Horror - Horror offers the adrenaline rush and sense of fear but in a safe environment offering cathartic release and experience different feelings. Sad movies - Crying at a movie narrative offers cathartic release for existing deep rooted problems that they have. It also boosts self esteem and makes them feel better about the audience member’s own life. Comedy - When an audience member is feeling sad or depressed, comedy offers light hearted relatable situations, making them feel part of a group and not so isolated. There is often a goofy character that is a target for jokes and humor. This character is often plain and makes the audience member feel better about themselves.
