Enrichment. It was a fun experience and I made new friends during it. In Enrichment we made bread, pizza, and some salsa. We also made some brownies for the local homeless shelter.

The final week of Enrichment is 25th June. In forthcoming newsletters I will share information about what Enrichment will entail next year, and of course the winners of this half term’s Enrichment awards will be announced.
