"Witness to Life" Pilgrimage to D.C

March for Life January 22, 2016

On January 21, 2016, young people from the Archdiocese of

Boston will depart to join hundreds of thousands of their

peers in Washington, DC, at the 43rd annual March for Life

on January 22nd, 2016. This powerful event began as a small

demonstra2on on anniversary of the historic Roe v. Wade

decision. Today, the March for Life is the largest pro-life

event in the world and is a great opportunity to witness to

the dignity of all human life, especially the most vulnerable in

our society - the unborn. We are happy to once again invite

you to join Cardinal Sean O’Malley and the Archdiocese of

Boston on this life changing pilgrimage to rise up and

witness to life in 2016! We have four dis2nct tracks to best

serve all those interested, including a middle school, high

school, young adult, and family track. Please visit

www.bostoncatholic.org/witnesstolife or contact us at

[email protected]; 617-746-5766 for more

informa2on.

We would like to extend an

invitation for children, ladies and

gentlemen to join in helping our

parish to pray in song. A lovely

group of singers can also produce

a beautiful choir solo from time to

time. If you would like to join this beautiful ministry please

see Joan Riley, our music director after Masses or call her at

978-356-5494 and email [email protected]

Mass Schedule Change—January 2016

There will be no Sunday 5:30 PM Masses for the month

of January, 2016.

The Sunday 5:30 PM Mass will resume on

Sunday, February 7, 2016. There are a few reasons why

the Masses have been canceled. I will be away on two of

the Sundays and we are not able to get any priest to

cover the 5:30 PM Masses. There is no problem with the

other Sunday Masses, just the 5:30 PM Masses. Also,

there are a few “holiday weekends” involved and very

few attend when that happens. But, the Sunday 5:30 PM

Mass will resume on February 7, 2016. On a general note, I will have to say that since the 5:30

PM Mass started in September, the attendance has not

been good, many times the lectors and ministers have

not shown up, no consistent ushers, etc. The only strong

point has been the Music ministry! The Sunday 5:30 PM

Mass may be a concern for the future.

January 17 – Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Mary’s last words in the Gospel are, “Do whatever he

tells you.” (btw, Cardinal O’Malley’s episcopal mo_o). Mary

says these words to us too – to you and me. What is He telling

us to do? Read today’s psalm: “Proclaim his marvelous deeds

to all the naVons.” Paul reminds us that each of us has been

given special gics. Do you recognize the special gics that the

Spirit has given to YOU?

Pray for the grace to use your gics to proclaim his

marvelous deeds - to family, neighbors, friends,

co-workers. Pray for those who will proclaim his

marvelous deeds at the March for Life this week in

Washington.

In the Wedding Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C)

Isaiah 62:1-5

Psalm 96:1-3, 7-10

1 Corinthians 12:4-11

John 2:1-12

Think of these first weeks a^er Christmas as a season of

"epiphanies." The Liturgy is showing us Who Jesus is and what

He has revealed about our rela2onship with God. Last week and the week before, the imagery was royal and filial

- Jesus is the newborn king of the Jews who makes us co-heirs

of Israel's promise, beloved children of God. Last week in the

Liturgy we went to a Bap2sm.

This week we're at a wedding. We're being shown another

dimension of our rela2onship with God. If we're sons and

daughters of God, it's because we've married into the family. Have you ever wondered why the Bible begins and ends with a

wedding - Adam and Eve's in the garden and the marriage

supper of the Lamb (compare Genesis 2:23-24 and Revela2on

19:9; 21:9; 22:17)?

Throughout the Bible, marriage is the symbol of the covenant

rela2onship God desires with His chosen people. He is the

Groom, humanity His beloved and sought-a^er bride. We see

this reflected beau2fully in today's First Reading. When Israel breaks the covenant she is compared to an

unfaithful spouse (see Jeremiah 2:20-36; 3:1-13). But God

promises to take her back, to "espouse" her to Him forever in

an everlas2ng covenant (see Hosea 2:18-22).

That's why in today's Gospel, Jesus performs His first public

"sign" at a wedding feast. Jesus is the divine Bridegroom

(see John 3:29), calling us to His royal wedding feast

(see Ma5hew 22:1-14).

By His New Covenant, He will become "one flesh" with all

humanity in the Church (see Ephesians 5:21-33). By our

Bap2sm, each of us has been betrothed to Christ as a bride to

a Husband (see 2 Corinthians 11:2).

The new wine that Jesus pours out at today's feast is the gi^ of

the Holy Spirit given to His bride and body, as today's Epistle

says. This is the "salva2on" announced to the "families of

na2ons" in today's Psalm.

Did you know that approximately 22,000 students attend 79 Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of Boston?

The Archdiocese of Boston is holding a special second collection during the weekend of January 16-17. The purpose of this collection is to help Catholic elementary schools in our Archdiocese assist more families with demonstrated financial need and to help grow enrollment. If your parish is associated with a school, your school will receive 50% of the funds collected at your parish. The remaining funds will be distributed to other schools in the Archdiocese of Boston.

In our Archdiocese:

96% of Catholic school students matriculate to college

Catholic elementary school students score well above average on national assessments

Studies show that Catholic school students are:

Academically more confident with greater proficiency in writing and public speaking

Attending Mass more frequently

More tolerant of diverse views
