IMMANUEL LUTHERAN CHURCH
WATERLOO, ILLINOIS
Second Sunday after Pentecost
Saturday, June 2, 2018 – 5:30 pm
Sunday, June 3, 2018 – 10:15 am
“Making more and stronger disciples of Jesus Christ
through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
1
Welcome to Immanuel!
Guest/Member Cards can be found in the card holder of the pew in front of you.
We invite you to fill out the card and place it in the offering plate when we receive
the offering. When you fill out these cards each week you make it possible for our
pastors to more easily follow up with and provide pastoral care for our guests and
members from week to week. If you have any questions, please let us know.
Holy Communion is distributed every Saturday evening, and at either the 7:45 am
or 10:15 am service on Sunday mornings. In this Supper of our Lord we receive the
true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the earthly forms of bread and
wine for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith. Since this
Holy Communion is also a sign of our common confession of the Christian faith, we
welcome to the Lord's Table those who are confirmed members of our Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask the pastor
before or after the service.
Immanuel’s Saturday evening service is a bit less formal than our Sunday
services. Therefore, you will notice there are no ushers, the offering plate is left in
the narthex (entrance) of the church rather than being passed during service, and we
have only two individuals distributing Holy Communion. On Saturday night we only
use the chalice (common cup) during Holy Communion. If for health or personal
reasons you cannot drink wine, you’re welcome to practice intinction. Intinction
involves dipping the edge of the host (bread) into the wine. In this way, the
communicant receives both elements. If you have any questions, please feel free to
ask the pastor before or after the service.
Worship at Immanuel is...
Multigenerational. We believe that it is a great blessing for family members to
worship together. Taking seriously Jesus' words, "Let the little children come to me
and so not forbid them" (Mark 10:14), we encourage children to worship with their
parents and grandparents and provide resources such as children's bulletins and
children's sermons.
Eclectic. Eclectic means, "selecting what seems best of various sources." We believe
that we should strive to use the best hymns and practices that the church has to offer.
Our worship may include hymns written 500 years ago as well as pieces written 5
months ago.
Trinitarian. We believe that the object of worship is the only true God—The
Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Christ Centered. We believe that at the heart of worship is the Good News that God
has rescued us from our sins through Jesus' death on the cross and rising to life
again.
The Saturday evening service begins on page 2. The Sunday service begins on page 7.

SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2018 5:30 PM
In preparation for worship we ask that you silence your cell phones and/or
paging devices. Thank you.
The time before service begins can be a good time to pray and prepare your
heart and mind for worship. You will find helpful prayers on the inside cover of
the hymnal located in the pew in front of you.
Preservice Music / Bells / Welcome Opening Hymn, LSB 803, “Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” (Please stand
on the last verse)
Invocation P In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; [18:20])
Opening Sentences (The Third Commandment)
P Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this
mean?
C We should fear and love God so that we do not despise
preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear
and learn it.
Confession and Absolution
P Beloved of God, let us confess together that we are by nature
sinful and unclean and that daily we have sinned against our
gracious God and deserve His punishment now and eternally.
We have sought our own ways and have not always kept the
Sabbath in ways that honor Him. We have transgressed His Law
in our thoughts, words, and deeds.
C Almighty God, we repent of our sins and seek Your mercy.
Be gracious to us, and for the sake of Jesus, grant us Your
forgiveness so that, as Your redeemed people, we find the joy
of absolution and with renewed hearts serve You in time and
in eternity.
P In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I
forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
3
Introit of the Day (Psalm 62:5–8; antiphon: v. 1)
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from Him comes my salvation.
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from Him.
He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress;
I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
My mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be forever. Amen.
For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from Him comes my salvation.
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you. (2 Timothy 4:22)
C And also with you!
P Let us pray…
C Eternal God, Your Son, Jesus Christ, is our true Sabbath
rest. Help us to keep each day holy by receiving His Word of
comfort, that we may find our rest in Him, who lives and
reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and
forever. Amen.

Old Testament Reading, Deuteronomy 5:12-15 12“‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded
you. 13Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14but the seventh day is a
Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son
or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your
donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that
your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15You shall
remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God
brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.
Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
After the reading:
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.
4
Epistle, 2 Corinthians 4:5-12 5For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves
as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6For God, who said, “Let light shine out of
darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory
of God in the face of Jesus Christ. 7But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to
show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8We are afflicted
in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9persecuted,
but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10always carrying in the body
the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that
the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12So death is at work
in us, but life in you.
After the reading:
L This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel, Mark 2:23-28 23One Sabbath [Jesus] was going through the grainfields, and as they made their
way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24And the Pharisees were
saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in
need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26how he entered the
house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the
Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to
those who were with him?” 27And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for
man, not man for the Sabbath. 28So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
After the reading:
P This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C Praise to you, O Christ.
Apostles' Creed
All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and
earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again
from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right
hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Post-Communion Collect P Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a
foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son’s
body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our
days of pilgrimage that, on the Day of His coming, we may,
together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the
Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end; through Jesus Christ,
Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Preservice Music [Saxophone Selection (Elden Niemeyer), “Amazing
Grace,” arr. by D. Whitman]
Bells / Welcome
Opening Hymn, LSB 912, “Christ Is Our Cornerstone”
1 Christ is our cornerstone,
On Him alone we build;
With His true saints alone
The courts of heav’n are filled.
8
On His great love
Our hopes we place
Of present grace
And joys above.
2 Here may we gain from heav’n
The grace which we implore,
And may that grace, once giv’n,
Be with us evermore
Until that day
When all the blest
To endless rest
Are called away.
3 Oh, then, with hymns of praise
These hallowed courts shall ring;
Our voices we will raise
The Three in One to sing
And thus proclaim
In joyful song,
Both loud and long,
That glorious name.

1 O day of rest and gladness,
O day of joy and light,
O balm of care and sadness,
12
Most beautiful, most bright;
This day the high and lowly,
Through ages joined to bless,
Sing, “Holy, holy, holy,”
The triune God confess.
2 This day at earth’s creation
The light first had its birth;
This day for our salvation
Christ rose from depths of earth;
This day our Lord victorious
The Spirit sent from heav’n,
And thus this day most glorious
A threefold light was giv’n.
3 This day, God’s people meeting,
His Holy Scripture hear;
His living presence greeting,
Through bread and wine made near.
We journey on, believing,
Renewed with heav’nly might,
From grace more grace receiving,
On this blest day of light.
4 That light our hope sustaining,
We walk the pilgrim way,
At length our rest attaining,
Our endless Sabbath day.
We sing to Thee our praises,
O Father, Spirit, Son;
The Church her voice upraises
To Thee, blest Three in One.

1 Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy,
Whose trust, ever childlike, no cares could destroy:
Be there at our waking, and give us, we pray,
Your bliss in our hearts, Lord, at the break of the day.
2 Lord of all eagerness, Lord of all faith,
Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe:
Be there at our labors, and give us, we pray,
Your strength in our hearts, Lord, at the noon of the day.
3 Lord of all kindliness, Lord of all grace,
Your hands swift to welcome, Your arms to embrace:
Be there at our homing, and give us, we pray,
Your love in our hearts, Lord, at the eve of the day.
15
4 Lord of all gentleness, Lord of all calm,
Whose voice is contentment, whose presence is balm:
Be there at our sleeping, and give us, we pray,
