GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) Last Sunday evening, members of the parish staff accompanied our
catechumens and candidates who were “received” at the Cathedral by
Bishop Deeley during the ceremony called the Celebration of the Rite
of Election of Catechumens and of the Call to Continuing Conver-
sion of Candidates Who are Preparing for Confirmation and/or
Eucharist or Reception into the Full Communion of the Catholic
Church. Refreshments were served after the ceremony, giving the candidates an
opportunity to meet the bishop and spend some time touring the Cathedral (Bishop
Deeley had already received catechumens and candidates on Saturday evening in
Caribou, on Sunday morning in Bangor, and Sunday afternoon in Lewiston). Kindly
remember our catechumens (now called “the elect”): Steven Kent, Ryan Martin,
Christine Southwick, Cody Southwick, and Katerina Warner. In addition, Lara Houle,
Jonathan Vallee, and Michael Jordan are preparing for Confirmation and First
Communion. They appreciate your prayerful support as they look forward to
receiving the sacraments during the Easter season. (2) A year ago, the St. Joseph
Knights of Columbus rejuvenated a Squires Circle for boys aged 10-18 to encourage
their participation in parish and community activities. Old Orchard Beach K of C
member, Mike Melnick (Tel. 413-575-2928) & other members head up the boys’
group, of which there are already at least thirteen members. I heartily recommend
this option as another way to encourage the faith life of our youth. All adult leaders
are approved by the Diocese of Portland for safety related issues. (3) The Good
Shepherd Parish Cemeteries Committee is leading an effort to pave the road in Saint
Mary’s Cemetery that is home to the priests’ monument, including Father Brendan
Harnett’s grave. The parish coffers will contribute $4500 toward the $9000 total, and
we are hoping contributions from parishioners and friends can raise the balance. Thus
far, we have received $3,890 in donations but still have $610 to raise; can you help?
If you wish to contribute, a check may be made out to St. Mary Cemetery and placed in an envelope in the collection basket or mailed to Sandy Labelle, Cemetery Manager,
271 Main St., Saco, ME 04072. We hope this project will be completed by Memorial
Day 2015. (4) Scholarships for Basic Parenting Classes at Saint Andre Home in
Biddeford: Saint Andre Home recently received a grant from the United Way of
York County to offer a limited number of scholarships for their basic parenting
classes at the new Center for Parenting and Play, located at 11 Adams Street in
Biddeford. These classes offer new information about how understanding the stages
of brain development in babies and young children is key in knowing how to be an
effective parent. Parents learn practical techniques for keeping themselves calm and
strategies for parenting effectively when their child exhibits challenging behavior.
The result is a more peaceful home! For more information, please call the Center for
Parenting and Play at (207) 282-3351. (5) Thank You of the Week: To the parish-
ioners who collected and burned last year’s palms to produce ashes for Ash Wednes-
day. The ashes were used in all our church locations. Thank you!
JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne:
I went to a toyshop to look for a gift for my little grandson. I noticed a tiny girl
standing nearby with her mother; the clerk was showing the girl an elaborate doll.
“Now, this model walks, talks, cries, and drinks,” she explained.
“Oh, I have a little baby sister who does that,” the tot replied scornfully.
“I just want a doll.” -The Catholic Digest

Upcoming Youth Ministry Schedule
~ Mar. 8 – Edge & Life Night ***~ Mar. 15 – Edge & Life Night
Apr 17-19 (Fri-Sun): Maine Catholic Youth Convention "Take off the mask, put on Christ!" Many of us feel like we are wearing a mask, hiding who we really are, especially when it comes to our faith.
Through the activities, keynotes, workshops, and prayer at this year's
Convention, we will discover that we no longer need to hide who Christ
created us to be! This year's featured presenter and musician is Connor Flanagan, and Saturday night will feature a banquet dinner and masquerade
ball. The cost is $200, but the parish is once again planning to offer a
discounted rate of $50 to our youth, thanks to our planned fundraisers.
Involvement in the fundraisers/collections will be expected of participants.
FMI or to register (the event is for youth grades 9-12), please contact youth
minister Josh Houde: 282-4812x117 ; [email protected].
Students at Saint James School start each day with
a prayer; then they recite the Our Father or the Hail
Mary and end with the Pledge of Allegiance. Each
day different students lead the student body with
these prayers and the pledge. During Lent, these
prayers help students to understand more about this most im-
portant time of year. This is a time when I am most grateful to be
in a Catholic school and openly pray and celebrate my faith with a
community of believers.
Our last Open House is on March 26th, from 9 am
to 2 pm. Most of the individuals that have come for
our open houses have said that they were invited
and asked to come and look at the school.
Thank you for inviting and asking people you know
to come and look at the school. If there is anyone
else that you know that either hasn't yet made it in or has not yet
been asked, please invite them to our last open house on
Thursday, March 26th! Thank you!

Official Christmas Fair totals are in. The Good Shepherd Parish Christmas Fair

Denise and I have agreed to Chair the Christmas Fair for 2015 and we are,
once again, counting on your support. This year, we are looking to attract more
volunteers than ever. Though we have not yet met with our core committee, we
are encouraging everyone to come forward with their ideas and suggestions to
make this next fair bigger and better than ever. At our kick off meeting we will
be looking at how to build upon an already very successful recipe.
I am certain that we will be setting some lofty goals, setting a course for suc-
cess and mapping out a flawless strategy. If you would like to get involved,
give us a call. We want to make this everyone’s Christmas Fair. We would
like to hold our next meeting on Tuesday March 3rd at 6 pm at St. Joseph
