1 Orientation framework
During their work, teachers face a complex set of challenges and demands on their pro-
fessional competence and must be prepared for a wide variety of tasks. The orientation
framework of PHBern defines the teachers' spheres of activity and provides a common
basis for the thematic orientation of training and further education at PHBern. PHBern un-
derstands the development of professional skills as a multi-phased and continuous pro-
cess, during which knowledge, skills, values and convictions are developed and thus the
basis laid for professionalism in the teaching profession. Therefore, the professional de-
velopment of teachers is considered against the backdrop of the three phases; basic train-
ing, career entry phase and active career.
Figure 1: Three-phase development (orientation framework PHBern)
The professional competence that is gained during the basic training is developed further
through practicing the profession during the career entry phase and the active career.
At the end of the basic training and the career entry phase, the standards of PHBern,
which are formulated as milestones, serve as a goal-orientation for the professional activi-
ty of future teachers and teachers already in office. The standards define what teachers
should have achieved at certain points in time and simultaneously provide a basis for the
process of individual further development.

1.1 Standards
The standards to be met at the end of the basic training are as follows:
Planning and giving lessons
Based upon a differentiated understanding of the school subjects, grade-specific educa-
tional goals and a professional understanding of teaching and learning, teachers are able
to plan, to hold lessons in an adaptive manner, to evaluate and to reflect on the lessons.
Evaluation and diagnostics
Teachers are able to reconstruct, analyse and diagnose knowledge and learning prerequi-
sites. They are able to observe, record and evaluate development and learning processes
as well as performance, and encourage pupils based on this.
Counselling and assistance
Teachers are able to provide pupils with individualised counselling and assistance, as well
as being able to provide support in collaborating with others and learning and acting inde-
pendently.

room environment that is conducive to learning, deal with challenges in the classroom in a
solution-oriented manner while communicating with the school classes, study groups and
individual pupils in a manner appropriate to the situation.
Cooperation with school management and teaching staff
Teachers are able to participate in the cooperation within teams, with the teaching staff
and with school management. They are able contribute their knowledge and experiences
in a constructive manner.
Cooperation with parents
Teachers are able to provide parents with clear and appropriate information, communicate
with them and bring their experiences to bear when working together with parents.
Cooperation with specialists and institutions
According to the needs of the pupils, teachers, school classes and schools and taking the
framework conditions into account, teachers are able to communicate with the responsible
specialists and to make use of institutions in a targeted manner.

responsibilities of persons at the level of the school class, the school, education authori-
ties and school administration. They are able to gain information about administrative

Subject matter Image competence is interpreted under consideration of various aspects and considered in the con-
text of overarching competencies. Strategies and models that are deduced from the competence as-

In addition to criteria-oriented evaluations, the subjectivity of aesthetic experience and judgement is
also taken into account.
The characteristics of youth-cultural and everyday aesthetic image worlds, but also levels of artistic
development and gender-specific aesthetic patterns are dealt with. Tools for observing, diagnosing,
encouraging and individualising creative learning processes approach this task using variable lear n-

Subject matter By analysing and comparing historic and current positions in the field of didactics of art, a subject-
specific didactic differentiation of the personal understanding of the field takes place. Insights into r e-
search in the field of didactics of art reveal current trends in the development of the subject and assist
in achieving a reflective practice and argumentation appropriate to the field when planning, carrying
out and evaluating teaching. Teaching the subject is positioned in the context of cultural education.
Based on examples, concepts and the significance of interdisciplinary teaching projects, of exhibition
culture, of artists in schools, of extracurricular art education (e.g. art in public space) and of coopera-
tion with institutions (e.g. museum education) are discussed. In cooperation with the subject -specific
image project, questions regarding subject-specific didactics, which are relevant for the personal un-
derstanding of the subject, are formulated. The students’ own subject-specific and teaching practice
experiences are associated with theories and models pertaining to subject-specific didactics.

Based on a broad basic knowledge in the fields of reference free art, applied art and everyday aes-
thetics, structural properties of image projects and fundamentals and approaches for the creation of
images are developed. The assignment focuses on an individual image project, dealing with ad-
vanced artistic questions, which results in a comprehensive artistic image solution in the form of a
work of art or a body of work. Planning, implementing, documenting and presenting are elements that
are equally as important as the critical reflection on the artistic process and the final product.
