Folk Club Newsletter SECOND TIME AROUND With an added donation from club funds £50 was sent to the charity. Our remembrance night for Ewan MacColl was most enjoyable and I am grateful to Colin, Steve, Eric and Joy Foxley, Carolyn, Joe, Helen Jarvis and Phil Hind for finding appropriate songs and tunes for the occasion. Also appreciated for their contributions to the evening were new guitarist performer Chris Grace, originally from hereabouts, Andy Cooper, Jane Bednall, Dave Wood and Dave McGowan. I am really looking forward to this Friday, 4 th December when I am expecting visitors from the Owd Boots folk club in The Meadows as well as some students from the University Folk Club which meets at the Johnson Arms, Lenton. I have visited them three times now and they do some terrific singing and playing and are most refreshing. We recognise the absence of younger performers and the importance of them for the future so do try and get along and support and encourage them. I am aware that we do not see some of the people on our mailing list very often which I know reflects on the number of other activities and family demands elsewhere. If that is you please do at least try and come along sometime and show your support. A lot of work and time is spent running the club and all we look for is support when possible. I know myself that going out when tired is a challenge but often when I make the effort I enjoy myself thoroughly and am glad that I did go. Hope to see you soon. We will be discussing shortly whether to revert back to fortnightly. Your views would be appreciated. In my absence on 13 th November Steve & Colin hosted a ‘singaround’. This clashed with ‘Children in Need’ and numbers were down but an enjoyable night raised money for the occasion. Phil Hind – kazoo virtuoso?

SECOND TIME AROUND

With an added donation from club funds £50 was sent to the charity.

I am really looking forward to this Friday, 4th December when I am expecting visitors from the Owd Boots folk club in The Meadows as well as some students from the University Folk Club which meets at the Johnson Arms, Lenton. I have visited them three times now and they do some terrific singing and playing and are most refreshing. We recognise the absence of younger performers and the importance of them for the future so do try and get along and support and encourage them.

The music and enjoyment at the club continue to be excellent. In my absence on 13th November Steve & Colin hosted a ‘singaround’. This clashed with ‘Children in Need’ and numbers were down but an enjoyable night raised money for the occasion.

As advised Will Kaufman had to cancel because of a severe bout of sciatica and we are grateful to The Corndodgers for filling in at short notice. They are a fine local band with a good mix of songs many written by leader Andy Victor. Most have a real edge to them and give a sharp comment about current affairs and government decisions. This is in keeping with the

origins of the folk revival and is good to experience again. Acutely observed situations, well constructed songs as well as excellent arrangements and good performances by their 6 person line up on the night.

Good to see and hear the slide guitar played by John Hooper when not playing his familiar banjo.

A fine group and an excellent night with some terrific floor spots including Alan Harris on a rare visit, Bob Gibson (pictured, right), Sue Woollard (pictured, left), John McCormick and Chris Grace again.

REVIEW: The Corndodgers

December 4 ‘Singers and Performers Night’

(£2 + free raffle)

December 11 - The Jammy Codgers (£3)

December 15 – TUESDAY IN THE BAR – ‘The Lost Cause’ (free admission)

December 18 - Christmas Party (£3)

January 1 – New Year’s Day ‘singaround’

Upcoming nights at the STA Folk Club:

Above, Dave and Andy; top left, Sue and right, Bob

On 11th December we are very pleased that we can feature The Jammy Codgers, the Thursday night crowd from the bar. Could be a dozen or more of them playing foot tapping and dance tunes, interspersed with good songs. It should be great!

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all members and readers.
