Advent

Spiritual & Scripture

Talks December 13 - 7:00 P.M.

With Rev. Garry Koch

Enhance your Advent preparations for Christmas! Join us

for the second of two talks by Rev. Garry Koch on the

“Infancy Narratives” in the Gospel of St. Matthew and the

Gospel of St. Luke. Fr. Koch is the pastor of St. Benedict’s

Church in Holmdel, NJ and a Scripture commentator and col-

umnist in our Trenton Diocesan newspaper The Monitor. Fr.

Koch’s first talk (which was excellent and very well attended!)

concentrated on the Infancy Narrative in the Gospel according

to Matthew. Father’s second talk (this coming Wednesday;

(approximately 45 minutes) will begin at 7:00 P.M. in the Up-

per Church and will be followed by refreshments in the Lower

Church.

Second Collection This Weekend

For Religious Retirement Fund This weekend we will have a special second collection at all Masses for retired Catholic sisters,

nuns, brothers, and religious order priests. This collection is part of an annual national appeal and

will be taken up at all parishes in the Diocese of Trenton. Proceeds of the collection help meet

retirement expenses and the costs of prescription medications and nursing care. Many religious

communities lack adequate financial resources for retirement and elder care. Please give gener-

bi, or “Mass of the Rooster,” is a

tradition held by the Filipinos to prepare for the birth

of Jesus. This tradition began in the mid-1600s in the

Philippines where church bells would start ringing as

early as 3:00 AM, awakening people for 4:00 AM

Mass, in order to allow farmers to attend Mass be-

fore going off to work in the fields in the early

morning hours. The Monmouth County Simbang

Gabi Community invites all to the 9-Day Simbang

Gabi in the following churches:

Dec. 15 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Joseph, Keyport

Dec. 16 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Deal

Dec. 17 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Clement Church, Matawan

Dec. 18 - 7:30 p.m. - St. James Church, Red Bank

Dec. 19 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Catherine of Siena, Farmingdale

Dec. 20 - 7:30 p.m. - St. Benedict Church, Holmdel

Christmas 2017 Worship

Notes

Christmas (a holy day of obligation) falls on a Sun-

day this year, so please take note of the following in

chronological order. It is necessary to attend TWO

Masses in order to satisfy both the Sunday/Sabbath

obligation and the Christmas holy day obligation.

●Vigil Masses on Saturday, December 23 (4:00,

5:00, and 7:30) satisfy the Sunday/Sabbath obligation

and do not satisfy the Christmas obligation.

●Sunday Masses on December 24 at 7:00, 9:00,

10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 noon satisfy the Sunday/

Sabbath obligation and do not satisfy the Christmas

obligation.

●Christmas Vigil Masses on Sunday, December 24

at 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00, 7:30, 9:00 and 11:00 satisfy

the Christmas obligation and do not satisfy the Sun-

day/Sabbath obligation.

●For example, if one goes to the Saturday, Decem-

ber 23 Mass at 4:00 and the Sunday, December 24

Mass at 4:00, then that person has satisfied the Sun-

day/Sabbath obligation and the Christmas holy day

obligation.

●For example, if one goes to the Sunday, Decem-

ber 24 Mass at 4:00 and to no other Mass on Sunday

morning the 24th nor to a Vigil Mass on Saturday the

23rd, then that person has satisfied the Christmas obli-

gation but not the Sunday /Sabbath obligation and that

person should go to Confession as soon as possible

thereafter.

●The Christmas obligation and the Sunday/

Sabbath obligation are two separate obligations.

●Since the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God on

Monday January 1, 2018 is not a holy day of obliga-

tion this coming year, our Sunday evening Masses on

Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 4:00 and 7:30 will be

Sunday Masses satisfying the Sunday obligation and

not holy day Vigil Masses. We will however have two

Masses on Monday, January 1, 2018: at 8:00 A.M. as

usual and also at 12:00 Noon. There will be no 7:00

P.M. Mass on Monday, January 1, 2018.

●There will be no scheduled Confessions prior to

the Christmas Eve Vigil Masses, Christmas Day Mass-

es, and January 1 Masses. If a special need for Confes-

sion occurs on those dates, arrangements can be made

by contacting Fr. Butler, Fr. Nillo, or any one of our

visiting priests. Please consult the bulletin for special

extra times for Confession during the Advent Season.

"May you know the beauty of the season,

Merry Christmas. Have a peaceful & a

wonderful New Year"

During this wonderful season there is al-

ways the opportunity for the blues to arrive.

Try and find the middle ground. Change it

up. Make new traditions. Do something

different, something new. Go to mass.

St. Michael's has a group for those that need

support with life's new paths and journeys.

The PATHWAY TO HEAL Group is a min-

istry for widowed, separated, and divorced

persons.

Our group is here to help those who may be

new to the emotional stresses of separation

and loss in your world. If you need a place

to come and feel safe please plan on attend-

Please Join Us, All Are Welcomed.

At this month's group meeting the

Youth Group did a toy drive for Ea-

gles Up. The Christmas campaign is

called "Project Little Soldier" with

the large number of soldiers being

deployed, the Eagles Up campaign

strive to make their "Little Soldiers" who are left

behind, smile for the holidays. It is hard enough for

them to understand that their parents are away, let

alone the thought of spending the holidays without

them. Each soldier provides a wish list of two gifts

per child and they try to make every effort to make

the child's wish come true. So the Youth group col-

lected toys and gift cards for the organization. We

also make Christmas cards for the kids and their

families.

Eagles Up!

The following is a letter received from Afghanistan

Greeting Toni from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan,

Just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for

the very generous care package. Even though I am

share.

Everything you sent was much needed and very

appreciated. I can’t express into words how won-

Make a Good Confession During the Season of

Advent!

As the Season of Advent commenced last weekend and continues, we

focus our minds and hearts on our preparations for Christmas. The passage

from St. Mark’s Gospel urged us to “Be watchful! Be alert! You know not

when the time will come.” (Mk 13:33) The homilies that were preached at all

the Masses here at St. Michel’s last weekend further focused on the prepara-

tion of our souls for Christmas. Our homilists emphasized Prayer, Scripture,

and the Sacraments as vital parts of that preparation and they especially em-

phasized going to Confession during Advent as an opportunity to receive ab-

solution; an opportunity to receive grace, mercy, and blessings; an opportunity

to be in a state of grace on Christmas Day!

The following is an excerpt from the homily that Fr. Anthony DiPalma

preached here at St. Michael’s on Sunday, December 3, 2017 on the topic of

the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Advent Season. Please see the

schedule in this bulletin for the many days and times when this sacrament may

be received at St. Michael’s in the coming weeks.

In this holy Season that we commence today, each of us

is called to reflect on the many and diverse ways that we en-

counter and experience the Lord Jesus in our world…. It would be

a great shame, a tragedy even, if when the Lord visits us, we

somehow fail to recognize him!

First and foremost, Advent rightly calls to mind that glori-

ous and joyful day when heaven and earth were united by the

coming of God’s only Son, a Savior, born for us in Bethlehem. At

one and the same time, that Son dwelt among us revealing him-

self as truly the Son of God and the Son of Mary….Though he has

returned after his Death and Resurrection to his heavenly Father,

our faith informs us that Jesus indeed continues to remain with

us always – inviting us to encounter him and to know him not

only in the world to come but especially during this our life-

time….Of the many ways that Christ continues to minister among

us, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation Jesus is still very much at

work healing and forgiving sinners – just as He once did during

his earthly ministry.

In the Scriptures, on many occasions, the Lord would remind his disciples that

even the just man sins seven times a day! Jesus understood that ours was a world

mired in sin and temptation. There were times then and now when it was not only

challenging but exceedingly difficult to remain on the narrow path of righteous-

ness. And so with great ease and generosity, Jesus not only healed those with physical

ailments but he also graciously pardoned those who were spiritually ill. To many a sin-

ner, Jesus would utter these consoling words: “Go in peace, your sins are forgiven!”

The peace that we experience in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, offers each of

us the grace and the strength that we need in order to recognize those areas in our

own lives that need healing and mercy. The grace of this Sacrament of Confession al-

lows us not only to seek pardon for sins committed but also to begin again, attempting

to overcome any temptations and weaknesses that would separate us from the love of

Almighty God. In the Sacrament of Penance, which some Christians amazingly find

difficult to approach, we encounter a compassionate and loving Jesus who extends his

hands over us and offers us an embrace of peace and reconciliation. In Penance, it is

Jesus Himself who generously and abundantly forgives us our sins so that we likewise

might be merciful and forgiving toward those who sin against us.

This season of Advent that is upon us is really a gift and a fitting time for each

of us take a spiritual inventory of our individual lives. It is a time to identify those in-

stances where we need to seek pardon and forgiveness, those areas in our lives that

need healing and reconciliation, and those ways through which we can experience mer-

cy and new life in our relationship with God and with one another. There are numer-

ous days and times here at St. Michael’s when we can receive these sacramental gifts

by simply going to Confession. As we prepare ourselves for the coming feasts, what a

shame and in fact what a tragedy it would be if we failed to take advantage of the pre-

cious opportunity to experience throughout the year and especially in this Season of

Advent the peace and forgiveness of Christ Jesus.
