Educational initiatives have always been an integral part of SSG programming. SSG is committed to providing the Charlottesville region access to art by connecting artists and their work with the local community. SSG offers over a dozen outreach programs, ranging from in-school art workshops to group art making activities through Family Art Day or the Public Art project. Each program is designed to deepen the public's enjoyment and understanding of exhibitions and to make the best of contemporary art more accessible to the community. COLLAGE WORKSHOP August 1, 2014Community Housing Partners (CHP) Greenstone Community Center on 5th/ProspectAndy Faith

Andy led a collage making workshop to make Sailor’s Valentines. The students each chose images from magazines and calendars to make a collage on the back of their cutout (tigers, sharks, dogs, cats, flowers, sea life, and wildlife), and colored them with pastel crayons. On the front of the cutouts, the students chose a picture they wanted to center on and collaged around it with seashells, beads, bottle caps, stones, glass, and glitter. They worked on their sailor valentine’s for over two hours. Students said they had fun, and one student pointed out, “I’m an artist, we’re all artists!”
